Over the past few weeks, I’ve been listening to the current generation Ultimate Ears lineup of Bluetooth speakers; UE Megaboom, UE Boom2 and UE Roll. This comes after owning the original UE Boom for about two years, listening almost daily in my car, at home, in my office, and in the parking lot while wearing my skis. That is, I have a lot of experience with Boom, and know how it sounds. First, the flagship of this line is the original Boom – which is called the Boom2 in its current generation. It is medium sized in the lineup, and crosses the line between portability and sound quality.
The UE Boom2 is the latest generation of portable and robust bluetooth speakers from Ultimate Ears. It’s roughly the volume of a pint of beer, fits in a glass holder, comes in bold colors, is minimally water resistant, is robust, and has a premium equivalent sound. From EU:
Should The Ue Boom 2 Be Your Next Bluetooth Speaker?

The cool thing about Boom2 is that it appeals to a wide audience. The speakers are small and portable, so make great travel speakers if weight isn’t your main concern. Consider trips such as car camping, road trips, tour groups (such as rolling suitcases, tour buses), etc. The speakers are sturdy, rubber-coated, and water-resistant—so great for busy families with rowdy kids who drop things, great for pulling the vacation home on the edge of the hot tub or poolside. The Boom2 also has a neat unique look, and is at home (in various colors) on the edge of the table (where I have mine now), at the kitchen bar, or in the middle of the cocktail table. The only place where it is not the best is for a more permanent setup – yes, the speakers can be powered and charged from MicroUSB, and have a line input port – but it is at the bottom of the unit. So if you want to use the Boom2 when it’s plugged in, connect to the audio aux port, have access to the on and top pair, and have it in the “correct” orientation for side-lit stereo speakers (with treble top- up and bass on the bottom), then you need to use a tripod screw mount to raise the speakers a bit. A little weird. But anyway, Boom2 is great for portability.
I tested the UE Boom2 at my home, in my office, and while traveling up and down Colorado’s ski mountains for about a month. I listen to music on Spotify from my iPhone AND Android phone, locally stored FLAC tracks from my computer, podcasts from the iOS podcast app, cast audio from Chromecast Audio and connect to the aux port, and do a many conference calls on it.
Ue Boom 2 Review: Better Than Its Predecessor In Every Way
After owning the OG Boom for two years, the Boom2 is a definite, albeit modest, upgrade. The physical fit and finish of the unit is tighter – the speaker grills are tighter. Buttons feel more clicky. The port cover at the bottom is well integrated. This unit fits in your hand and feels heavy and solid. No bumps or strange catches – every surface feels great. Turning it on puts a reassuring power on the sound, and goes straight into drum beat pairing mode. It just works well.
If youare looking for a very versatile and great sounding Bluetooth speaker that will sound great in any regular room of your home, and has a great option for hosting your small parties and campings, get this one. It can really be used in the widest variety of situations I can imagine, and looks great.
I’m glad the UE Boom2 works so well for Ultimate Ears – it’s a really great speaker that’s hard to pass up in any area. It has its drawbacks, but it is really very powerful and versatile. Grab this speaker and drag it anywhere.
