Anker Soundcore 3 Review

Anker’s Soundcore Mini 3 is a waterproof Bluetooth speaker that offers a great value for just $39.99. For example, you can customize its EQ using the Soundcore app, something that many other options in the sub-$50 external speaker category cannot claim. Whether you really need EQ for a speaker this size is debatable, but even without it, the Soundcore mini 3 delivers solid audio performance for its size and price, and great speakerphone quality. That said, the $59.99 Sony SRS-XB12 remains our Editors’ Choice winner for its slightly stronger overall performance.

Measuring 3.3 x 2.8 inches (HD) and weighing 8 ounces, the Soundcore Mini 3 cylinder has an eggshell-like exterior and is only available in black. The top 6-watt driver is assisted by a low-firing radiator, which adds deep bass to the sound signature. The base of the speaker is made of rubber to prevent it from dancing on a flat surface and it appears to be absorbent-like in some areas; This property can create vibrations that affect the sonics a little, however. A built-in strap allows you to hang the speaker to avoid that potential problem.

Surrounding the outer panel and just above the base are power, volume, and Bluetooth pairing buttons, as well as multi-function controls that handle playback, track navigation, call management, and voice assistant depending on how many clicks you make. Also along the base is a covered USB-C port for charging; Anker includes a USB-C-to-USB-A charging cable in the box.

The Soundcore Mini 3’s IPX7 rating means it’s completely waterproof, so you can expose it to splashes, rinse it under a tap, and submerge it in up to a meter of water. Bluetooth signals don’t work underwater, but the Soundcore Mini 3 is a good choice for outdoor environments and can withstand wet weather or splashes in the pool.

Anker estimates that the Soundcore Mini 3’s battery life will last around 15 hours, but your results will vary based on your volume level.

The Anker Soundcore app for Android and iOS lets you update the speaker’s firmware and adjust the nine adjustable EQ bands (or choose from the preset options). You could argue that this feature is too much for a single driver, 6-watt speaker and you won’t be able to see much of a difference most of the time, but as I discuss in the next section, the adjustable EQ can. useful in some cases.

The app also has a Bass Up option, which I left off to test because the setting is automatic. From the app, you can control playback and volume, as well as adjust automatic power settings and sound effects. In Partycast mode, the Soundcore Mini 3 can communicate with other Anker speakers.

The Mini 3’s nine-band EQ is more effective at adjusting the high frequencies than the low frequencies that the speaker can’t handle, which isn’t surprising. I tested the Soundcore Mini 3 with the EQ set to the Soundcore Signature setting, which is standard.

On songs with heavy sub-bass content, like Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the Soundcore Mini 3 tries to deliver strong lows—but both the lows at the beginning of the song and the low kicks kick in around 15 seconds. slightly out of reach of the driver. The good news is that the speakers are not distorted. But especially when the bass really kicks in, there’s digital signal processing (DSP) that slows things down significantly to reduce distortion.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a song with very little bass in the mix, best showcases the sound of the Soundcore Mini 3. The drums get a bass boost; I wasn’t expecting the depth of the bass from these drivers, but you get a little sense of the extra body. Callahan’s baritone vocals, too, gain strength—high-mid dullness supports mid-range richness. The drivers do a great job of delivering clear mono audio with more bass response than you might expect. It’s not a loud speaker, but it can be loud for its size. As with most small speakers, the closer you get, the better.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Ain’t No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum gets more mid-range presence, allowing the attack to pack its punch. The speakers deliver sub-bass synth hits that pound the beat with incredible body, but not to a degree that approaches true bass depth. You can hear the raspy highs and some mids, but none of the lows. That said, the passive radiator provides a sense of thunder and lends itself to a drum loop. The Mini 3 renders the lyrics clean and clear, without distortion.

, the Mini 3 produces a bright, clear sound with added depth in the lows – again, it’s something you hear more than you hear because of the active radiator that transmits vibrations to the surfaces.

The speaker microphone provides solid clarity. I tested it with the Voice Memos app on the iPhone and was able to understand all the words I wrote. The speaker can maintain a strong Bluetooth signal and keep audio devices small, so with sufficient cell signal, callers will have no problem understanding you.

The Anker Soundcore Mini 3 delivers full sound for its size, though its companion app and user-adjustable EQ is what sets it apart from most others in this price range. It’s funny when you consider how small the speaker is, but if you’re in a situation where more treble will help with clarity, the EQ is useful. The Soundcore Mini 3 has a lot of competition for its price, but that includes the sub-$40 JBL Go 3 and the Tribit XSound Go, both of which offer their own advantages. And for less money, our Editors’ Choice for affordable Bluetooth speakers remains the $59.99 Sony SRS-XB12.

It fits comfortably in one hand and turns into a pocket, again thanks to the hook on the back that makes it versatile. The entire exterior structure, however, appears to be made of metal, while the rubber surface is durable. Precisely in the end, therefore, the brand has decided to include everything
