DSP (Numerical Sound Processor) D system and loudspeaker protection system ensure sound amplification. Two channels of advanced DSP amplification deliver a total power of 60 watts. I love two of his HomePods. One in the living room and one in the studio. When you’re done with work for the day, you can ask Siri to move your music from the studio to the living room. In the living room, I continue to listen to music while I cook dinner and relax. Most of the time, both his HomePods are within earshot, issuing Siri commands that turn lights on and off, add items to the grocery list, or launch shortcuts.
However, here’s the problem. It’s summer. I spend time outdoors, take road trips and visit family. Meanwhile, my his HomePod remains wall-mounted with a power cord. When he gets home, they’ll be there waiting, but his HomePods are useless when he’s out, so he started looking for portable speakers that could go over the walls of his house.
Our research led us to Libratone’s Zipp 2 and Zipp Mini 2 wireless speakers. They were the only wireless solutions to support Apple’s AirPlay 2 audio streaming technology. Libratone sent me samples of each model for testing. I’ve been using them in various places over the last few months, including around the house, in the garden, and on the beach. Both speakers provide the versatility I was looking for, expanding how and where I play my music. But none of the Zipp speakers have been as easy to use or as reliable as the HomePod. Some of the issues I’ve encountered are greatly outweighed by the Zipp speaker’s versatility, depending on your needs.

The reason I decided to give Zipp speakers a try was to expand the way I listened to music. I am an Apple Music subscriber and have a large music library that I purchased many years ago. I may still be listening to both sources, but between Apple Music’s streaming library and iCloud Music Library, I can’t tell where the music is coming from, as long as what I want to hear is available everywhere. , don’t care.
These days, that usually means streaming music directly to your HomePods, via iTunes on your Mac or Music on your iOS device, to your Apple Watch if you’re exercising without your iPhone, or via your Apple TV. means to With all these devices the problem is I can’t get the music. However, you can still play. My his HomePods and other home speakers aren’t portable, and having headphones on the go doesn’t solve the problem of sharing my music with others.
That’s where Zipp speakers come in. I wanted something that would integrate into my existing AirPlay 2 setup when I was at home and would work well in unfamiliar environments. Overall, I am happy with the results. There were some hiccups along the way, but now I can play music in more places and ways than before.
The 5 Best Portable Bluetooth Speakers Of 2022
But before I get into the details, I’d like to mention some features I haven’t tested yet. I haven’t tried the Zipp speaker’s Spotify, Tidal, or Internet radio integrations, as I only use Apple Music these days.
The speaker also works with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. I did a quick test of the Alexa integration and found it works as expected, but I rely on Siri when I’m at home and when I’m out he only wants Zipps for music, so I don’t use it much. I have not. However, if you’re looking for an Amazon Echo-like device with great sound, Zipp speakers are the way to go. Both speakers sound much better than the first generation Echo Plus I own.
Setting is relatively easy if you use the dedicated application of Libratone. Simply power on your speaker, press the Add New Product button in the app, and you’ll be guided through the process of connecting to your WiFi network. Once set up, you can play audio from apps that support AirPlay just like HomePod and other AirPlay-enabled speakers. From the app’s main screen, you can see all your added devices, add new ones, see at a glance whether the microphone used by Alexa is active, and the battery level of each speaker.
Libratone Zipp Review: Portable Airplay Speaker Has Trade Offs
In my testing, both Zipp speakers worked well with his solid WiFi connection, but not as well as the HomePod. Even with a strong Wi-Fi signal in my house, Zipps sometimes disconnected from the network. When playing music, skipping may occur from the speakers. If the speaker is on but not in use, a network outage will cause a beep warning you to disconnect and reconnect later.
Also note that the Zipp speaker shows up as a device in Apple’s Home app, but you can’t do anything about it other than remove it as an accessory. You can’t play or pause music or set alarms like you can with the HomePod, but the lack of features is the same as with speakers connected to AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express base stations.
When you’re in your backyard with a weak Wi-Fi signal, AirPlay 2’s large buffer keeps your music playing most of the time, but it cuts out more often. But Zipps’ versatility starts here. If you’re in an area with weak or no Wi-Fi, Zipps can use Bluetooth instead. This is exactly what I did during his 4th of July vacation. I took both speakers to the beach, and even where there was no WiFi, I was able to stream his 4G music from my iPhone and play it on his Zipp speaker via Bluetooth.

But this trip to the beach revealed another downside to the Zipps. To use the speakers with the new WiFi network, I had to configure them both as new devices in the Libratone app. I had trouble connecting and quickly gave up and had to use bluetooth at the beach, so I switched back to bluetooth. It wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things as AirPlay is where it’s most convenient
