Last year we took the best Bluetooth speakers we could find and put them head-to-head in a big ‘big review’. All things considered, the best of the field was the Ultimate Ears (UE) Mini

Which sold for $99. Since then, we’ve reviewed several others, including the $149 JBL Charge and the $199 Bose Mini Soundlink , as excellent, more expensive alternatives.

A few weeks ago, Ultimate Ears dropped prices on the Mini Boombox at retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, and a new Mini Boom app appeared in the App Store. We reached out to Ultimate Ears on the matter and were (briefly) provided with demo units of the new UE Mini Boom launching this morning. How did they stack up against the competition and previous versions?

. The only noticeable external differences are the blue status light on the front, the top of the device, and the new color options. The new Mini Booms weigh the same as the old Mini Boombox and cost the same $99 at launch (the older models dropped to $80). Even the battery lasts about 10 hours.

1. The entire internal structure was changed to optimize the type of sound that the Ultimate Ears team wanted to provide.

2. Louder and sharper even at higher volumes. It’s a whole different class…just to mention Spinal Tap, they went to 11 and beyond. As you can see in the video – the 1/3 tone of the Boom is what the Box only hit 2/3 of the way through.

3. It has the same pairing options as the more expensive Ultimate Ears full-size Boom speaker (see video) for stereo sound and additional volume boost. The separation of Left/Right sounds is a big deal here.

4. Bluetooth range has now increased to 50 feet from 33 feet due to improved antenna design and performance. Interesting note: the second speaker can be even more so because it pairs with the first speaker, not the phone.

Ultimate Ears Ue Mini Boom Review — Gadgetmac

I found connection and pairing to be quite easy and smooth with all Booms and Boom Minis. The Android Boom app works exactly the same as the Mac version, despite only being released earlier this week (compared to the Apple version, which is over a week old).

As for the full size cylindrical boom? It’s probably the best portable Bluetooth speaker I’ve found next to the Bose Soundlink Mini, but it offers micro-USB charging, a useful app, a better shape, and simpler controls for the same $199 price.
