Despite the imitations, anyone who makes a lot of hands-free calls should get the Liberty Air 2. The charging case is easy to use, and feels as good as it looks. We’ve all heard of the sophomore slump—well, all of us except the anchors. The Anker Soundcore Liberty Air 2 exceeded our expectations for how affordable wireless earbuds should perform, making them one of my personal favorites. The Qi-compatible charging case feels premium and call quality is excellent. We spent two weeks with the Soundcore Liberty Air 2, trying to share with you its strengths and weaknesses.

Editor’s Note: This Anchor Soundcore Liberty Air 2 review was updated on July 14, 2022 to add a new chart and update the score accordingly. We also changed the format to match our new style and included information on how to EQ the sound.

For an affordable price, these earbuds are very well built. Yes, it’s an all-plastic build from the earbuds to the case, but it looks and feels great.

The hair is almost flawless. The soft-touch matte finish tricked me into thinking it was a more expensive headset, and it was a pleasure to use. It’s easy to flip the lid open or closed with just one hand, and the earbuds fit neatly into their respective cutouts. A strong flick of the wrist will also open it, so be patient: the case will open if it falls to the ground. The bottom of the case houses a USB-C input and a manual Bluetooth pairing button, while the front has three LEDs to clearly communicate remaining battery status.

The earbuds follow the same stemmed design as before, but it’s far from a carbon copy. Thankfully, Soundcore toned down the glossy finish of the last model, which attracted a lot of fingerprints. The second iteration is more mature and doesn’t try to draw attention with a shiny veneer. The stem is easy to grip and the circular section printed with the Soundcore logo acts as a multifunction touch panel on each earbud. One disadvantage of stems is that the earbuds scrape against them and make unpleasant noises, but this is more or less the case with all stemmed earbuds.

The Anker Soundcore Liberty Air 2 had auto-pause functionality, but it looks like Anker has quietly removed the feature. However, you can still double-tap the right earbud to pause and resume playback. The angled nozzles keep things comfortable, and I listened to the earbuds for four straight hours without any fatigue or irritation.

There are a few useful features for those looking to download the Soundcore app, the most obvious of which is access to firmware updates. You can also take a basic hearing test with the HearID feature, which creates a sound profile based on your hearing ability. This takes a few minutes to complete, but is simply a matter of holding down the virtual button when you hear the tone and releasing it when the tone is no longer heard. You can toggle this profile and retest yourself at any time.

Additionally, you can remap controls, check battery levels, choose from EQ presets, and more. When you remap controls, custom functions are not enabled during mono listening. This means that the volume controls are not usable in mono mode, as they are custom commands rather than defaults.

A drawback of the Soundcore app is its limited functionality on some headsets. While this won’t affect Anker Soundcore Liberty Air 2 users, it means anyone with an Anker Soundcore Life P2 won’t benefit from downloading the app. According to Soundcore, more headsets will be supported in the future but nothing specific has been offered yet.

These earbuds use Bluetooth 5.0, which optimizes connection stability and power consumption. Connection stability is flawless indoors and outdoors as long as I stay within the designated 10-meter wireless range.

Liberty Air 2 supports SBC, aptX and AAC for high-quality streaming, regardless of your preferred operating system. Another advantage: low latency; Audio-visual lag is almost invisible when using the Liberty Air 2, which is great for people streaming video from bed or the treadmill.

To my dismay, Bluetooth multipoint is not supported and switching between devices can be a pain. Even though my laptop is off while the earbuds are connected, they won’t let me connect to my smartphone without opening my laptop again and disconnecting from it. Another way is to open the charging case and hold the button until the LED lights go out and then connect them to the new device. That’s my only major complaint about the Anker Soundcore Liberty Air 2, but it could be

Some users have reported initial pairing issues, which are addressed in Anker’s user manual. Not all devices are compatible with Qualcomm True Wireless Primary-Secondary Dual Pairing names, so when you try to pair with another earbud, you might get a “Connection Failed” notification — that’s okay. The primary earbud will still relay information to the secondary earbud.

If you experience frequent connection issues, you may have a faulty unit or the device needs to be hard reset. This can be done by inserting both earbuds into the case and holding down the case button for 10 seconds until the earbud LED flashes red three times.

The battery exceeded our expectations and lasted 7 hours, 5 minutes on a single charge, which is a huge improvement over the original Soundcore Liberty Air earbuds.

The Qi-compatible wireless charging case supports fast charging: a 10-minute quick charge in the case gives listeners two hours of listening time. The Sade case offers an additional three charge cycles before you plug in the included USB-C cable for two hours. That means you’re getting a day’s worth of listening from the whole package – pretty solid.

The chart above indicates that passive isolation is better with the Liberty Air 2. Frequencies between 400-600Hz are half as loud without the buds, and the buds effectively silence high-frequency noise as well.

It’s fine for travelers who don’t want to pay a premium for noise-canceling wireless earbuds. To achieve this kind of isolation performance, you need to take the time to find the best fit for you; Anker Soundcore offers listeners five pairs of ear tips (XS-XL), so you should be able to make a good impression.

A little bit of the customer curve. You’ll notice that frequencies below 100Hz (sub-bass) are very quiet through this headset, and the treble boost between 2.5-10kHz can make other parts of the music sound too loud and boring to listen to. Thankfully, you can always enter the Soundcore app or choose any to equalize the sound
