The AP650 speakers have a clear and full sound that works well for any type of music. And they have no ports that allow water or bugs to enter.
The OSD Audio AP650 speakers are the best value we’ve found in an outdoor pair. They clearly beat anything we’ve heard from other models that cost $200 a pair. And they have full, powerful sound that can easily fill outdoor spaces up to about 1,500 square feet. The AP650 speakers have enough bass for R&B, hip-hop and rock music. And they don’t need a lot of power to produce great sound, so you can pair them with a small amplifier. Because they have a completely sealed design, there is no worry about water, dust or bugs getting in. The pair is better built than most outdoor speakers under $200, with thick enclosures and sturdy, powder-coated brackets.
The NS-AW294 speakers provide full sound, but aren’t the best choice for locations with inclement weather.
If you’re willing to spend a little less to get decent sound outdoors, the Yamaha NS-AW294 speakers are a good choice—unless you live in a place where rainstorms are common, as the port design can let in water. Get access, which can cause damage. The NS-AW294 speakers don’t sound as crisp as our picks, but they have plenty of solid bass and can play loud.
Building An Easy Wireless Outdoor Sound System
The Dayton Audio IO8XTB speaker is almost double the price and size of our OSD and Yamaha picks, but we can safely say that this speaker offers at least double the performance. Not only does it provide more bass, but the sound is clearer and smoother in the midrange and treble. Whether you listen to hip-hop, rock, folk or classical, you will appreciate the improvement.
The LU53PW is a compact, affordable fully sealed choice, but this pair doesn’t have much bass and doesn’t sound as good at very loud volumes.
Those who just want to listen to light music in the yard, and those who want to keep their investment to a minimum, will love the speakers Dual Electronics LU53PW. Although they don’t have much bass and can sound boomy when cranked up, they seem fine for background music, podcasts, and internet radio. They’re also more compact than other non-walking models we recommend, and are completely sealed to prevent water from getting inside.
The BTP525 speakers have Bluetooth and a built-in stereo amplifier, making installation even easier. They look good, but won’t fill as big an area as our other picks.

The OSD Audio BTP525 speakers are a good choice for someone who only needs sound for a small patio and someone who wants speakers that are very easy to install. Our other outdoor speakers are the traditional non-amplified type—they can fill a yard with full, loud sound, but they require complicated installation and wiring. With the BTP525, the amplifier is built in, and the power supply is waterproof. So all you have to do is mount the speakers, run wires between them and connect the power supply to the speakers with an AC outlet. An integrated Bluetooth receiver allows you to stream audio wirelessly from smartphones and tablets, and the sound quality is similar to the OSD Audio AP650 pair, although not too loud or full.
I can confidently say that I have reviewed more passive outdoor speakers (that is, non-amplified and non-Bluetooth) than any other audio journalist in the world – a fact that says a lot less about me than it does about the total there. . The lack of attention these speakers receive in audio releases. My outdoor speaker testing experience includes numerous single-product reviews and seven multi-product shoots: one for Home Theater Magazine, one for Home Entertainment Magazine, one for Sound & Vision, and four for Wirecutter. These speakers are for people who are lucky enough to have an outdoor space to call their own—whether it’s a small patio or a full yard—and enjoy listening to music or podcasts. The speakers are weather resistant, so in most cases you can ride them outside for years without worrying about them deteriorating due to water damage. (They cannot withstand weather such as hurricanes, and some models will accept water under certain conditions.) These speakers have metal grilles and fairly rigid plastic surrounds. So they will usually survive any impact from an errant volleyball, and bugs will find it difficult or impossible to nest inside them. And most of them are powered by a separate amplifier, so they don’t need to be plugged in or recharged – but you will need to run speaker wire.
How To Make Wired Speakers Wireless
Outdoor speakers rarely sound as good as a proper set of bookshelf speakers designed for indoor use. The plastic outer speaker enclosure vibrates and produces a booming sound, and the perforated metal grills block or reflect some of the sound waves from the speaker drivers. I also suspect that because manufacturers know that outdoor speakers are unlikely to pass much scrutiny, they don’t put as much effort into this design as they do indoor models.
Because you have to run speaker cables from the amplifier to the speakers, setting up a traditional pair of passive (non-amplified) outdoor speakers requires more skill and effort than mounting a portable Bluetooth speaker on your patio table. If you have some unused amplifier channels, you can cut off the speakers of the existing home-theater receiver. Most stereo receivers have a “Speakers A/B” button that allows you to move the sound to other speakers, or you can use an inexpensive speaker switcher. You can also use an inexpensive stereo mini amplifier from brands like Fossey Audio or LoxG. Add a Bluetooth adapter (or buy an amplifier with built-in Bluetooth), and you can easily access digital music files, online streaming audio services, and podcasts from a Bluetooth-equipped smartphone, tablet, or computer (as long as you have Bluetooth adapters—typically 15 to 30 feet maximum).
You will need to keep the amplifier indoors and run the wires through the walls or attic outside the home. Obviously, this operation requires a certain amount of skill and experience. Most areas allow running low-voltage cables (ie, audio, video, and network) through walls without a permit, but you should check your local building codes to confirm. Be sure to use CL2- or CL3-rated cable, which is fire-rated for safety.
The alternative to all this complexity is to get a set of outdoor speakers with an amplifier and Bluetooth built in. With this option, all you have to do is run the cables between the two speakers and connect them to the power supply. You’ll need an outdoor AC outlet nearby, and you’ll probably want to unplug the power supply when the speakers aren’t in use.

The outdoor speaker industry moves more slowly than most audio industries—it’s common for models to go on sale for years.
