REVIEW – Portable speakers are generally limited to personal or small group listening. Those above that size are a much smaller group. I was recently sent an ILive Tailgate Speaker and put it to the test. Read on to see how it performs, and how it can fit into your life.

Wireless Tailgate Speaker

The iLive Wireless Tailgate speaker is a 14″ x 9″ x 6″ box with a durable outer shell and an integrated handle on top. Under the handle (and easily accessible) are all the controls and inputs. On the surface there is a 5.25″ woofer speaker with LED light effect behind the grill.

The iLive Tailgate is encased in a semi-flexible molded plastic case all around. There are no openings, save the speaker grill holes and input ports. When on, a multi-colored LED flashes randomly and a metallic cone reflects it to illuminate the entire speaker area. (It’s not bad in daylight, but if you’re trying to use it at a political rally or anywhere else where the integrity of the message is at stake, be aware. I can’t find a way to turn off the lights disco this. .) The grill is slotted matte metal with a silk screen logo in the middle.

When turned on, there is a clock-type LED panel that lights up between the volume knob and the microphone gain knob to display information such as the current input mode, FM frequency, etc. Below these two knobs and display, there are inputs from left to right for DC power in (microUSB), Source select button, Rewind, Play/Pause/BT pairing, Fast Forward, USB in ( which also charges), a MicroSD card slot, and a .25″ mic jack. The entire unit weighs 4 pounds, so it’s easy to move around during setup and use.

No extensive installation. Charge it, and turn it on. Pair or connect your source, and you’re off to the races.

The amount of sound the iLive produces is truly impressive for such a small box. You can go too loud without even getting a third of the way through the volume knob range. The sound is a bit shallow / lively, but carries well, as long as the speaker is not blocked. The FM radio will let you listen to a pre-game show while still tailgating or notify you during a power cut. A USB or micro SD card input will allow you to play from your own audio collection. Plugging in your portable devices will also share those sounds.

Perhaps the most interesting capability, however, is the microphone jack. Using a standard high impedance mic (like one plugged into a guitar amp), you can not only talk and sing through the device, but you can also sing to the radio! This opens up possibilities for use at pool parties, political rallies, company outings, or sporting events and children’s parties. Not having power connected directly means it’s easy to carry the microphone and speaker around, for example, leading a tour around a park with a group, or organizing activities at a Scout Camp.

(apologies to Ty Cobb) So many FM frequencies have been used in most cities that it is often difficult to lock into a station. And, indeed, trying to pick up stations while scanning with the arrows is a bit difficult. If you move the unit, or sometimes touch anything on the control panel, you will experience static interference. But if you move away, you’ll find you’re right on the station, and you’ll get great sound. I managed to lock in our local classical station, and let it play for a while. I was blown away by Hee-Young Lim’s beautiful and full-bodied cello reproduction of Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The other instruments are also clear, but the cello is very full and charming, even on FM radio. I forgot I was listening to the radio until the announcer came in after the piece.

I have a cheap hi-Z microphone. When I plugged it in, the output was very good and the tone was accurate. A bit of reverb has been added, but it still sounds accurate. I can’t get it more than 40% and stay in the room with it. Jack was more confused by my voice coming out of the box, than by my mouth whispering.

This is a great portable audio unit for many uses. Our local bike advocacy group can use it for announcements before and after group rides. (Or even during rides!) We have a local non-profit that maintains a trail in a park next to a beautiful natural river, and I can see having something like this to talk about during cleanups or holidays. Its portability, USB charging, and rugged outer shell recommend it for many places where a regular speaker would be lacking, and a PA system would be crowded.
