Ultimate Ears Hyperboom Bluetooth Speaker – If you love UE but felt their previous offerings weren’t strong enough to rock your parties, then the HYPERBOOM is perfect for you. Sure, it’s expensive, but it fills a niche that EU couldn’t fill before.
If you are going to the beach or the park, you can look for some well-known speakers, and one such successful company is Ultimate Ears (EU). This is the company behind the UE BOOM, Roll and WONDERBOOM series, all of which are ideal speakers for many. UE HYPERBOOM makes loud sound portable, or even better than before. It’s a giant EU speaker pushed to its limits, but does that make it good?

Ultimate Ears Finds Perfect Pitch With Hyperboom Speaker
The first thing you need to know is that this thing is big. If you’ve owned UE BOOM speakers before and think you know what it’s like to use a UE speaker, just throw that knowledge out the window. For the first time, UE had a square speaker instead of a cylinder, and it works. You still get the giant + and – signs the company is known for, but this time the symbols are capacitive touch. You won’t be able to throw the HYPERBOOM in your bag for a trip, but it’s still pretty light considering its size. Instead, this is the kind of speaker you want for a garden or beach party.
The speaker is made of durable plastic that is IPX4 splash and dust resistant. I can see this speaker living by the pool in the summer – not having to worry about rain or splashes is a huge plus. However, do not submerge the speaker in water as this will fry the internal parts. There is a built-in rubber strap along the spine, which I really like because it makes it much easier to carry the speaker from place to place. Also, when not in use, you can simply smooth it against the speaker, which is convenient. Under the strap you’ll find waterproof covers for all the connectors, one of which I’ll show you here because it really changed the way you look at this speaker.
In classic EU style, HYPERBOOM features giant touch-sensitive volume + and – controls.
Review: Ultimate Ears Hyperboom Bluetooth Speaker
UE included an optical input, which is a brilliant move. While this speaker will obviously be useful at summer parties, whether it’s at the beach or in the park, the optical input means it can be useful for people at home. Although I occasionally bring a speaker to a party, most of the time I just sit in my apartment and relax. The idea of being able to use this big, loud, and pretty rugged speaker in my everyday life, then pick it up and take it with me to my next family BBQ is very appealing. If you’re a home theater guy, this is obviously not for you. However, I can see it being useful for those who want to quickly upgrade their TV sound and kill two birds with one stone.
Another very cool feature of the UE HYPERBOOM is “One Touch Music Control”, which automatically plays your favorite playlist when you long press the play/pause button. This feature won’t change your life, but it looks very convenient and futuristic.
Although it has an optical input, this speaker is clearly designed for the next party. So much so that the EU has found a solution to the irregularity of the party. You know when someone connects via Bluetooth and plays music and then someone else has to connect their phone? You need to drop the assistant or re-pair another phone to the speaker, either way the music is missing. To overcome this, the EU is included

Bluetooth inputs. One person can actively DJ, while another person can pair up with the speaker and queue up their song without disrupting the flow of the party.
In addition to the two Bluetooth inputs, you also get an optical input, a USB-A output for charging devices and a 3.5mm input. Switching between all inputs is easy as there is a separate button for each of the four on the top of the speaker. One thing to note is that the 3.5mm and optical outputs are hidden under a rubber tab on the back of the speaker, so if you want to use them, be aware that you’ll be breaking the IPX4 seal. use them, so avoid water if possible.
The wireless range is about 48 meters and the connection works well. I have no problem listening to music in my apartment, even if there are a few walls in the way. Lag is also non-existent when streaming video via Bluetooth, which is surprising since we’re not talking high-quality codecs here.

You can fully control every aspect of the speaker from the BOOM app. You also get some extra features like EQ and the ability to connect multiple EU speakers via PartyUp.
EU claims the HYPERBOOM will provide approximately 24 hours of continuous playback at 50% volume and approximately three full hours of playback at 100% volume. During our test, we recorded 22 hours and 14 minutes of continuous playback. If you’ve ever owned an EU speaker, the HYPERBOOM battery life check process will be familiar to you. To check your battery life, all you have to do is touch the + and – icons at the same time.
The bass (pink) has a slight emphasis that can seem stronger than some mids and highs (green and blue).

When I spoke to the EU representatives about the speaker, they noted that its sound profile was very bassy from the start, but when the prototypes started arriving, the engineers decided that the bass was too loud and the they reduced When I tested the frequency response of this speaker, I placed it in the middle of a large room. Normally, if you buy this speaker and place it in the corner, the bass would be exaggerated as it bounced off the walls, but your experience should be somewhat similar to what I’ve tried anyway, thanks to a something UE calls Adaptive EQ. A small microphone on top of the speaker listens and adjusts the speaker’s EQ in real time.
As you can see from the frequency transfer graph, the bass gets a good boost, but the bass is muted (a common problem with portable speakers). That makes the bass line in the song ???? of EDEN booms the song in such a way that it remains easily audible even outdoors.
Vocals came through pretty well and the two 25mm tweeters handled the highs well. Hi-hats and cymbals were not very loud and clear. You can hear it on You Only Live Once by The Strokes, when the heart tremors seem distant and dull, but never grow harsh, which is a good thing. You might not get the level of clarity you’re used to from speakers, but there was no distortion even at high volumes, which you can’t say about any Bluetooth speaker designed for outdoor use. Of course, if you want to further adjust the sound of your music, you can always go to the app and adjust the EQ yourself.
Ultimate Ears Hyperboom Vs Jbl Boombox 3 Side By Side Speaker Comparison
The UE HYPERBOOM is a great speaker that fills that niche perfectly, but at $399. Whether or not you should buy it depends on whether or not you have a few hundred dollars to spare. While I don’t see too many people spending the money to buy this (especially when you can get several smaller speakers for this price), it’s a great speaker.
All prices are in USD unless otherwise stated. Prices may change over time and vary by region. Unfortunately, we are unable to display Amazon prices on the site as they vary greatly by currency.
Well It solves the most annoying party problems and its rugged IPX4 construction means you don’t have to mess around. Not to mention, it sounds great, and the Adaptive EQ is a smart solution to not knowing where you’ll place the speaker in the space. Plus, thanks to the optical input, you can use this speaker every day, even when you’re not gaming.
