Onyx Studio 3

Onyx Studio 3 – Now you’re wondering which of the older models offers the best bang for your buck: Studio 2 or Studio 3?

After all, both of these speakers received high praise, and more importantly, both were launched with hefty price tags, but can now be picked up for a lot cheaper.

The first thing you’ll notice about these speakers (and they’re essentially the same on the outside) is that they have a unique design for wireless speakers. They are quite large and bulky, with a round body supported by two hind legs.

Harman Kardon Studio 4

This design may be innovative, but it’s impractical, especially since two feet aren’t enough to hold these speakers anywhere but a perfectly flat surface.

Tends to suggest a certain dose of portability in wireless speakers, but the Onyx Studios aren’t the kind of speakers we’d see dragging anyone through a day at the beach.

However, we have to commend Harman Kardon on the exterior design, as the Studio 2 and 3 speakers not only look beautiful but also feel very premium to the touch.

The company spared no expense in choosing only high-quality materials to create these speakers, and it shows.

The textured plastic on the back feels a bit solid, as does the front grilles. Speaking of cages, these are easy to carry around in Studio 2, but get attached quickly in Studio 3.

It’s not a significant difference, but since the two speakers are basically the same, you can expect most of the differences to be this minor.

Below the grilles you encounter a passive radiator along with at least four drivers and another passive radiator at the rear. There are two tweeters and two woofers with a power rating of 15 Watts each.

Wirelessly, they cut that in half. We appreciate the flexibility this provides, but even 30 Watts of rated power is by no means a small amount for a wireless speaker. The problem is that the battery can’t really support these speakers.

Battery life here is bad. And unfortunately, we mean really bad, terrible even if you like to listen to loud music. The industry standard for wireless speakers is at least eight hours, so we’re already off to a bad start with the Onyx 2 and 3’s five-hour battery life.

But if you like to listen to your music at higher volumes, you’ll drain the battery faster as the speakers can’t get enough energy to support the music even at maximum volume for half an hour.

With speakers this big, we feel like installing a bigger battery shouldn’t be an issue, so this definitely feels like the manufacturers are unfairly withholding something from you.

So as long as you don’t have to charge these speakers frequently, they’re great even if you listen to them moderately, but if you want a smoother listening experience then maybe you should look elsewhere.

For example, the Onyx Studio 3 has dual audio, so if you can pair two of these speakers (pre-loaded with drivers) you’ll get even better sound.

Note that this feature is not available on the Onyx Studio 2, so if you see that you have purchased a second wireless speaker, you should choose the Studio 3.

The Studio 3 also takes advantage in terms of Bluetooth technology by using the newer Bluetooth 4.1 instead of the Studio 2’s Bluetooth 3.0.

Finally, both have a loudspeaker with noise and echo cancellation, so you can use the wireless speaker to answer calls.

Still, for all its inconveniences (if not faults) – aside from poor battery life and portability, for example – there’s no denying that the Onyx Studio 2 and 3 have had their fair share of success. Anyone who hears the speakers in action will understand why.

In fact, just one speaker, whether it’s the Onyx Studio 2 or 3, will feel like a full 2.1 configuration even though it’s not a dedicated subwoofer. The bass, in particular, is much stronger than you might expect from a wireless speaker.

Most importantly, it never overshadows other frequencies. Mids and highs are excellent. Having four separate speakers helps and the frequencies all give them a different feel.

In fact, we think even certified audiophiles don’t have much to complain about when it comes to audio, which sounds weird to say about a wireless speaker.

However, keep in mind that the Onyx Studio 3 is much more convenient to listen to if you intend to take the speaker throughout the house – while playing music – and maybe even plug it in the middle of a song. The speaker seamlessly switches between wired and wireless modes instantly.

Studio 2 will mute every time you plug it in, shut down in the middle of the song, and you’ll have to reboot for it to work again.

When the speakers look and sound pretty much the same, but even though they both share a lot of bugs (most notably terrible battery life), it feels a bit odd to say that the Onyx Studio 3 fixes a few other minor annoyances the Studio 2 suffered. .

If you can see yourself using the dual sound feature of the Studio 3, then it definitely lies in the cost effectiveness! (Note that both speakers will be Mono so if you want to pair the two speakers for true Stereo sound you will need the Studio 4s)

Now, we can’t talk about cost effectiveness without talking about the actual cost. After all, the reason you’re interested in Studio 2 and 3 is probably because you’ve already discovered that iterations of Studio 4 and 5 don’t fit your budget.

Both of these wireless speakers were launched at fairly high MSRPs, but their prices have since dropped. The Onyx Studio 3 had an MSRP of $450 and was worth every penny even at launch, so it’s surprising you can get it for $250 now.

The Studio 2 is a bit more affordable, usually going for $200, but we still think the Studio 3 is the better choice because while the Studio 2 looks really cool, it will go out of its way to annoy you in every other aspect. unless you keep it plugged in all the time.

Again, if portability draws you to wireless speakers, we recommend that you forget about both and check out this article where we compare the JBL Charge 3 and Flip 4, which are much easier to keep up with.

James is a self-proclaimed audiophile and tech savvy person. With a computer science degree, 5 years of experience as a software developer, and 2 years of experience testing audio devices, James is well suited to be trusted in the field. The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 is an impressive speaker. Period. It reduces speaker portability in favor of better acoustics resulting in fun, bass and rich sound clarity. If you want something for home meetings or for stationery in your living room, this is the definitive choice for this occasion.

Inside the box, you’ll find the basics to get started – a proprietary AC power cord, warranty and instructions. No extras here, just a Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 speaker.

Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 builds on the success of the original and second generation Onyx Studio. With its improved features and aesthetics, it now uses Bluetooth 4.1 for dual speaker support, increases the stay distance from your device up to 30m, and uses Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) to squeeze as much battery as possible for audio.

The soft matte legs are now in color with the rest of the body and come in five colors: white, black, burgundy, navy and grey. The conference call button moves up to join the surrounding power, volume, and Bluetooth soft-touch buttons. That means a clean and sleek front with a mesh speaker grille and Harman Kardon logo that only matches the exterior.

If you’re looking for small compact speakers, keep looking – they are by no means small at 28cm x 17cm x 26cm. But the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 is “portable” enough to carry in a bag or around the house, thanks to its rear handle and rounded design.

The handle is very handy and makes it easy to carry. I like to call it ‘semi-portable’ because no matter what, you still get something portable – not thin or small enough for any occasion. However, the larger size results in an immersive acoustic performance.

The larger footprint has a number of advantages that bring the Onyx Studio 3 to life. With two large woofers (2 x 75 mm) and two tweeters (2 x 20 mm), the bass feels rounded and reaches deep levels without overpowering the mids and highs. Keeps the bass fun while remaining fun
