The waterproof Tribit XSound Go offers slightly louder audio output than other inexpensive Bluetooth speakers. It can make a difference outdoors and in noisy environments. But it doesn’t have to be used as a speakerphone.

Tribit Xsound Go Bluetooth Speaker Review

If you’re looking for an external Bluetooth speaker under $50, you may have a hard time choosing among the many options. The compact and waterproof Tribit XSound Go ($36.99) stands out for its dual drivers that deliver true stereo audio. Regardless, the drivers are combined with passive radiators to produce clean audio at loud levels. However, for less money, the $59.99 Sony SRS-XB12 is also waterproof and has more impressive overall audio performance and remains an Editors’ Choice Award winner.

At 6.9 x 2.3 x 2.2 inches (HDW), the 13.4-ounce XSound Go sits flat on the surface and features a front-facing grille, rather than a raised grille like many of its competitors do. Available in black or blue finish. Behind the grille, dual 40mm 8-watt drivers work in tandem with a passive radiator.

The back panel has a snap-shut compartment that protects the USB-C port and 3.5mm AUX input. Tribit ships with a USB-C-to-USB-A charging cable, but nothing for the auxiliary input. The bottom panel has four small rubber feet to rest the speaker and prevent it from moving due to vibration. You can also hang the speaker with straps attached to the back panel.

Since 1982, we’ve tested and reviewed thousands of products to improve purchasing decisions.

The top of the XSound Go has push button controls for power, play and volume, as well as buttons for pairing via Bluetooth. The play button handles speakerphone call management tasks and track navigation (double press for forward, triple for backward).

Its IPX7 rating means the XSound Go can be hung poolside or in the rain. It can also be submerged (up to 1 meter) without problems. Bluetooth signals don’t travel underwater, so you can’t use them as underwater speakers, but you don’t have to worry about getting the XSound Go wet or washing it under the tap.

It’s Time To Party With Tribit’s Xsound Mega Wireless Speaker

The speaker is Bluetooth 5.0 compatible, but only supports the SBC codec (doesn’t support AAC or AptX). Tribit estimates that the XSound Go’s battery will last around 24 hours. That’s impressive for a small speaker, but results will vary depending on the volume level you’re using.

The XSound Go has a rich, balanced sound signature with a bass boost that can compensate for deep bass that cannot be reproduced.

On tracks with heavy sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the XSound Go delivers decent bass response for a compact speaker when the track starts. But when the heavy bass kicks in at about 15 seconds, the digital signal processing (DSP) kicks in and fades out a bit. This behavior is expected for a speaker of this size and price, and the DSP does its job to prevent distortion.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with less deep bass in the mix, is a better representation of the XSound Go’s sound signature. There’s some healthy bass depth added to the drums on this track, but nothing that delivers real low-end heft. Drivers cannot do this. The drums are still perfectly circular. The speaker delivers Callahan’s baritone vocals with rich, low-mid presence and some added crispness in the high-mids. At maximum volume, there is no distortion.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop gets plenty of high-mid presence to keep its punchy attack in the mix. The crackle and hiss of the background vinyl also takes it a step further. As you can imagine, the sub-bass synth hit that punctuates the beat doesn’t have much depth. Instead, the drum loop is slightly amplified. The vocals on this track are clear and don’t come across as sibilance.

, with a nice balance of lows and highs, keeping the high register brass, strings and vocals a bright spot in the spotlight. The bass instrumentation gets just enough low-mid richness to avoid getting lost in the mix.

XSound Go’s microphone offers less intelligence. In my testing of the iPhone’s Voice Memos app, the background hiss captured by the microphone sometimes prevented me from hearing my recorded words. You can avoid this problem by holding the microphone closer to your mouth. But the XSound Go couldn’t deliver consistent clarity, even when speaking less than 15 inches away from the pinhole mic in a quiet room. It’s true, it’s a cheap speaker, but we’ve tested other speakers that do well in this regard, such as the Anker Soundcore Mini 3.

The Tribit XSound Go’s dual drivers and passive radiators combine to provide a striking presence for a small speaker useful for listening in outdoor environments. Unfortunately, that speakerphone sounds like a Dixie cup on a string. The speaker is fully waterproof, but not enough to separate it from the crowded sub-$50 category. The aforementioned $39.99 Anker Soundcore Mini 3 is a quality speakerphone and just as good as the XSound Go. I also like the $39.95 JBL Go 3. This one doesn’t have a speakerphone, but it’s very portable. For an extra $20 more, the Sony SRS-XB12 is your best bet if you’re looking for an affordable Bluetooth speaker for outdoor use.

The speaker is what we call a small to medium sized portable wireless speaker.
