You’ll need at least one set of surround speakers to make your audio dreams come true (and that doesn’t even start with the Atmos setup) in the depth of the room. But there are challenges to overcome, especially getting sound through the wireless rear speakers.

While the Amphony wireless surround sound setup has served me faithfully for over 3 years, the Dynasty ProAudio is simply tops. A strong signal with no interruptions or dropouts and 2 frequency options in the 5GHz band make this a truly great wireless surround sound solution. Despite the power of 50 watts per channel, the sound quality and signal are also not suitable for similar models.
1: The first problem may be physical – meaning you can’t run the speaker cables to the back of the room without going through a door or hallway, entrance/exit to the room. Placing a carpet over the cable may not be enough.

2: The second problem may be that you are renting and you cannot make holes in the walls and run the cables through the ceiling. Even if you don’t rent or own your home, this level of commitment may be too much for most.
3: The third problem, and ultimately the most difficult to overcome, is the PAF – Partner Acceptance Factor (the politically correct term for the WAF – Wife Acceptance Factor). The thing is, the person you share your space with thinks the wires just look ugly, even if you can sneak them deep into the room as stealthily as possible.
This post focuses more on the three types of audio fans. The first is for those people who have an existing system and want to add surround sound speakers. The second is aimed at people specifically planning a new home theater. The third is people looking to buy a new system and are wondering if the wireless systems are compatible with True Audio (ie Bose, Amazon, Sonos).

At this point, it is important to note that there is no “perfect solution” to this. There are solutions that work, but some are hit and miss. If you get a shot, that’s great! If you don’t… you may have to return for a replacement to get a good one.
There are several wireless surround sound speaker systems available, but they all share the same basic technology. This means they either send audio signals via Bluetooth or use 2.4GHz wireless bandwidth from a transmitter connected to your amplifier to a receiver (or two) at the back of the room, which then feed rear surround systems.
Bluetooth is unreliable and we won’t cover any of them here as they just don’t seem to work at the time of writing.

This is a year update in which Dynasty ProAudio is a new standout in this space. It’s not the cheapest, but the performance is excellent.
I haven’t experienced any dropouts or dropouts in the months I’ve been using it, and the best part is that there are 2 frequencies available to use in the 5GHz band. This will save you from the crowded 2.4GHz spectrum that many others use.

The sound quality is significantly improved from the previous Amphony I used. It’s 24bit 48kHz (CD quality) and while it’s only 50W per channel, it’s plenty for most home theater surround sound.
It only has two units, so you only need to turn on one unit behind the sofa or in the back of the room.
It also has the ability to remotely power the subwoofer, but I wouldn’t try to power the rear speakers AND the subwoofer because it won’t push the right amount of power where it needs to go.

We bought a set of Amphony 1800 wireless speakers and it works. It’s powerful and cuts off our Apple TV Bluetooth remote signals, but other than that, it’s great. When we first bought it, the rear left unit was faulty. It popped and crackled even when the transmitter was in good view, but the rear right sounded great. We emailed and they quickly sent a replacement unit. The second unit went smoothly – a classic case of hit and miss with these types of units. However, it’s been working flawlessly for over a year now, and we’ve gone through more than one amp in that time.
It delivers up to 80W per channel and has a good range (not as good as they say it would be in a concrete room with nothing in the way and perfect line of sight). Our room is long and they work well. Most salons are shorter than ours.
Stylistically they look like they were made in the 80s, but we hide ours under the back sofa and no one sees them. Like the other units, it has a level control on the rear units. It can also be purchased as a single unit for a speaker or subwoofer.

This is the only rear unit that powers both speakers. It makes eating easier, but the reviews have never been great, so we didn’t choose this one. The price is good, but that doesn’t mean much if it’s not reliable.
It looks good. The speaker terminals look great, but unfortunately the reviews aren’t very good about it, which puts us off. What’s cool about this unit is that you can get a single speaker (eg for subwoofer) or dual speakers for surround back. You can also buy a 5GHz unit that will reduce interference to your regular 2.4GHz devices (if you’re not already on 5GHz).

This section will be short as space is limited. Either you can run the speakers through the wall, onto the roof and down the back…or…you can’t and must use the first list of wireless units or choose a speaker cable that passes the “stealth” test “. There are several companies that sell it, and the advantage is that it can often be used along the base and looks almost invisible.
Among the new but not-yet-mature and non-ubiquitous options for wireless home speakers, Bose dominates for the most part. They have an excellent wireless 5.1 system. There are new systems and some well-known brands that have released devices that deserve a mention as well. Bose certainly doesn’t own the market. As more and more systems come online, it’s hard to test them all, so we’ll focus on the “most established” brands. These wireless systems often cover the front of the room with a soundbar rather than 2 stereo speakers. It’s not HiFi for us, so if you’re a moderate audiophile, mainly for watching TV, then this soundbar will do just fine.
Sonos does great things. They do, but it looks like they tried to bundle some of their speakers together to complement the 5.1 offering. It’s still no match for a true 5.1 home theater system, and there’s no way you’ll get Aura, DTS:X, or Atmos on this, or any of those devices.

It might not be the best system out there, but if you’re on a budget, it’ll be enough to rock your world… wirelessly.
I wonder if Amazon will start playing in this space with its ability to have wirelessly connected echo units and echo subwoofers. It would be really cool to be able to connect your echo equipment or even a new echo studio (which has Dolby Atmos sound) to your HiFi.
