Wireless speakers are everywhere these days. Big, small, portable, expensive, cheap, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi… the number of choices can seem overwhelming. But our top reads are sure to have at least one speaker that you like. First of all, however, you need to decide how you want to go wireless.
How To Choose Between Wired, Bluetooth, Or Wifi For Your Home Speaker Setup
Bluetooth is the most common wireless music streaming standard, but not the only one. Bluetooth is a point-to-point wireless system: a transmitter (your phone or computer) plays music with a receiver (your speaker). It’s completely and (mostly) easy to set up, and it allows you to stream high-quality music with the latest technological advances.
Bluetooth is usually not able to facilitate multi-channel playback, although you can configure multiple speakers in stereo pairs with the help of an app. Others can create a wireless network between multiple multi-room audio speakers. The output is not quite as high-fidelity or as powerful as Wi-Fi multi-room audio, however.
It includes Wi-Fi audio standards such as Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast, along with various manufacturers’ Wi-Fi streaming platforms. Wi-Fi can handle a larger bandwidth than Bluetooth, so it supports higher audio fidelity. It can also integrate into your home network, so you can easily listen from any device connected to your Wi-Fi without any pairing.

The trade-off is that Wi-Fi music systems require Wi-Fi networks; You can’t use them as a portable speaker with your smartphone like you can with Bluetooth speakers (although many offer Bluetooth pairing as a backup). Different Wi-Fi standards also mean that different services aren’t available to stream over any speaker, although this is less of a problem than before thanks to Chromecast and Sonos’ long list of third-party support.
The latest speakers on the market have some kind of wireless support, whether they’re clip-on bike speakers or loud speakers. With a few exceptions, any speaker you’ll pick up at the electronics store will be capable of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi audio. Your speaker can also handle wireless both ways. Check if your Wi-Fi speaker has the ability to use Bluetooth on the go.
If you want to sound at home, you need more than one speaker. For Bluetooth pairing tricks with each speaker or carrying the speaker from room to room, a multi-room sound system is the way to go. Fortunately, multi-location audio is more common and easier to use than ever. Multi-room audio is exactly what it sounds like: play audio in multiple rooms. The system means that multiple speakers can be managed simultaneously, from one or more sound sources to one or more speakers playing at a given time.

Sonos and Ikea Symfoniscus (made in collaboration with Sonos) speakers plug into the Sonos App to access any or all speakers connected to your home network and play music from dozens of different sources or local storage.
Apple AirPlay is an iOS- and macOS-friendly multi-location audio solution. There are no first-party AirPlay speakers besides the Apple HomePod and HomePod Mini, but many other Wi-Fi speakers, including Sonos products, support AirPlay. They can easily stream from an iPhone or iPad with better quality than Bluetooth, but if you’re an Android user, you won’t find much use in them.
Chromecast is Google’s answer to AirPlay and works similarly. Google Home/Nest devices support Chromecast, as do many Wi-Fi and sound speakers. You can plug Chromecast into any Google Home speaker and use the same app as your Google Assistant speakers and home devices (if you use Google Home).
How To Mix And Match Wireless Smart Speakers With Ease
Amazon’s Echo speakers and the Alexa voice assistant didn’t support multi-room audio for the first time, but now you can group and coordinate the latest Alexa speakers like any other multi-room system. Like Chromecast, multi-location Echo audio settings are done through the same app as your voice assistant and smart home devices, only it’s Alexa for Google.
Finally, some Bluetooth speakers support the combination, chain and network of multiple speakers. These are generally not as complex or robust as multi-room Wi-Fi systems, but are a simple option that can provide an alternative to using a home network to stream music.
In addition to the type of wireless connection, you need to think about what type of communication you want. Smaller, battery-powered speakers (usually Bluetooth) are useful because you can take them anywhere, but they don’t go particularly big. Full-range speakers usually provide a larger and richer sound, but they can be more expensive and are often not portable.

In addition to individual speakers, there are also monophonic pairs designed for desktop computers and home theater speaker systems. These speakers aren’t completely portable, of course, but if you want a solid centerpiece system for your room or office, they’re probably your best choice.
In order for the speaker to be portable, it must be small and light enough to be easily carried around and carried in a built-in battery. Of course ‘small’ and ‘light’ are relative; You can clip the smallest speakers with carabiners in your backpack and take them on hikes, while the much larger and heavier speakers can only be carried from room to room in your home. Most Bluetooth speakers are portable, but this is not the rule.
Since Wi-Fi speakers rely on a separate network to enable multi-speaker and multi-room audio playback, they are rarely portable. After all, portability doesn’t matter if you need to connect to your home hotspot. But there are exceptions, and Wi-Fi speakers can still be portable if they have batteries, and are ideal for creating a Wi-Fi network with your phone.

Not all portable speakers are built for carrying around outdoors or for pool use. Speaking of rough sprays, dunks, drops and gunk they can handle and run. If you try this with the non-dirty ones on this list, you’ll still find yourself in for a crappy listening device. Ask for speakers with IP ratings and warranties for water and shock resistance if you want to take them to the beach, lake, slopes or trails. Our guide to IP ratings explains what the numbers mean, so you can decide whether your speaker can handle being submerged in a tank, or whether it can survive light exposure.
Unless portability is at the top of the priority list, sound quality is paramount. Many speakers don’t offer many features, but they produce top-notch audio. Great bass isn’t for everyone, but if your speaker is quite small, it can accurately express low frequencies without distortion at high volumes. Clarity is more important than pure power, and clean sound should be a goal when shopping for a speaker. If you want sound reasoning, which can repel a whole party, just filling a small room, bear in mind the size of the speaker;
