Opening the box, the first thing we see are the quick start instructions printed directly on the packaging. This is a great way to find out what’s in the box and how to fix everything.
As a 2.1 speaker system, the Z407 has two satellite speakers, a subwoofer, a wireless controller and a 3.5mm cable. The two satellite speakers can be raised or placed to the side to fit comfortably under the monitor with removable stands. I like this design because I’m still using the 49-inch Dark Matter widescreen and the speakers fit under the screen.
Measuring 9.45 x 9.21 x 7.09, the subwoofer easily finds a home under my desk. All entrances and exits are also found on the back of the submarine. From left to right, we have a micro-USB input, a 3.5mm auxiliary input, and outputs for the right and left satellite speakers.

One of the most important features of the Logitech Z407 is the wireless control dial. With a range of up to 65 feet, this gray puck can control volume, play, pause and skip songs, and select the bass level of the speakers. It is powered by two batteries including AAA. Click the disc to play/pause, double-click to skip tracks, triple-click to rewind a track, and spin to adjust the volume. To change the bass level, press the top button for two seconds until it beeps, then use the dial to change the bass level. Without a representation of the bass level, you just have to listen and take it to the desired level. There is an audible signal when the level is lowered all the way or up.
Below the control dial is the battery compartment and buttons for Bluetooth and wired inputs. Bluetooth pairing is easy by holding down the Bluetooth button for a few seconds until the indicator light starts flashing blue and the speakers beep to let you know it’s in pairing mode.
Although it doesn’t come with a USB cable, I did most of my listening with a USB input from my computer. My computer found the Logitech Z407 quickly and it was easy to start using it. When connected via USB, adjusting the volume on the control dial changes the computer audio to a nice, seamless connection, which I find makes it easier because I can dial it into a number of different listening situations.
With everything set up, I was immediately impressed with the sound coming out of the Logitech Z407. The satellites deliver bright, clear highs and mids, while the ported 20W bottom-firing subwoofer rounds out the low end for big, full sound thanks to Logitech’s DSP function. Listening to pop and EDM songs is a blast on the system.

At the same time, songs with depth like Hotel California – Live On MTV come through with amazing clarity and stereo separation. The crowd is well spread throughout the track, while the deep, powerful drums carry plenty of presence.
All in all, I was very impressed with the sound coming out of the Logitech Z407. And with 40W RMS and up to 80W peak power, there’s plenty of room here to turn the sound on. In my tests, even short-term at high volume, I heard no glitches from either speaker.
While most of the experience was top notch, the chime that sounds when the control dial goes into bass tuning mode or Bluetooth pairing mode has always been the loudest in my experience. They can be really amazing. I’d like that toned down a bit, or just represented by a light on the control dial instead of an audio beep.
Overall, Logitech has delivered another great-sounding, easy-to-use speaker system. Setup is easy, I like that it has a micro-USB input, and the wireless dial is easy to use. The full-sound speakers still produce amazing clarity for the price. At $80 for a 2.1 desktop speaker setup, I was a little skeptical, but all my doubts were quickly dispelled when I started playing music from the Logitech Z407.
