Toshiba Bluetooth Headphones – Toshiba RZE-BT800E Review: True wireless bluetooth headphones on a budget The Toshiba RZE-BT800E is true wireless headphones at a great price, but is it worth buying even at that price?

Music quality is average. If you can live with a band on the back of your neck, there are far better wireless audio options

Ever since Apple released its AirPods, truly wireless headphones have become an object of desire for many. This is the price that caused the bubble in most cases. In recent years, the market has seen many true wireless phones but most of them are from unknown Chinese brands. Then, a reasonably priced pair from a well-known Japanese brand arrived at our office. While Toshiba’s other product line is more popular, we will see how it fares in favor of the personal audio space of the RZE-BT800E wireless headphones.

The headphones have a very simple design, and although they are not as compact as Apple AirPods, they are relatively small and do not stick out of the ear too much. It is made of plastic and has a glossy finish but the construction is sturdy and can handle a few drops. The use of plastic is understood here because the weight must be kept as low as possible. Having said that, each bud weighs 5.2 grams and has a 50 mAh battery inside. The company also has a bundled charging pod that can hold a 450 mAh charge. More on that later. Each pod has only one button that can perform several tasks.

The company also bundles three pairs of ear tips of different sizes. Use one that fits your ear – one that doesn’t feel uncomfortable and is large enough to provide reasonable isolation from the outside. The medium top is pre-installed and works best for me. I received the black version of the RZE-BT800E for review but strangely the extra ear tips are in the white packaging. Hopefully it won’t be a retail package.

In terms of comfort, if you haven’t used wireless headphones before, they may seem heavier than your usual in-wire headphones (and they are) but you’ll quickly get used to the extra weight. I used them for more than an hour and did not feel any ear fatigue. Although the ear canal was fine, there was a little discomfort around the ears and I had to adjust them a little every 20 minutes. So pretty comfortable but could be better if they were smaller maybe. When you put them in your ears, they fit and don’t accidentally come out. I tried a quick jog one afternoon in this horrible weather and they didn’t come out once.

Jog also has another purpose – to check if it’s really sweat-proof, and I’m happy to report that they are. The company claims that the RZE-BT800E is sweat and water resistant but there is no IP rating for further assurance. So I would recommend taking them to the gym or a jog but not the rain dance.

Each bud has a soft touch button that can be used to turn it on or off (long press), play a song/pause or answer/end a call (one click) and finally, press the last number (double click). . Unfortunately, there are no controls to go to the first or next track or even control the volume. So you have to go back to the phone to manage it. One strange problem here is that you can power the headphones by long pressing either bud to turn them off, but you have to turn each bud on individually. Worse, if you only change the right bud, it won’t pair with the phone until you change the left one. However, if you switch to the left bud first, it will pair with your phone perfectly regardless of whether you turn on the right bud or not. Speaking of Bluetooth pairing, it’s pretty easy. There is no problem.

Moving on to music playback, I would rate it average at best. These headphones are low on bass, and while the bass feels almost adequate when you are indoors with the volume up to 50 percent, the lack is felt when you step outside and increase the volume above 50 to 60 percent.

Well, these headphones are meant for outdoor use for the most part, so it’s better if the sound engineer errs on the side of higher bass than lower. The vocals are clear enough, but the lower mids are muted and the sound is a bit narrow. The highs are quite sharp but often overwhelm the upper mid-range frequencies, making the sound a bit too bright for my taste. I like it quite warm with a decent amount of bass. So if you listen to bass-driven music or like your thumb on the beat, this pairing experience won’t appeal to you.

The quality of the call was a completely different kettle of fish. The call quality is good and the person on the other end can also hear me loud and clear. I believe these headphones are designed specifically for that. Another interesting part is, the headphones read the phone number of the incoming phone but don’t try to read the name even if it is saved in your contacts. This is only useful if you remember the phone number.

Toshiba says the RZE-BT800E should last you around 4 hours on a full charge. It lasted about 3 and a quarter during my test, which isn’t great but par for the course for this category. It takes about 90 minutes to fully charge. The jumbo capsule-like charging dock comes packaged with its own 450 mAh battery. You should be able to charge these headphones four times in theory but in reality it’s about three before you need to find a charging point. The micro USB cable is supposed to be bundled in the retail package but was missing from my review unit.

Toshiba RZE-BT800E can be bought for Rs 5,999 with one year warranty. They often go a few hundred below in Amazon India.

If you’re looking for wireless headphones to play back great outdoor music, these aren’t for you. But if you’re in awe of true wireless headphones and looking for an affordable option from a well-known brand with good call quality and average music playback, then this isn’t a bad choice for you. However, if you can live with a band on the back of your neck, there are far too many better sounding wireless options than the usual suspects like Sony, JBL etc. and for a few thousand Rupees less will serve you better.
