Many people find built-in smart assistant speakers useful for quick Google searches and hands-free control of your music, but they’re not always a portable solution. Google’s Home Max even requires speakers like Apple’s HomePod to be plugged into a wall and connected to Wi-Fi to work. Not to mention they are quite expensive. Fortunately, if you want something more affordable and portable, the JBL Connect 20 is available. Unlike the Google Home Max, you can connect to this speaker via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. But is it good?

The JBL Connect 20 isn’t a small speaker, but it can be thrown into a bag when needed.

One thing I’ve noticed about speakers made by JBL is that they all have similar construction materials, and the Link 20 is no exception. The speaker is about 21cm tall and is wrapped in the same fabric you’ll find on the JBL Charge 4, Flip 4 and Clip 3. IPX7 waterproofing isn’t something you usually hear when it comes to smart speakers. Whether you’re using it in the kitchen to pour a drink or in the backyard and dropping it by the pool, this diffuser can handle it without breaking a sweat. One thing worth mentioning is that the speaker is quite large, so it’s Bluetooth compatible: I’d find it more useful in a Wi-Fi-connected room, as you don’t have to move it around much. If you’re looking for a portable speaker, then you might be better off with something like the Flip 4 or Clip 3.

You’ll find smooth plastic caps on both ends of the speaker, though the bottom has added rubber for grip. At the top you’ll find playback controls along with Bluetooth and Google Assistant buttons. Then there are two more buttons on the speaker column. One is the sound toggle, which mutes the microphone if you don’t want to hear the smart word “OK Google,” and the other is the power button, which has five small LEDs that give you How Much Money? Battery life left. There is a small rubber cover at the bottom of the speaker that protects the micro USB charging port from water damage, so be careful to close this cover as it is the only weak point of the speaker.

On the back you will find the power button as well as the mute switch to mute the microphone.

As a smart speaker, the JBL Link 20 has a few things going for it over its Bluetooth-only counterparts like the Flip and Charge series. First, it should be able to distinguish your voice at different distances and in different settings. There are two remote microphones that can pick up your voice even when playing loud music. It might not sound like much, but it’s really impressive and useful. You don’t know how annoying a smart speaker is until you scream “OK, Google” at the top of your lungs and get no response.

Voice commands also work well outdoors, but I find you need to be closer to the speaker for it to register since there is so much going on outside. Another nice touch are the four LED lights mounted on the top plastic of the speaker, which light up at the sound of your voice, so you know exactly when the speaker is listening. They act as volume indicators when turning the volume up or down.

Like other JBL speakers in terms of quality, the JBL Connect 20 really stands out in terms of connectivity. As mentioned earlier, in addition to Bluetooth 4.2, it also connects to Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, it lacks any high-quality streaming decoder if you want to connect via Bluetooth, but the grateful Wi-Fi capability makes up for it. This means you can usually extend the 30 foot range to the range of your router. For me, this meant being able to listen to the speaker in the shower while visiting family on the weekend and then bring the speaker into the yard from the back for live music. The JBL Connect 20 has Chromecast built in, so if you’re using a streaming service that supports it, you can connect to your speakers and easily control your music if you don’t want to use the sound.

What sets the JBL Connect 20 apart from regular Bluetooth speakers is WiFi connectivity and full Google Assistant integration.

Connecting to Link 20 is easy. All you need is the Google Home app on your phone, available on iOS and Android. Open the app and select Add to start searching for speakers. “Following the on-screen instructions got me connected in a minute or two, and I don’t think it’s a tech-friendly problem if you’re going to give it something it’s supposed to do.” it’s a problem. Of course, you can sync this speaker with other compatible speakers using the Google Home app, and if you already have a Google Home or JBL Connect 300, then you can have a whole home system if you want.

The hardest part is customizing everything Google Assistant can do, and even I found the app overwhelming, confusing, and confusing at times. If you want to keep it simple, play music and check and sometimes ask the weather. As long as you don’t mind the Assistant reading your Google Calendar events out loud, you shouldn’t have any problems with them.

The JBL Connect 20 gives you 10 hours of continuous playback, but at a constant output of 75 dB, we get 8 hours and 45 minutes of playback. Not great considering the size of the speaker if you compare it to the 13.

The Charge 4 comes in during our testing, and it’s not far behind. However, a day at the beach is enough until you get home and plug it back in. Another problem I found is that it takes a surprisingly long time to open link 20 and actually use it. . There is a long pause between the power button lighting up and the sound saying it’s ready to connect. It was so bad that I took my watch off temporarily and on three different attempts, I averaged 29 seconds. It’s not a big deal for the speaker’s overall performance, but it’s annoying.

Review: Jbl Link Portable

In terms of sound quality, the speakers leave a little to be desired. I was expecting the same quality as the JBL Charge – not the most amazing speaker, but still good. In contrast, Link 20 is not very good. It’s not terrible, but the low end is well defined and the bass in the song

The JBL Connect 20’s frequency response lacks power in the low end, but makes up for it in the mids and highs.

While the speaker is easy to use, this is one of those times when upgrading to a bigger speaker saves it. While the Link 20 is an affordable smart speaker, if you care about sound, you’ll want the JBL Link 300, Google Home Max, or Apple Homepod.

Everything sounded sweet and lovely from the Bag Riders, the vocals getting louder behind the melody, which grew in popularity as the song progressed, never taking over the volume. It handled everything well, although again the sharp low end wasn’t to my liking.
