They’re pretty much everywhere, and like it or not, even guys like Ultimate Ears (EU), who normally live in the audio market, sometimes come out to play.
A few weeks ago, Logitech/Ultimate Ears asked me if I was interested in checking out their new Bluetooth speaker. While I don’t take a lot of Bluetooth speaker reviews because there’s so much to see, I was told that the new speakers have super long battery life, can be paired together for big, rich sound, and this thing was super small. Since some of these claims seem to defy physics, I’ve had many good experiences with Ultimate Ears headphones in the past, and if there’s any company that can live up to these claims, it’s probably Ultimate Ears. .
As such, today we are going to review the Logitech UE MINI BOOM Bluetooth Speaker. The first thing you’ll notice about the UE MINI BOOM is that these guys weren’t kidding when they said it was small. The unit itself measures 4.4 inches wide, 2.2 inches high, and 2.4 inches deep, and weighs just 297g (~0.65 pounds). That’s about the size of three iPhones stacked on top of each other.

The design of the UE MINI BOOM is very simple. There are no bells and whistles, no LED light display, and no elaborate setup to get started. It is simply a speaker unit enclosed in a rubber outer shell. There is an on/off switch to power the unit, a micro USB port to charge the unit, and a wizard to connect non-Bluetooth devices. Once you turn the unit on, there are only three buttons on the device to worry about: volume up, volume down, and Bluetooth sync. Considering the Bluetooth pairing button is only needed to pair new devices, there are really only two buttons to worry about.
The unit can be paired using a standard Bluetooth device connection method or using NFC. The integrated Bluetooth module allows up to two devices to be connected at the same time and up to eight devices can be stored in the memory.
The UE MINI BOOM is powered by two 1.5-inch drivers that are close together given the unit’s 4.4-inch width. On the low end, there’s a port on the back to help add more oomph, along with a 3″ x 1.5″ passive radiator, which should in theory help reduce port noise and motion interference.
The sound quality of the UE MINI BOOM is almost the same as what you would find in typical small speakers or things like portable radios. When the two drivers are so close together, there isn’t much room for sound separation and the audio lacks depth, making everything sound a bit flat and two-dimensional. For casual listening, phone calls, and podcasts, this isn’t a big deal, but it’s definitely not convenient for those looking for something to enjoy all of their music. Simply the laws of physics at work and Ultimate Ears, unfortunately, have yet to break those laws. That said, the UE MINI BOOM lives up to the “boom”.
