Wireless speakers are everywhere these days. Big, small, portable, expensive, cheap, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi … the amount of options seems confusing. But our top picks are sure to have at least one speaker that’s right for you. Before anything else, however, you need to decide how you want to go wireless.

Bluetooth is the most common standard for wireless music streaming, but it’s not the only one. Bluetooth is a point-to-point wireless system: You connect a transmitter (your phone or computer) to a receiver (your speaker) to play music. It’s simple and (usually) easy to install, and allows you to stream high-quality music thanks to recent technological advances.
In general, Bluetooth cannot facilitate a multi-room setup on its own, although you can configure some speakers in a stereo pair with the help of an application. Others can create a wireless network between multiple speakers for multiple audio streams. However, the result is not as high-fidelity or powerful as Wi-Fi multi-room audio.
Wi-Fi audio includes standards such as Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast, along with various manufacturers’ Wi-Fi streaming platforms. Wi-Fi can handle more bandwidth than Bluetooth, so it supports higher volume. It can also access your home network, so you can easily play audio from any device connected to your Wi-Fi without connecting anything.
Wireless Audio Solutions
The trade-off is that Wi-Fi music systems require a Wi-Fi network; you can’t use them as portable speakers with your phone like you can with Bluetooth speakers (although many offer Bluetooth pairing as a backup). Different Wi-Fi standards also mean that different services may not be able to be streamed to a particular speaker, although this is less of a problem than it used to be thanks to Chromecast’s long list of services and Sonos sponsored party. .
Most new speakers on the market have some kind of wireless support, whether they’re clip-on bike speakers or bigsoundbars. With some exceptions, any speaker you pick up at an electronics store can stream audio via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Your speaker may be able to handle both of these wireless modes. Check if your Wi-Fi speaker has a Bluetooth module that can be used on the go.
If you want sound throughout your home, you’ll need more than one speaker. Instead of dealing with Bluetooth with each one or moving speakers from room to room, a multi-room speaker system is the way to go. Fortunately, multi-chamber tape recorders are more common and easier to use than ever. Multi-channel audio is very similar in sound: it plays multi-room audio. This means that a system can handle multiple speakers simultaneously, playing from one or more sources to one or more speakers at the same time.
Finally: Top Class Sound Has Become Cheaper (and Wireless!)
Sonos and Ikea Symfonisk speakers (in partnership with Sonos) use the Sonos app to let you access any speaker or connect to your home network and play music from dozens of online sources. different, or local storage.
Apple’s AirPlay platform is the multi-room audio solution for iOS and macOS. There are no first-party AirPlay speakers besides the Apple HomePod and HomePod Mini, but many other Wi-Fi speakers, including Sonos products, support AirPlay. They let you stream easily from your iPhone or iPad with better quality than Bluetooth, but if you’re an Android user, you won’t find them useful.
Chromecast is Google’s answer to AirPlay and it works the same way. Google Home/Nest devices support Chromecast, as do many Wi-Fi speakers and speakers. You can integrate all Chromecast speakers into your Google Home setup and create room-based groups in the same app as Google Assistant speakers and smart home devices (if you use Google Home for that matter).

The Amazon Echo speaker and the Alexa voice assistant initially did not support multiple audio tracks, but now you can collect and organize the latest Alexa speakers like many other systems. Like Chromecast, multi-room Echo streaming is done through the same apps as your voice assistant and smart home devices, but Alexa instead of Google.
Finally, some Bluetooth speakers support networking, pairing, and pairing of multiple speakers. They’re usually not as complex or powerful as a multi-room Wi-Fi system, but they’re a simple option that can provide an alternative to using your home network to stream music.
In addition to the type of wireless connection, you need to think about what type of speaker you want. Smaller, battery-powered speakers (usually Bluetooth) are useful because you can take them anywhere, but they aren’t very loud. Larger speakers generally provide fuller sound and more bass, but they can be more expensive and often less portable.
Best 5.1 Home Theater Systems Of 2022
In addition to single speakers, you can also find stereo pairs designed for desktop computers and home audio systems such as speakers. These speakers are of course not completely removable, but if you need a central sound system for your living room or office, they may be the best.
In order for the speaker to be portable, it needs to be small and light enough to be easily carried, and also run on a built-in battery. Of course, “small” and “light” are related; Small speakers with carabiners allow you to slip them into your bag and take them on trips, while larger, heavier speakers can be carried from room to room in your home. Most Bluetooth speakers are portable but this is not the rule.
Since Wi-Fi speakers rely on a separate network to enable multiple, multi-room speakers, they are rarely portable. After all, the portable doesn’t matter if you need to connect to your home hotspot. But there are exceptions, and Wi-Fi speakers are still portable if they have a battery, and the best thing is that you can create an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network with your phone.

Not all portable speakers are designed to be taken outside, or used in the pool. The powerful speakers can handle splashes, dunks, drops, and gunk and keep going. If you try it on the non-rugged speakers on this list, you’ll see that they have a brick instead of an audio device. Look for speakers with IP ratings and water and shock protection guarantees if you want to take them to the beach, the lake, the hills, or the trail. Our guide to IP ratings explains what these numbers mean, so you can determine whether your speaker can withstand a dip in the pool, or whether it will survive a light rain shower.
If transmission isn’t at the top of your priority list, sound quality is the most important thing. Most speakers don’t offer many features, but they do produce good sound. Big bass isn’t for everyone, but if your speakers aren’t too small, they should be able to reproduce the frequency without meaning to at high volumes. Clarity is more important than power, and balanced, clean sound should be your goal when shopping for speakers. If you want speakers that can carry an entire party instead of just filling a small room, keep the speaker size in mind;
