Simply fantastic sound from a compact speaker. About like a big boy Bud Light Lime. Pauses or skips songs when pressed. Waterproof and shockproof, you can abuse it. Excellent wireless range, far greater than most Bluetooth devices. The battery lasts longer than the stated 15 hours.

For the past few years, our favorite Bluetooth speaker here at — indeed, one of our top tech products in general — has been the UE Boom. The $200 compact speaker sounds amazing and lasts more than 15 hours on a single charge. It stands upright, spreads stereo sound over a v-i-d-e arc, and has a footprint about the size of your morning beer. After the product became a hit at launch, UE (owned by Logitech) began iterating on the design, offering a larger version called the Megaboom and two smaller designs with similar DNA, the Mini Boom and the UE Roll.

Now Ultimate Ears has gone back to the source, producing an updated version of the Boom. It’s called, fittingly, the UE Boom 2. Sound quality is just as good as the original, and the new Boom is waterproof, more rugged and offers greater wireless range. It even does a new trick: pick it up and hit the top and skip to the next song.

The price is the same: $200. And for the money, I can’t recommend it highly enough. The new UE Boom 2 speakers are shipping before the end of September in the US, and everywhere else soon after.

UE sent me a loaner and I’ve spent the last few weeks using it as my primary speaker. The first Boom was quite robust. I’ve never worried about taking it to the park or pool, but I’d get a little nervous if rain or cocktails were expected. But not anymore. The Boom 2 meets the IPX 7 standard, which means you can submerge it in water up to several feet without any problems. Charging ports and auxiliary ports are sealed with rubber seals and small covers; volume, power, and Bluetooth pairing controls are large, seamless buttons. The speaker grill is also different: Hold the Boom and Boom 2 side by side and you’ll see a tighter weave on the material covering the Boom 2. The whole device is protected against water and sand. I’ve put mine on the shower floor a few times and even dropped it in the Pacific Ocean. Then I kicked him around in the sand. It still plays well.

When you feel like you’re holding it, just hit the top. One hit pauses or unpauses. One or two quickly move on to the next song.

There’s an innovative trick to this speaker: UE has added an accelerometer, so you can pause or skip tracks by tapping the Boom 2. You have to pick up the speaker (to prevent accidental touches?), but when the Boom 2 senses you’ holding it, tap the top. One hit pauses or unpauses. One or two quickly move on to the next song. Neat, especially if your hands are wet or the phone is across the room.

Waterproof Speakers To Take To The Beach This Summer

To my ears, the Boom 2 offers the same sound as the original at normal volume. It’s still the best I’ve heard from a speaker this size. What’s more, UE claims the new Boom is 25 percent louder. It’s hard to confirm without proper test equipment — I’m stuck with my battered old ears — but the speaker sounds a little louder. Maybe not 25 percent, but yes, louder. I can also hear some digital signal processing being applied to prevent the music from distorting as you turn up the volume. This is common among small speakers (such as Jawbone’s Jambok, Soundfreak’s Sound Kick 2, and the B&W T7), and here it’s implemented subtly enough that most people won’t notice. The compression and slight DSP dip only becomes apparent when you start it up

The range of the wireless connection is significantly improved. The first UE Boom was a champ at maintaining a signal even with my phone in another room or in my pocket, so I was already impressed. Boom 2 held the signal on the other side of the house, three rooms and 50 feet away. I tested the same distance with the original Boom and the sound stuttered. The battery lasts so long that it’s hard to measure because I don’t have all day to sit and listen to music. It’s rated for 15 hours, and in my testing it lasts longer than that between charges.

UE Boom 2 works with any Bluetooth device, from iPods to Tizen phones. If you have an iOS or Android device, you can download an app that gives the speaker additional capabilities. Of course, you can adjust the sound and you can pair two UE Boom 2, Roll or Megaboom speakers (or any combination thereof) to create two identical speaker nodes or a left-right stereo pair. Firmware updates also come via the app, so it’s worth downloading to take advantage of the updates.
