Simply put, I was spoiled by the Play:5 as I resorted to cheap portable speakers. Sonos customers looking to recreate quality audio performance will appreciate what the Play:5 has to offer.
Along with audio performance, features like Trueplay tuning to deliver the best sound regardless of optimal speaker placement and scheduling alarms to wake you up with playlists or stations are impressive.
In addition to internal speaker switching and an external redesign, the Play:5 (2nd generation) has more elegant playback controls that rely on tap and swipe gestures like smartphones rather than physical click buttons like hardware keyboards. I was impressed with the new controls during a short demo in September, as it has a more modern effect by switching from traditional buttons to almost invisible ones.

But after spending a few weeks with the new style, I found it difficult to develop muscle memory for these touch controls. They are natural, not overly specific. Tap Play/Pause to change playback, tap left or right to decrease or increase volume, and swipe left or right to skip between tracks. Visually, it’s a grand slam over the old-style controls still used by the Play:1 and Play:3.
These controls also benefit from the ability to naturally adapt in three directions. The Play:5 can be used as a single unit or horizontally in portrait orientation, where the controls are on both sides. Pressing the top control increases the volume and swipe advances to the next track without the buttons properly mapping to those functions.
Pairing two Play:5s is as easy as initial setup. The Sonos Controller app lets you assign a second Play:5 to the stereo by putting both units in stereo mode, or you can easily add or split stereo pairs later. Pairing two Play:5 units with dedicated left and right channels creates the best stereo effect, while one Play:5 on its own provides noticeable stereo separation, especially on tracks with dramatic stereo effects.
