Winter is coming, but the new Bose SoundLink Flex Bluetooth speaker is not idle. The portable speaker has a rugged design that is IP67 waterproof and tough enough to withstand all kinds of weather.
New Bose Wireless Speaker
It’s been a while since Bose released a brand new wireless speaker, so the Flex is a big deal. Bose has equipped the device with dual anti-passive radiators that deliver “deeper, richer tones,” while new proprietary Bose PositionIQ technology automatically detects speaker orientation for flexible sound. It is hinged or flat.

It’s not your average waterproof speaker either. Bose has finished the wall with an ultra-hard powder coating that is resistant to UV light and corrosion, so it won’t crack or crack in bright sun or snowy conditions. SoundLink Flex also floats, so it doesn’t matter if you drop it in the pool or the ocean.
The SoundLink Flex can remember up to eight recently connected Bluetooth devices, so it should be easy to switch between phones, tablets and laptops, many of which stick around the house. Battery life is claimed to be 12 hours (same as the 2019 Bose SoundLink Revolve).
The speaker can be controlled using the Bose Connect app or the speaker’s physical buttons. There’s no built-in voice assistant, but you can access your phone’s voice assistant and answer calls using the built-in microphone. Want to speed up the sound? There is an option to pair the SoundLink Flex with another Bose Bluetooth speaker for stereo sound or simultaneous playback.

How does Bose’s compact 20cm x 9cm x 5cm fare with the best waterproof speakers on the market today? It looks like it, but if you’re interested this season, it’s now available in the US for $149.99 (around £120 / AU$220). Bose has yet to confirm the SoundLink Flex in the UK or beyond.

Bose is introducing its first new portable Bluetooth speaker in a while. The $149 SoundLink Flex has a sleek design with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, 12 hours of battery life, and what Bose claims is “amazing” audio performance for its size.

At 7.9 inches wide, 3.6 inches tall, 2.1 inches deep, and weighing just over a pound, the SoundLink Flex is well-designed and has a built-in utility loop for attaching to a carabiner. It will be sold in three colors: black, smoke white and blue.
Inside the SoundLink Flex is a custom transducer that Bose says is “as big as it gets” and can produce “bass you can feel in your chest.” Using a feature Bose calls “PositionIQ,” the speaker can detect which orientation you’re facing—upright, hanging, or flat—and adjust the sound output accordingly.
The speaker has a silicone back and powder-coated steel grill, and Bose claims it’s designed to resist corrosion and prevent any fading from UV light. With this IP67 rating, it’s a pool-safe speaker, and Bose says it will float to the surface when dropped in water.

There’s nothing particularly “smart” about the SoundLink Flex, but it can connect to any Bose smart speaker or sound bar you have around the house. And you can pair it in stereo with another SoundLink Flex or various Bose portable speakers. Your phone also has a built-in microphone for taking calls and communicating with your voice assistant. (Bose still sells a very expensive portable smart speaker with built-in audio capabilities for $400, but you can do better for less.)
At $149, the SoundLink undercuts products like the Sonos Room, though it doesn’t match that speaker’s extensive feature set. Bose has to contend with impressive Bluetooth speaker competition from JBL, UE and others. However, the company’s portable speakers sound a lot better than you’d expect based on their size, so I’m looking forward to hearing what the SoundLink Flex is capable of. Continuing its leadership in the smart speaker space, the $349.95 Bose Portable Home Speaker has built-in support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, a water-resistant build, and a helpful companion app that makes setup and control easy. Audio-wise, there’s plenty of power, plenty of boost in the lows and highs, which keeps things balanced, although sometimes at high volumes the speakers can struggle in tracks with deep bass content. As a secondary satellite in a multi-room system, the Bose Portable Home Speaker is a solid addition, but as a primary sound source it costs more.
The cylindrical portable home speaker comes in black or silver and measures 7.5 inches tall, about 4.0 inches in diameter, and weighs 2.4 pounds. A thick, cloth-bound handle attaches to the top of the speaker for easy portability, and a rubber base stabilizes the body when it’s standing upright. The bottom half is covered by an envelope grill, behind which a mono driver delivers sound in all directions. There are also grill perforations on the top panel that enclose the controls and protect the microphone array.

Since 1982, he has tested and evaluated thousands of products to help you make better purchasing decisions.
The top panel houses touch-sensitive controls for power, microphone mute, and Bluetooth (for switching and pairing between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi sources). The voice assistant button lets you talk to Alexa or Google Assistant, or you can keep the microphone on and use the wake word. There’s also a play/pause control and volume up/down buttons, with two taps to play/pause to advance a track, and three taps to rewind. There’s a small status LED next to the power button, and a ring of LEDs blink different colors for different functions, like powering on or when your voice assistant is listening. There is no built-in speaker function.
The IPX4 rating for portable home speakers is definitely on the modest side of durability. The speaker can handle light spikes, but nothing major. So it’s probably not the best pool speaker, and you don’t want to subject it to any kind of water pressure. There are many competitive portable speakers with significantly higher IPX ratings, although some of them are also smart speakers.
