We love the convenience of portable Bluetooth speakers. But for those who want a durable—and high-quality—audio solution for the backyard or patio, we recommend a good pair of outdoor speakers. The OSD Audio AP650 speakers are your best choice because they sound great, are easy to store and are built to withstand harsh weather and repel bugs and dust.
Best Sonos Outdoor Speaker Set Ups
The AP650 speakers have a clear, full sound that works well for any type of music. And they don’t have any ports that let in water or bugs.
The OSD Audio AP650 speakers are the best value we’ve seen in an outdoor pair. Their clarity surpasses anything we’ve heard from other models that cost $200 a pair. And they have a full, powerful sound that can easily fill outdoor spaces up to 1,500 square feet. The AP650 speakers have enough bass for R&B, hip-hop and rock music. And they don’t need much power to deliver big sounds, so you can pair them with a small amplifier. Because they have a fully enclosed design, there is no risk of water, dust or bugs getting in. This pair is better built than most outdoor speakers under $200, with thick surrounds and thick, powder-coated cement housings.
The NS-AW294 speakers deliver full sound, but are not the best choice for locations experiencing harsh weather.
If you’re willing to spend a little more to get decent outdoor sound, the Yamaha NS-AW294 speakers are a good option – unless you live in a place where rainstorms are common, as their waterproof design can hold water. Gain access, which can cause harm. The NS-AW294’s speakers aren’t as clear as our top picks, but they have plenty of bass and can play loud.
Outdoor Waterproof Wireless Bluetooth Speaker
The Dayton Audio IO8XTB speaker is almost twice the price and size of our OSD and Yamaha picks, but we can safely say that this speaker offers at least twice the performance. Not only does it provide more bass, but its sound is clearer and smoother in the midrange and treble. Whether you’re listening to hip-hop, rock, folk or classical, you’ll appreciate the improvement.
The LU53PW is a compact, affordable option that’s fully covered, but this pair doesn’t have as much bass and doesn’t sound as good at very high volumes.
Those who just want to listen to light music in the backyard, and those who want to keep their investment low, will love the Dual Electronics LU53PW speakers. Although they don’t have a lot of bass and can sound very muffled when turned up loud, they sound great for background music, podcasts, and Internet radio. They’re also more compact than other non-powered models we recommend, and they’re fully sealed to keep water out.
The BTP525 speakers have Bluetooth and a stereo amp, which makes installation even easier. They look nice, but they’ll take up as much space as our other picks.
The Best Outdoor Bluetooth Speakers Of 2022
The OSD Audio BTP525 speakers are a good choice for someone who only needs sound for a small yard and someone who wants a speaker for very easy installation. Our other outdoor speaker selections are the traditional, non-amplified variety – they can fill a yard with plenty of loud sound, but they require complicated installation and wiring. With the BTP525, the amplifier is built in, and the power supply is waterproof. So all you have to do is mount the speakers, run wires between them and connect the power supply to the speakers and an external AC outlet. A built-in Bluetooth receiver lets you wirelessly stream audio from phones and tablets, and the sound quality is similar to the OSD Audio AP650 pair—though not as loud or full.
I can confidently say that I’ve reviewed more passive (ie, non-powered and non-Bluetooth) external speakers than any audio journalist in the world—a fact that says far less about me than it does as a whole. . The lack of attention these speakers receive from audio broadcasts. My outdoor speaker testing experience includes several single-product reviews and seven multi-product shoots: one for Home Theater Magazine, one for Home Entertainment Magazine, one for Sound & Vision, and four for Wirecutter. I specially made an audio converter to test the secret brand. And, perhaps most importantly, I have a yard—and I’m not afraid to use it.

These speakers are perfect for those lucky enough to have an outdoor space to call their own—whether it’s a small yard or a full yard—and those who like to listen to music or podcasts. The speakers are weather resistant, so in most cases you can ride them outdoors for years without worrying about them deteriorating due to water damage. (They cannot withstand extreme weather such as hurricanes, and some models will accept water under certain conditions.) These speakers have metal hinges and fairly tough plastic surrounds. So they will usually survive any impact from an errant volley, and bugs will find it difficult or impossible to nest inside them. And most of them are powered by a separate amplifier, so they don’t need to be plugged in or recharged – but you do need to run the wires to the speakers.

Outdoor speakers rarely sound as good as a set of bookshelf speakers designed for indoor use. The plastic mounts of the outdoor speakers vibrate and create a booming sound, and the perforated metal grills block or absorb some of the sound waves coming from the speaker drivers. I also suspect that because manufacturers know that their outdoor speakers are unlikely to pass the rigors of scrutiny, they put as much effort into this design as they do their indoor models.
Because you have to run speaker cables from the amplifier to the speakers, setting up a traditional pair of passive (non-amplified) external speakers requires more skill and effort than setting up a portable Bluetooth speaker on your patio table. If you have some unused amplifier channels, you can disconnect the existing home theater receiver speakers. Most stereo receivers have a “Speaker A/B” button that lets you switch the sound to other speakers, or you can use an inexpensive speaker switcher. You can also use an inexpensive mini stereo amplifier from brands like Fossey Audio or LoxG. Add a Bluetooth adapter (or buy an amp with built-in Bluetooth), and you can easily access digital music files, online audio services, and podcasts from a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, or computer (as long as you have a Bluetooth adapter—usually 15 to 30 feet maximum).
You will need to keep the amplifier indoors and run the wires through your walls or on the outside of the house. Obviously, this operation requires some skill and experience. Most areas allow low-voltage cables (ie, audio, video, and network) to run through walls without a permit, but you should check your local building codes to make sure. Be sure to use CL2- or CL3-rated cable, which is fire-rated for safety.
The alternative to this mess is to get a set of external speakers with built in amplifier and Bluetooth. With this option, all you have to do is run the cables between the two speakers and connect them to the power supply. You’ll need an external AC outlet nearby, and you’ll probably want to unplug the power supply when the speakers aren’t in use.

The outdoor speaker industry moves much more slowly than most of the audio industry – it’s common for models to be sold for several years. In fact, many of the speakers we tested years ago for this guide are still available. However, the growth of very price-competitive vendors such as Dayton Audio, OSD, and Monoprice has greatly increased the number of models.
I started the testing process by breaking in each speaker with music played at a moderate volume for 10 hours. Then I listened to them in my backyard over the course of a few days. If a speaker showed serious anomalies—such as a change in deep bass notes or a harsh sound that produced a booming sound—I removed it, knowing it had no chance of being a top pick.
