Charging brand Anker’s Soundcore Liberty Air 2 Pro looks to offer better sound, longer battery life and noise cancellation at nearly half the price of Apple’s AirPods Pro — and it hits the mark.

The new true wireless headphones cost £130, undercutting big rivals from Apple, Samsung, Sony, Jabra and Bose, with a design that doesn’t reinvent the wheel: waste, small size and silicon base.

They’re nice and blue and not like the AirPods rip-offs. Weighing in at 5.2g each, they’re not bulky and have a lightweight yet firm fit that’s comfortable for long listening sessions, avoiding unnecessary stress on the delicate parts of your ear.
They are magnetically charged in a sturdy felt box with a sliding lid. The best holsters are about twice the size of the competition, which are still reliable but not as easy to carry.

The Air 2 Pro are standard Bluetooth 5 headphones and support the SBC and AAC audio standards used by most devices. Each earbud can be used on its own, but they don’t support swapping, meaning you have to manually separate them from one device to connect to another.

The backup is also manual, but you only need to do it once per device. Open the case, press and hold the button to put them in pairing mode and enter your phone’s Bluetooth settings the old fashioned way.
The iPhone 12 Pro and Galaxy S21 Ultra are compatible, but I couldn’t test them in a sealed location due to UK Covid-19 restrictions.
The headset has touch controls with double tap and hold options to pause/play, skip a track, activate the phone’s voice assistant, adjust the volume or change the mute mode.
They work well, but with two types of touch, the controls are limited compared to competitors with three options, scrolling or buttons.

Call quality was decent, with callers saying I sounded distant with a low but clear voice. The headphones emit some background noise even compared to the best competitors.
Six hours of noise-cancelling playtime between charges. The case can fully charge them 2.5 times for a total playtime of 21 hours.
It takes two hours to fully charge the case via USB-C, but 15 minutes can add three hours of playback time to the headphones. The case can be fixed within three hours. Photo: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
Anker believes the batteries in the headphones and case will last at least 500 cycles while maintaining at least 80% of their original capacity, but they are not replaceable.

Earbuds can be repaired through Anker Customer Service or an authorized repair center. The company regularly uses commercial and innovative tools, but does not publish results or sustainability reports.

The Air 2 Pro sounds great for the money and features. They produce a smooth, full sound with very deep bass. You should like a bass-heavy sound, but the lows are well controlled, with warm mids and highs with clarity. Those looking for a more balanced sound should look elsewhere.
They sound great with most types of music, but excel with dance and electronic music, full of energy and deep bass. There’s a full equalizer in the Soundcore software, as well as a set of sound presets, including a standard “signature” sound and a standard “bass boost” if you want more bass.

In addition to good sound, the headphones also have good noise cancellation. The headphones have different wear sides, inside and outside, each targeting different noise frequencies, such as low volume or speech. It has the normal function with the slider to adjust the noise cancellation, but there is no label on it to help you understand what each position of the slider means, making for a trial and error process.
However, the noise cancellation is better than I expected. They compare to the quality of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro, but fall short of the best, such as Jabra’s Elite 85t and AirPods Pro, which are incredible for the price.
There are two types of ambient detection, one for full clarity and the other intended to allow only sounds. The overall transparency is decent, but the natural sound is quiet and small compared to the quality. The sound quality is very good, allowing me to have a full conversation with other people while still maintaining noise cancellation.
Note the sound effect due to the noise canceling function, it sounds more controlled and sonorous, but with a slightly shallow pan. I loved the sound and the energy.

In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro have an RRP of £219, the Galaxy Buds Live have an RRP of £179, the Jabra Elite 85t are £219.99, the Bose QC headphones are £249.95, the Sony WF-1000XM3 are £169 and the Apple AirPods Pro it costs £249.
The Soundcore Liberty Air 2 Pro offers many features that make it one of the best true wireless headphones, but at a price.
Less than half the price of Apple’s AirPods Pro, the Air 2 Pro is comfortable, has good battery and connectivity, looks good, and works well. They are better than you would expect for the money and have excellent sound reproduction.
The case is larger than the best, the sound is heavier and the tap power is limited. They lack the flexibility and other features common to top-dollar headphones, most of which can be seen for £130 or less.

The battery in the headphones or case cannot be changed, but it will eventually spoil them and lose a star.
Pros: Solid noise cancellation, great sound, good value, solid build, decent fit, lots of built-in tips, good app, Bluetooth 5, can be used on its own, AAC support. Cons: It is not possible to connect two versions at the same time, it does not have a high volume level, it is better splashproof, disposable.
