Sonos Sub (gen 3) Wireless Subwoofer
Sonos has slowly built an empire of loyal users who appreciate not only the quality of the company’s wireless speaker lineup, but the ease of use of the system as a whole. For many of these people, the Sonos Sub represents the final piece of the puzzle.Of course, it doesn’t start with this speaker, but it’s the component that takes the enjoyment of the whole system to the next level. Not cheap. But there’s no denying that it adds great low-end depth, from subtle bass anchoring to serious deep bass thunder, and the Sonos app makes it easy to adjust bass levels without leaving your seat. So although the price is higher, the results are definitely better.
Available in glossy black or white models, the 15.3 x 15.8 x 6.2-inch Sub has an interesting shape with a small window (the “acoustic slot”) in the center of the body. It looks like a blocky display font version of the letter O. The size is similar to many sub fonts we see, but the look is more like a design piece than an eyesore, and its footprint looks more like a PC tower, making it more acceptable. .
There are some marks on the speaker. The front panel has the Sonos logo, and the left panel has status lights and a Join button for connecting to a wireless network.
Internally, the Sub employs two Class D amplifiers running dual force-cancelling drivers placed face-to-face. The sub he can dive down to 25Hz and its highest crossover frequency is his 110Hz.

You need to make sure that at least one surface of the Sub isn’t too close to a wall or otherwise obstructed. Ported acoustic slots need to breathe for efficient driver performance. The speaker can also be placed horizontally on the floor. You will need to apply the felt feet to achieve this, but be aware that the adhesive is strong and the feet cannot be removed once placed.
The sub is mounted at 4 feet to minimize floor vibrations, but results will vary depending on the type of floor you place the speakers on. The foot also creates a recessed area under the speaker that contains only his two connections: a power cable and an Ethernet port. There are no accessories other than a power cable, a cleaning shammy, and the felt feet mentioned above. Given the price, it would have been nice to have an ethernet cable for the ethernet port, but ethernet is an option. Sub says he uses Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth, so he needs an 802.11b/g 2.4GHz router if he doesn’t use Ethernet.
Setting up the speakers with your existing Sonos system (or for the first time) is just as easy as with any Sonos device. One of the company’s greatest assets is the quality of its apps. This essentially simplifies speaker setup. All you need is your Wi-Fi password and the app does the rest, walking you through a short process.
The app will first calibrate the Sub’s settings, measure the acoustics of your particular room, and walk you through the steps to adjust the Sub’s output accordingly (you can skip this step if you prefer) . Within the app, you can adjust sub settings. In addition to turning Sub on and off, you can adjust the volume level relative to other speakers in the room, toggle the phase between 0 and 180 degrees, and adjust the crossover frequency. . The default setting for the crossover frequency (the frequency at which the speakers start cutting and the subwoofer starts outputting sound) is 80Hz. However, this he can adjust between 50Hz and 110Hz, and depending on your setup and room size, adjusting this parameter can make a big difference in the overall sound signature.

Note that Sub only works with other Sonos speakers. This isn’t a big surprise, but it’s a shame you can’t use it with a Sonos amp at this price.The amp has a subwoofer connection that’s great for connecting a sub to a set of non-Sonos speakers, but it doesn’t work. (If you’re running Sonos Architectural speakers from Sonance, you can use the Sub with your amp, but that’s the only way.) Although the Sub will work with any Sonos speaker configuration, we found the Sonos Beam soundbar to be the most natural way to test. At the sub default volume level (medium or 0 on a scale of -15 to 15), bass is boosted noticeably. Switching the sub on and off reveals impressive contrast, though some listeners may still find it subtle. We have found that a little extra boost (e.g. level 2 or 3) helps a lot when listening to music with serious sub-bass depth. looks the most natural. Again, all of these findings relate to the Sonos Beam, so your results will vary depending on your setup, not to mention your room and personal preferences.

Equally noteworthy is the score’s ominous bass, which packs serious bass depth that the sub pushes forward, rumbles and thunders without unbalancing the mix. Turning it up adds serious depth to an explosion that might otherwise not sound so great. The sub isn’t inventing bass depth here, but it can certainly add cinematic sound to moments that a sub-less setup can’t create the slightest.
When the Death Star explodes in Stars Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (Spoiler Alert), the sub offers solid extra depth at its default level, but for those really craving thunder, old movies like this It can handle higher levels.A Death Star explosion at level 8 is very loud and doesn’t spoil the balance of the rest of the mix. Most subwoofers are set-and-forget speakers with hard-to-reach knobs, but the Sonos app makes it easy to dial in different content preferences.

On music tracks with heavy sub-bass, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the sub produces a powerful low-frequency rumble at its default zero setting, and a serious thunderclap when cranked up from there. You can get very ridiculous bass depth at level 15, but it’s decidedly unrealistic and not terribly good. At a much more reasonable level, you can actually adjust the amount of depth you want, even down to -15 from the default position.
