This also applies to CDs, DVS, controllers and computers. But here we are in a scene that combines all of the above. So, naturally, I’m interested in the possibilities of wireless technology, if only because it’s hated, and I’m a contrarian idiot fighting for someone who hates me.

So when Mackie invited me to try out the new Thumps, I asked for the 15BST Bluetooth to see if the technology really had a place in the DJ world. Let’s plow through and see if it happens.
Typically, professional PA reviews start with specs and performance, leaving looks and quality for last. But DJs pay more attention to these things than they care to admit, and especially more than road crews, so that’s where I’ll start.
PA dime. A walk around a popular audio trade show shows how they all merge into a mass of black monoliths. So, if you are not busy, it will be difficult to stand out in a very crowded market. I googled “PA speaker” and got this.
Exactly right. So, looks wise, they are clean and sharp, but not really the main consideration for the purchase. Accuracy can become an issue over time, as these edges take some serious beating, and combined with rough handling, sharp edges mean they look less than new in a short period of time. But given the tough polypropylene body, I doubt they’ll last long.

What surprised me was the weight, the lack of it. At 16kg each, the 15BSTs are much more manageable than some I’ve had to haul around the Worxlab. I think it actually represents others in this space, but I found it easier to manage them myself. Remember that people are knee deep.
On a related note, the 15BST is very versatile when it comes to deployment. They are covered with handles for easy portability and can be used in all positions, including tilting on their sides for use as floor monitors. They might even hang fakes if that’s your thing.
Very simple looks, sharp aesthetics and will probably survive in the hands of beaten DJs who throw them into small machines. We’re off to a good start.
Given the wealth of speakers and PAs I’ve played with and set up in various Worxlab locations, the 15BSTs definitely scream pure PA to me. It’s not about bedrooms, studios or workspaces. there are a couple of combo (XLR/jack) inputs and a single XLR output, and that’s your main part.

That is, five pages of the manual are devoted to various professional setups with subscribers, including a complete club system. Almost everything before 15BST is also easy to link together. I especially like the daisy chain, so you can connect multiple speakers together.
So while some users may look back and not see something like RCA, you have to remember that you are playing with adult toys here. And from these few connections, the 15BST has a lot of power and flexibility.
One thing to get used to on the back of the speakers is the selection of buttons. However, the 15BST eschews such things and instead adopts a small LCD display with a rotary control, and with it a depth of control not found on other speakers.
A review is not a place to cover all features of a product; that’s what the tutorial is for. But to give you an idea of what can be achieved, I’ll go into the dashboard a bit.

It also gives you control over the EQ. That’s right. EQ and for each channel and master as well. I found it very useful depending on the music I was playing. I can continue to use the EQ on the mixer as I’m used to and let the 15BST change the environment. This is extremely useful.
More professional users will probably prefer to work with a small desk between the sound source and the PA, and have multiple EQ ranges on different sources. But from a DJ’s point of view, it’s about buying a pair of 15BSTs to plug into an EQ mixer. and the channel options are excellent.
The 15BST has a number of convenient modes to choose from. These are essentially EQ settings that allow you to determine the 15BST for the application at hand. For example, music is a full-spectrum preset, while speech cuts the lows and pushes the mids and highs. There are also some convenient settings that take into account the use of the bottom. Obviously you can still adjust the EQ however you want, but this is a good start.

Bluetooth also comes in handy here, as you can connect speakers to share settings. Ah… so you thought it was just for playing late night music and hating them accordingly. This synchronization of settings will automatically add Bluetooth.
This is where things get interesting. As mentioned above, you can connect the speakers to each other, this feature allows for common settings. This is not all settings during testing. The EQ is for each speaker, but if the speakers are connected, you can control the master levels and modes for both from one speaker.
