The angular shape is not sharp due to the rounded corners, and the build is solid and reliable. The speaker grille is made of metal, and high-quality plastic is used. The only objection is that the touch buttons at the top are prone to fingerprints. Despite the slightly angular shape, Sony has done a very good job with the design and accented colors. The SRS-X5 feels solid and, despite the bit of plastic, has a good build quality. It’s easy to pair the speaker with your phone using NFC, and the touch buttons on the top make it easy to use. If you forget to charge your cell phone, it can be convenient to plug it into the back panel and borrow power from the battery. But the most impressive aspect is the sound, which surpasses most of what we’ve heard from a small portable speaker.

After reviewing Sony’s good-but-not-great portable wireless speaker SRS-X7 ($250), which includes Wi-Fi streaming in addition to Bluetooth, I wasn’t expecting much from the sound. Its more affordable sibling, the SRS-X5 ($200, £170, AU$279). But once I turned it on, I was impressed with the amount of bass it delivers for its small size and clean, relatively natural sound, especially at more modest volume levels.
For a relatively compact wireless speaker, the simple yet elegant Sony SRS-X5 delivers great sound with powerful bass. It has a built-in speakerphone feature, a USB charging port (for charging your smartphone), NFC pairing technology, and eight hours of battery life.

Although it doesn’t sound quite as loud on battery power, the Sony SRS-X5 stands out among the best Bluetooth speakers in its size and price range.
Design-wise, it has the same simple, minimalist design as its bigger siblings – yes, there’s also the SRS-X9 ($700) – with the same gloss finish and a choice of black, red or white for the speaker grille cover . Its dimensions are 8.8 inches x 4.8 inches x 2.0 inches or 221mm x 118mm x 51mm (W/H/D).
On the top of the device, you’ll find several different buttons, some of which, including volume and preset sound modes, are touch-sensitive. And yes, that glossy finish will attract a few fingerprints, so be prepared to wipe down the speaker every now and then.

In terms of extras, there’s a speakerphone feature (it worked fine as long as I stood near the speakerphone) and NFC for smartphones that support it. You’ll also find AptX support (aptX is supposed to improve Bluetooth streaming sound, but it’s hard to tell the difference with a speaker this small), audio-in for non-Bluetooth devices and, more importantly, a USB port for reverse charging that will charge your smartphone . It can also charge tablets, but is only rated at 1.5 amps, so expect slow “charging” for larger tablets (such as a full-sized iPad), which typically require 2.1 amps.
In many ways, the SRS-X5 competes directly with Bose’s $200 SoundLink Mini, and perhaps even Bose’s SoundLink Wireless III. It’s a portable speaker, but its design feels more like an indoor speaker, weighing in at 2.6 pounds (1.2 kg) so it can be easily moved from one room to another. Battery life is eight hours, which is slightly better than the Bose SoundLink Mini’s 7 hours of battery life. The SRS-X5 matches the Mini in terms of sound quality, and depending on your tastes, it might even be a little better, with a slightly more refined sound and better bass.
