The Sony SRS-XB43 is a well-built, portable speaker that you can use either horizontally or vertically. The lamp has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, which ensures that it is completely dustproof and can be submerged in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. Like most Sony speakers we’ve tested, it supports ClearAudio+, which is advertised to adjust the soundstage of the speaker to your listening needs. Unfortunately, even with extra bass and Sony’s ClearAudio+ feature, the XB43 has an uneven sound profile that tends to emphasize boomy bass. The sounds are uneven and narrow. However, it does include a graphic EQ in its Sony Music Center app, which you can use to tweak the sound to your liking.
The Sony XB43 is a beautiful speaker. It has a balanced midrange that makes vocals and lead instruments sound clear and blended. But its underfocused disc can sound dull or masked at higher frequencies. Also, it struggles to deliver heavy bass, even when the EXTRA HEAVY output is turned on. Fortunately, you have some ability to tweak the sound to your liking using the graphic EQ in the Sony Music App Center. Although it gets loud, the soundstage is narrow and there is some compression when you run it at maximum volume.

Sony XB43 is a medium for videos and movies. Even with its EXTRA HEAVY preset on, it strives to produce low bass, so you won’t find a high-pitched rumble in action-packed scenes. Her sound is narrow and directional, which doesn’t make for a very immersive listening experience. Fortunately, its lag with iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth is low, so your audio should sync with the images you’re watching. That said, some apps compensate for lag in other ways, and your experience may vary.
The Sony XB43 is well suited for podcasts. The balanced midrange can express the vocals clearly, although its treble extension in the lower frequency range sounds a bit muffled and obscured. You can adjust its sound profile using the EQ in the Sony Music App Center. Pretty big, but unfortunately there are some pressure artifacts when you play it at maximum volume.
