Wireless speakers are everywhere these days. Big, small, portable, expensive, cheap, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi … it can be a lot. But our top picks always have at least one speaker that’s right for you. However, before doing anything, you need to decide how you want to go wireless.

Bluetooth is the most common wireless music streaming standard, but it is not the only one. Bluetooth is a point-to-point wireless system: You pair a transmitter (phone or computer) with a receiver (speaker) to play music. It’s advanced and (mostly) easy to set up and allows you to stream music in great quality thanks to new technological advances.
Bluetooth doesn’t generally facilitate multi-room setups on its own, although you can tune multiple speakers into stereo with the help of an app. Others can create a wireless network between multiple speakers for multi-room audio. Wi-Fi audio includes standards such as Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast, along with Wi-Fi streaming systems from various manufacturers. You can also integrate it into your home network, so you can easily play audio from any device connected to Wi-Fi without having to connect anything.

The bottom line is that a Wi-Fi music system requires a Wi-Fi network; you can’t use it as a portable speaker with a smartphone like you can with a Bluetooth speaker (although many offer Bluetooth pairing as a backup). Different Wi-Fi standards also mean that various services may not be available for streaming to certain speakers, although this is less of a problem than before thanks to Chromecast and Sonos’ list of supported third-party services.
Most new speakers on the market have some sort of wireless support, whether it’s a bike clip-on speaker or a large soundbar. With few exceptions, any speaker you pick up at an electronics store can stream audio via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Your speaker may handle both wireless methods. Make sure your Wi-Fi speaker has Bluetooth mode so it can be used on the go.
If you want sound in your home, you need more than one speaker. Instead of mixing Bluetooth pairs with each one or carrying physical speakers from room to room, a multi-room audio system is the way to go. Fortunately, multi-room audio is more common and easier to use than ever. Multi-room audio is exactly that: playing audio in multiple rooms. That means the system can control multiple speakers simultaneously, playing from one or more audio sources to one or more speakers at once.

Apple’s AirPlay platform is an iOS and macOS-friendly multi-room audio solution. There are no first-party AirPlay speakers outside of the Apple HomePod and HomePod Mini, but many other Wi-Fi speakers, including Sonos products, support AirPlay. They allow you to easily stream from iPhone or iPad in better quality than Bluetooth, but if you are an Android user, you will not find much use in it.
Chromecast is Google’s answer to AirPlay and it works the same way. Google Home/Nest devices support Chromecast, as do many Wi-Fi speakers and sound bars. You can add Chromecast speakers to your Google Home setup and create room-based groups in the same app as your Google Assistant speakers and smart home devices (if you use Google Home).

The Amazon Echo speaker and voice assistant Alexa didn’t originally support multi-room audio, but now the latest Alexa speakers can be grouped and arranged like any other multi-room system. Like Chromecast, Echo’s multi-room audio setup is done through the same apps as voice assistants and smart home devices, only Alexa instead of Google.
Finally, some Bluetooth speakers support tethering, chains, and mesh networks that connect multiple speakers. This is usually not as complex or powerful as a Wi-Fi multi-room system, but it is a simple option that can provide an alternative to using your home network to stream music.
In addition to the type of wireless connection, you should think about the style of speaker you want. Smaller, battery-powered speakers (usually Bluetooth) are useful because you can take them anywhere, but they’re not too loud. Larger speakers generally provide fuller sound and better bass, but they can be more expensive and often not as portable.

In addition to single speakers, you can also find stereo pairs designed for desktop computers and home theater speaker systems like sound bars. Obviously, this speaker isn’t portable, but if you want a mid-range sound system for your living room or office, it’s definitely the best choice.
For a speaker to be portable, it needs to be small and light enough to carry around, as well as powered by a built-in battery. Of course, “small” and “light” are relative; Small speakers with carabiners allow you to attach them to your backpack and take them on hikes, while larger and heavier speakers can only be carried from room to room at home. Most Bluetooth speakers are portable, but this is by no means a rule.
Because Wi-Fi speakers rely on dedicated networks to enable multi-speaker, multi-room audio playback, they are rarely portable. After all, portability doesn’t matter if you need to connect to your home hotspot. But there are exceptions, and Wi-Fi speakers can still be portable if they have a battery and ideally can create an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network with your phone.

Not all portable speakers are made for outdoor or poolside use. Tough speakers can handle splashes, dips, drops and gunk and keep driving. If you try to use a speaker that is not rugged in this list, you will find a brick instead of an audio device. Look for a speaker with an IP rating and guaranteed water and shock resistance if you want to take it to the beach, lake, slopes or trail. Unless portability is at the top of the priority list, sound quality comes first. Many speakers do not offer many features, but they produce the best sound. Big bass isn’t for everyone, but unless your speakers are really small, they should be able to reproduce low frequencies without distortion at high volumes. Clarity is more important than pure power and balance, clean sound should be your goal when buying speakers. If you want a sound system that can drive the whole party instead of just filling a small room, keep the speaker size in mind;
