There is no doubt in our minds that ELAC’s new Debut 2.0 system meets the needs of anyone looking for a good 5.1 setup. It’s the voice that does it for us. Audio quality is great for the size of the speakers, with punchy bass that lets you hear every kick, punch and blast. While it doesn’t have the defined quality of something like the expensive KEF T305, below, it also feels a little more natural and immersive. For most rooms this is all you need.

In that case, we recommend going for the Denon AVR-S750H, which not only includes all the great features found in its predecessor, the 740H, but also adds Dolby Atmos height virtualization and HDMI eARC functionality. Together, the speaker package and receiver reproduce beautifully, the amps providing enough grunt for the amazing F6.2 speakers to sit on the floor and do what they want. You could argue that the price could be a little lower, but that’s not an argument we can support – they really do represent good value. And if you want to spend less, you can go to the AVR-S740H, the predecessor of the receiver in question.
The Monoprice HT-35 is a complete upgrade from the previous 33309 system, which previously held this position on our list. One of our biggest complaints about the system was the poor visibility, so we were very happy to see that the HT-35 speakers solved that problem. They sound great, and despite the lack of sound we were after – the Onkyo HT-S3910 excels here – the HT-35 speakers still deserve a spot on this list.
The Monoprice HT-35 speaker set is authentic, which means you don’t have to spend a lot of money to beef it up. Despite not having Dolby or DTS:X, the Denon AVR-S540BT receiver delivers true audio sound. This model seems to bring out the best in the Monoprice speakers, and for under $400, it comes with an impressive array of features. We wish Denon would improve the design of their receivers – clearly a problem they share with the Monoprice – but boring designs seem to be the norm in the home theater industry.
It’s one of the more expensive pairs on this list, but if you’re looking for the perfect mix that delivers near-perfect 5.1 sound, then it’s a quick run. KEF has a serious presence in the home theater product cycle on the site, and for good reason: their speakers are pretty good. The 305 is their flagship 5.1 system and offers a combination of T301 and T101 satellites – which are louder than traditional satellite speakers – as well as the amazing T-2 sub.

We’ve already checked the name of this receiver, paired with the ELAC Debut 2.0 system in our top picks, and while we love it for it, the 750H’s forgiving nature means it’s perfectly compatible with most systems. It even offers additional speaker options if you decide to add full speakers later. If you have a small room, like many of us, but still want to hear the best sound, we highly recommend this combination.
If you want surround sound and gaming, you need a system that produces great audio at close range. The Logitech Z506 fits the bill. It delivers fun and exciting sound quality with an emphasis on bass, and it does so at an absolutely unbeatable price. It’s the most expensive package on this list, and while it’s not as promising as the Onkyo HT-S3910, it still manages to perform well. A major selling point is that the Logitech Z506 doesn’t require the receiver to be activated when used with your PC – just plug it into your tower or laptop. However, you will need a receiver if you use it with your TV. We don’t name another receiver here, but we recommend the wallet-friendly Pioneer VSX-532.

While the Logitech Z506 is attractive, we have to say the sound isn’t perfect. These speakers really struggle with the dialogue, which sounds confusing and unclear. This can be a deciding factor if you watch a lot of movies. If it’s sport you want, however, this is an affordable and effective way to get the job done. Logitech offers several packages, but we think the Z506 has the best value.
Sonos has been making big inroads into the home theater world, which means other companies have to worry. Without a doubt, they already own the wireless home theater world. This complete system, which includes a subwoofer, a Dolby Atmos-enabled Arc soundbar, and two satellite speakers, is probably the easiest home theater package to set up and use on this list. It’s an absolute dream, and while it doesn’t have the depth of something like ELAC Debut 2.0 5.1, it still sounds amazing.
The biggest downside to the Sonos 5.1 Surround Set is that it’s a closed ecosystem, meaning it doesn’t work with speakers.
