Wireless Speaker Reviews – The Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker sets the bar for Bluetooth speakers in the price range. It exceeds the sound quality offered by competing products and provides expensive features such as stereo matching and waterproofing. This is one of the best portable bluetooth speakers for the price.

Xiaomi is constantly kicking the ball with its audio products. From the affordable Redmi Buds S to the Mi Smart speaker with Google Assistant support, the quality goes against the price. How about a humble bluetooth speaker? In times when everything is connected, the Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker sounds like a rather boring release from the brand.

About this Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker review: I wrote this Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker review after spending a few days with it as my primary music listening source. Xiaomi India provided the device.

The Mi Portable Bluetooth speaker maintains the basic design and is similar to the popular rigid Bluetooth speakers of the brand Logitech Ultimate Ears. The woven mesh wraps around the speaker and is not particularly high quality. You can tell the speaker is built for the price, but the plastic-coated material should be easy enough to clean if you drop a drink on it. The speaker is IPX7 rated so it can be used by the pool.

The strap loop on the side is a nice addition that makes this inexpensive speaker functional. Xiaomi includes a pre-installed fabric hand loop, but there’s enough room at the attachment point to attach a carabiner instead if you prefer.

Review Of Huawei Sound Joy, Portable Wireless Speaker, Sound Quality Devialet

On the rubber band is the control panel. I’m not a big fan of rubberized boards as they tend to attract dust and dirt over time. However, they do make sealing easier, and I can see why here. All six buttons provide fairly good tactile feedback and are easy to press. The dimples on the speaker are all well and good, but the black-on-black markings can make it difficult to tell which button does what in low-light conditions.

I feel Xiaomi could have ditched the stereo adjustment button in favor of an equalizer. In its current form, a long press on the volume plus and activation buttons replaces the equalizer setting. The auxiliary input as well as the USB-C charging port are located along the bottom of the speaker.

Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker supports Bluetooth 5.0 and I had no problems with connection stability. I walked comfortably around the apartment with the phone on speaker. All I had to do to connect the speaker to a Bluetooth device was press the dedicated pairing button. After the initial pairing is set, the speaker is automatically connected to the last paired speaker. Meanwhile, a long press on the pairing button will clear the list of paired devices.

Xiaomi hasn’t released a list of supported codecs, but the speaker uses SBC by default on all devices. I’d love AAC support, but SBC tends to be the default on most available speakers, and it’s not a major issue for a budget Bluetooth speaker.

A neat party trick here is the ability to connect two speakers in a stereo configuration. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a second speaker on hand to test this feature. The speaker has a direct access button to pair it with a second device.

The Xiaomi Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker offers surprisingly pleasant sound quality considering its affordable price. The speaker is equipped with two 16W drivers located in the front.

While some alternatives have gone for 360-degree audio output, Xiaomi keeps it simple. There is a noticeable decrease in sound quality when the speaker is turned on its side. However, the speaker can be placed both horizontally and vertically, which opens up some flexibility in placement.

I wasn’t expecting a bass monster, but combined with Xiaomi’s bass boost EQ setting, the speaker handles hip-hop and R&B tracks quite well. The inclusion of some Travis Scott was nice, although the bass was a bit crackling at the highest volume.

On top of that, the tuning sounds fun as expected with an emphasis on bass and treble to make the music sound more alive. Despite the emphasis on the bass and treble, the vocals are not drowned out, and the speaker should be a fun addition to any party.

Speaking of volume levels, the speaker is surprisingly loud, which is very useful for listening to podcasts and audiobooks in my apartment.

The Xiaomi speaker includes a microphone suitable for using the voice assistant as well as for making calls. I found the experience helpful, but nothing to write home about.

Double-clicking the power button will activate the voice assistant on the phone, and then you can use the speaker to perform any function. Instead, I found myself reaching for my phone as it called the paused audio assistant, but the functionality is there if you want it.

Calls sounded acceptable as long as I was sitting next to the speaker. The speaker wasn’t quite able to pick up my voice from a distance, and I wouldn’t recommend picking up a speaker if making hands-free phone calls is a priority.

The Mi Portable Bluetooth speaker is equipped with a 2600 mAh battery and is rated for 13 hours of playback, although this figure will vary depending on the intensity of operation. In my time with the speaker, I never ran out of battery despite prolonged use at 50% volume. After almost seven hours of listening to music, the speaker still reported 60% charge and Xiaomi’s claims should be correct.

Xiaomi does not include a charger in the box, but I charged the speaker from 50% to full in less than an hour, and a full charge should take about two hours.

Paradigm Pw600 Wireless Speaker Review

The Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker sets the bar for Bluetooth speakers in the price range. Xiaomi’s speaker surpasses the competition in both sound quality and feature set.

Wireless Speaker Reviews

The Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker in India has almost no competition at affordable prices of Rs. 2,499 (~$35). The speaker not only delivers sound quality, but backs it up with features like IP rating, long battery life as well as stereo pairing. In Europe and the UK, the Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker retails for €39 and ~£35 respectively.

The Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker gets a strong recommendation, especially if your budget doesn’t allow for more expensive options. Unless you have very specific needs, like the ability to install a microSD card—a niche feature provided by several no-name alternatives—you shouldn’t even look at other options. This is the winner. When Sonos first unveiled the Move portable speaker a while back, we really didn’t expect the company to aim any less with their new Sonos Roam that came out earlier this year.

The Roam is a compact and portable speaker that, at least on paper, comes with a pretty impressive list of features. For starters, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity lets you play your favorite tunes from your phone while you’re out and about, and at home via Wi-Fi, it integrates seamlessly as part of your existing Sonos multi-room system, if you’ve got one. It’s pretty tough in construction and seems to be able to withstand some outdoor exposure, with an IP67 dust and water rating. Other features include wireless charging (via an optional base), support for Apple Airplay 2, and the Roam can even be used as a smart speaker with support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Wireless Speaker Reviews

As far as portable speakers go, Roam is clearly stacked in terms of features, making the asking price of SG$299 (when it first launched) reasonable.

Sonus Faber Omnia Wireless Speaker System Review

Historically, Sonos hasn’t been too adventurous when it comes to having their products come in a variety of colors, and Roam is no different. It is available in two safe colors: shadow black and moon white. As you can see, our review block was the first. It retains the familiar Sonos aesthetic of a wrap-around speaker cabinet with hundreds of tiny holes. At the same time, the Roam is shaped a bit like a triangular tube, which allows it to project sound forward and upward when lying horizontally. It is worth noting that despite the speaker grill that extends in all directions, the Roam does not really project sound in all directions.

Wireless Speaker Reviews

Roam isn’t much bigger (or heavier) than a small water bottle, and the closest thing that comes to mind in size is a 6-inch sandwich from Subway. Weighing in at 430g, it’s lightweight and can easily be thrown into a backpack or even strapped on a bike so you can listen to music while riding Park Connector Networks around Singapore.
