The Sonos Play:1 is the most expensive speaker in the Sonos multi-room lineup. It costs £189 and is worth considering even if you want a single wireless speaker for a full-room setup. That’s good.

Loud and rich sound from the box mounted on the bedside table makes it one of the most powerful small speakers money can buy.

Sonos Play:1 Speaker Review

While you’re here, check out the recently announced Sonos Beam Smart Soundbar, which includes Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri.

The Sonos Play:1 isn’t like other small wireless speakers. It doesn’t use Bluetooth, it doesn’t touch, and it doesn’t even take a 3.5mm plug to accept a non-wireless source.

However, the Sonos Play:1 is the most affordable speaker Sonos has ever made. It is the best, the smallest and the cheapest.

However, it is built as well as its older siblings. Sides of the Game: 1 is covered with a metal one-piece grill that curves smoothly around its sides. The top and bottom of it is plastic but still looks good.

Sonos Play:3 Review

Sonos Play: 1 is 16 cm tall and has a rounded square base of 12 cm. You can now buy all kinds of stands that attach to the thread on the back, but I still find it easy to physically draw a key. It fits on a small table, bookshelf or kitchen sideboard without taking up too much space.

It’s probably pretty damn easy speaker hardware-wise. It has a volume rocker and a play/pause button on the top and an Ethernet socket on the back. That’s right, next to the power jack and wall mounting socket.

If you’re not familiar with the Sonos system, here’s how it works: Any music sent to the Sonos Play:1 is not streamed using AirPlay or Bluetooth, but Sonos’ own Wi-Fi-based software system. You can access it through the iOS/Android app or on your computer.

In the early days of the Sonos system you had to buy a bridge to connect your speakers to your home Wi-Fi. But now it looks like a normal wireless speaker.

When the app for iOS or Android is launched, it recognizes the speaker immediately. Then select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. that’s all.

If your Sonos is running older firmware or the app is having trouble finding your Play:1, you’ll need to connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable to get started. There is such a cable in the box. Either way, setup only takes a minute or two.

Sonos is less expensive than it used to be. Until 2016, all music selection for your Play:1 had to be done through the Sonos app.

It’s an attractive and well-designed app, but many find the Sonos method of uninstallation restrictive. It also has worse music availability than the average advertising app. Spotify users can now stream directly from the Spotify app, however, just like you would a Bluetooth speaker.

How To Set Up Airplay On Your Sonos Speakers

It makes using Sonos feel more convenient, especially if you use Spotify on your phone while you’re at work.

In the UK where I use Play:1 you can use 49 services through the app. It includes many streaming favorites, including Tidal, Google Play Music, Apple Music, and Amazon Music, as well as old favorites like 7Digital, Napster, and Deezer.

Podcast fans may find that their choice is not supported. Sonos’ solution is TuneIn Radio, the most popular internet radio app and a great way to listen to podcasts. It comes ‘preinstalled’ in the Sonos app.

You can also set alarms using the app, although there is no snooze function so you better get out of bed.

The Portable $399 Sonos Move Is Like Having Two Great Speakers In One

Another important function of Sonos Play: 1 as a surround speaker in a Sonos surround sound system. Both can be paired with a Sonos Playbar, and if you want the full effect, a Sonos SUB. However, the full 5.1 setup will cost you less than £1800.

Another important feature missing from Play: 1, which is getting brighter as the months go by, is a full-range microphone. We’re starting to see some of this in wireless speakers that can connect with Amazon Alexa, letting you request specific tunes. There is no sound on any volume-controlled Sonos speakers. Since the Play:1 does not have a mic, the update is not expected.

On its own the Sonos Play:1 is a small speaker, offering excellent sound quality for a wireless speaker of its price and size.

Each Sonos Play:1 has two drivers, a mid-range/bass driver and a small tweeter. Custom bookshelf speakers use the same system. However, its main driver uses a stronger-than-average magnet to allow the speaker cone to move further than usual.

This helps the Sonos Play:1 sound big, rich and meaty for its size. Voicing is neutral, but the depth and depth of bass that the speaker can produce is impressive.

I’ve used the Sonos Play:1 on and off since its launch years ago. I was impressed with the depth of the bass and its ability to easily fill rooms every time I turned it back on.

It’s so much fun to listen to, there’s enough excitement and enough detail to make you forget the size of the speaker you’re listening to. This little guy sounds great at home playing at high volume, and I believe many people will be happy to use it as their main music source. If the price of the best Play: 5 is far-fetched, that’s something to think about.

Treble is a bit soft without the punchy clarity you usually get with a dedicated tweeter. However, I see this as a sign that Sonos has done its best to work with the limitations of the small speaker and make it as large and satisfying as possible.

Others take a different approach. For example, the Riva Arena sounds deeper and more refined than the Sonos Play: 1. It has a more hi-fi-like timbre and better dexterity.

However, the Sonos sound quality gets better as the volume increases. Riva Arena starts making noise before Play: 1 and doesn’t have the same sense of scale. It cannot fill medium sized rooms.

Any speaker Game size: 1 should deal with a glitch or two. But Sonos nailed it here.

The Sonos Play:1 is a great little speaker. If you find the Play:5 too expensive, we have no hesitation in recommending the Play:1. It performs as well as any other Sonos Play-series speaker and delivers great sound for its size and price.

However, if you’re going to listen at low volumes, you might want to consider the more refined and less dynamic Riva Arena.

The Sonos Play:1 is the most affordable Sonos speaker. It offers all the conveniences of its transportation relatives in a small, cheap form factor.
