Over the years, once-upstart Sonos has dominated the DIY multi-room wireless audio space. There is a lot of competition now.

The Bose SoundTouch 20 offers the convenience of Wi-Fi and Airplay compatibility; includes Pandora with additional services; high quality sound from a quality unit.

Key services like Spotify are missing; no in-flight playlists; no FLAC, WAV or OGG; no high resolution support; no device stop or pause button; the setting is intermittent.

The Bose SoundTouch 20 is a nice streaming speaker with good performance and great sound, but it needs to support more music services.

Bose Soundtouch 20 Series Iii Wireless (bluetooth/wi Fi) Speaker

Bose has launched a line of Wi-Fi speakers under the new SoundTouch brand, which the company says are easy to set up and operate, and are specifically aimed at Sonos’ audience.

Like Sonos, Bose offers a few stand-alone speakers, including the SoundTouch 30 ($699), a larger speaker designed for larger living spaces, and the smaller SoundTouch Portable ($399) and SoundTouch 20 ($399), which are aimed at slightly smaller spaces.

You can connect these speakers by renaming them according to the rooms they live in and, like Sonos, you can stream music in one room or play the same music on all of your speakers at once.

Emphasizing the full potential of wireless audio, Bose says that moving forward, all new speakers and music systems will be SoundTouch-compatible, giving you plenty of options for what types of speakers to add to your multi-room setup.

The $399 Bose SoundTouch 20 reviewed here competes with the Sonos Play:5 speaker, which is roughly the same size and costs the same. The Bose definitely sounds better than the Play:5, with a warm, focused sound that flatters most materials. It also does well in the style department – it’s a pretty sharp-looking speaker with a sleek, minimalist industrial design.

It has features Sonos doesn’t have, such as Apple AirPlay support, and Bose has built its user experience around the concept of six preset buttons for quick access to your favorite music.

That’s good, but Bose still needs to work on making setup even easier, improving mobile apps, and integrating popular music services like Spotify, Rdio, Beats, and more.

Sonos is well ahead in these areas, but we expect Bose to close the gap and improve the SoundTouch system with continuous software updates in 2014 and beyond. But of course, Sonos isn’t standing still — it’s also working on improving its already great system, and will no doubt release new speaker options.

The SoundTouch 20 is a relatively compact speaker, measuring 7.4 inches tall, 12.4 inches wide, and 4.1 inches deep. In typical Bose style, the speaker’s design is fairly minimalistic, though it does have a few more buttons than Bose’s popular SoundLink Bluetooth speakers (no, this speaker doesn’t have Bluetooth).

The top of the device houses the aforementioned six preset buttons, as well as volume up/down, auxiliary input and power buttons. The five-line OLED display in the center of the console shows the figures. It’s worth noting that the six preset themes are very similar to the scheme of the now discontinued UE Smart Radio. However, unlike Smart Radio (and by extension Squeezebox), Bose doesn’t support in-flight playlists.

The fact that the unit doesn’t have a power off or play/pause button is a little frustrating, but you do get a remote – and most systems of this type don’t have one – and it has the same functions as the unit, plus playback controls. Still missing the mute button though.

Soundtouch 20 Wireless Speaker

The SoundTouch 20 has many of the same features as the Sonos system, but one difference is that it’s designed to work with your existing Wi-Fi network and doesn’t require a special “bridge” like the Sonos. This Sonos bridge, which plugs into your router’s Ethernet port, creates a separate “mesh” wireless network that’s used to stream audio and help eliminate problems with Wi-Fi that isn’t incredibly reliable.

The SoundTouch 20 also comes with a “wired” Ethernet connection for those who prefer it, but Bose touts the simplicity of the system and how easy it is to set up “using your existing home Wi-Fi network,” nothing else.

We found the setup relatively easy, if a little awkward. With mesh network systems like Sonos and Samsung Shape, you set up a single device (or bridge) with a wired Ethernet connection (the bridge connects to your router) and the system automatically detects additional speakers that are easy to connect.

With Bose, you have to connect each device to your computer via USB and then place the speaker where you want it. We had a bit of a problem with the corporate firewall (none of the other wireless systems we’ve built have had this problem), but you shouldn’t have that problem at home.

One thing that would help is if everything could be set up via a mobile device instead of a computer. Bose is working to offer setup through its iOS and Android apps (a service offered by Sonos), but currently
