It sounds warm and smooth, just like a console tube radio or phonograph. Honestly, I played Christmas music on it first and it sounded just like the radio/phonograph at my mom’s house with a 12″ speaker and a 10 watt vacuum tube amp that my dad built when he was a kid!
This speaker is all about clean, smooth and smooth sound. This is correct; nothing is reinforced to sell well in a store. If you want more bass, place it on a wall or in a corner, and for less bass, place it on a table away from any wall.

This TDK uses all the same tricks as the Bose: lots of active bass equalization, efficient Class D amplification, and small solid drivers and passive radiators in a solid, tight box. It also has a microphone that you can use as a speakerphone to take calls.
When I play from my iPhone 5, it plays for hours without skipping as long as I stay about 12 feet away. It’s much better than Apple’s AirPlay, which always fails for me. On my iPod, iPhone or iPad, everything is fine!
There is also a 3.5mm AUX input so you can play your TDK tapes or play 1/2″ masters from the Studer A80 with the appropriate adapters. TDK rates the maximum input to the 3.5mm jack as 2.5V RMS, meaning it’s perfect for use with any CD player or other portable device.

It runs for about 6 hours on its internal Ni-MH battery. It also runs and charges on AC power with the included 12V DC adapter. There’s a 1A USB socket for charging other devices, as long as you’re connected to charging power too. TDK says to only use their AC adapter, but I bet any standard 12V center positive AC adapter or car battery cord will work just fine too.
There is a slider to turn off the speaker completely and it charges regardless of the slider setting. The only reason to use the slider to turn it off is to prevent it from accidentally turning on.
Don’t worry about powering off: just walk away and it will turn itself off after about 20 minutes of inactivity. My only complaint is that it beeps if it loses your bluetooth signal. It has a hissy fit, like leaving the cassette door open on a 1990s Mercedes. If you have someone else in the room when you leave, you have to turn it off or it will drive them crazy. The sound is actually “Hey, let’s connect Bluetooth, dummy”, which is useful when you first set it up, but unacceptable later.

It is resistant to splashes. Everything is rubber. Don’t submerge it, but if it splashes by the pool, don’t worry.
It’s hard plastic, with a metal grill and sturdy rubber feet that won’t come off during play. If you touch it, you’ll feel this little speaker vibrate like crazy, pumping big bass out of a tiny box, just like Bose speakers at double or triple the price. Someone has to pay for the nice shops!

The volume setting is displayed with a 5-segment LED bar graph, but it’s more accurate than that because the top LED on the bar changes its brightness as you set levels intermittently. I think the volume is slow to adjust on the speaker, but it’s not a big deal since we usually adjust the volume from our Bluetooth device. The volume lights are behind the buttons, so they tend to get hidden when you adjust the volume. Ditto for the Bluetooth light; it’s on the button so you can’t tell if it blinks or not when you press the button.
It uses powerful magnets to get all this sound out of such a small box — keep it away from your tape recorders or CRTs. Measured at the outside of the speaker, I measure 5000 µT (50 Gauss) peak, 1300 µT (13 Gauss) typical. That’s about the same or more than a giant subwoofer like the 100-pound, 1-kilowatt, 15″ B&W ASW 850 subwoofer, and it’s because with the A33 we can get much closer to the magnets than we can with larger speakers. in larger boxes.
It easily fills a large room with great sound, but as you’d expect from this single speaker, it’s mono. To hear stereo, your head needs to be less than a foot in front, as with all of these Bluetooth speakers.

To connect, make sure the Bluetooth light is blinking, which happens the first time you turn it on. The next time you need to connect, it will remember your devices.
