If you’ve been following our headphone reviews this year, you’ll have seen that we’ve reviewed a number of headphones that have integrated lighting. This trend got us wondering – why don’t battery powered LED lights make music better? Do children today attract each other’s attention? If we were asked if we thought it was a good idea to add lights to the speaker, we’d probably say something old and neat. Luckily, no one asked for our opinion – someone from JBL gave us the Pulse 3 and asked us to try it out. We were surprised: we were playing with beautiful lights.

JBL Pulse 3 is a Bluetooth speaker with a built-in light show. At first glance it looks like a lamp – the top two-thirds is clear plastic, while the bottom third contains the hard fabric speaker panel, charging and auxiliary audio ports, and control buttons. The Pulse 3 is about the size of a 1-liter water bottle and weighs just over two pounds—it’s portable, but not something you’ll carry around in your bag. It appears to be very well made with high quality plastics, solid stitching and an overall solid feel. Our review unit is black, but the Pulse 3 is also available in white. There’s very little extra in the box – just a USB cable and wall charger, although we thought a soft protective case would have been a nice addition. In our testing, the Pulse 3 maintained a Bluetooth connection with an iPhone up to about 30 feet and played for about 12 hours from the iPhone at low to medium volume.

The Pulse 3 has an analog audio port, but you’ll most likely be playing music via Bluetooth. No Bluetooth codecs are supported here – no aptX or AAC – which is a good thing given the limited sonic capabilities of a speaker like this (more on that later). While volume, track, power, Bluetooth, entertainment mode and lighting effects can be controlled via dedicated buttons on the back of the Pulse 3, the buttons are flush with the speaker’s casing, and only a few are on the back; making it difficult to tell which button is being pressed without looking. In practice, this isn’t a problem, as all Pulse 3 functions can be easily controlled from your iPhone using the built-in controls and JBL’s companion app.

The JBL Connect app is free to download from the app store and is generally well designed. When prompted, the app will find a connected Pulse 3 via Bluetooth and switch to Stereo and Party modes, which let you wirelessly sync battery levels, brightness sliders and multiple JBL speakers. No matter where you spend most of your time, there are lighting effects to choose from. Seven preset modes are offered – Rainbow, Jet, Wave, Fire, Wave, Burst and Equalizer (actually a spectrum analyzer, but we’re on that slide) and a mode that lets you customize light patterns from nine additional patterns. Either way, users can use the iPhone camera to put highlighter on their feet. We tried the camera’s recording function, but ultimately preferred the vivid colors that the Pulse 3 produces on its own. Big details: speaker volume level is displayed by speaker lights; As the volume increases, a portion of the lamp fills with light from the bottom up, changing from purple-green to yellow along the way.

There are 1.5-inch passive radiators on the top and bottom of the Pulse 3 that really move the air around a lot and improve the bass performance of the Pulse 3. JBL promises “360-degree sound” with the Pulse 3 – the speaker configuration isn’t visible, but it’s fair to say that the speaker The Pulse 3 or the light display are not indicative – the experience is the same everywhere. However, it’s clear that the lights are really the main attraction here – the Pulse 3 can certainly be loud, but the sound is a little more impressive. Bass hits hard but isn’t well defined; some low frequencies resonate, others are “fundamental”. Belly and female voices are heard clearly, but male and mid-range voices are long and thin. To be honest, we’re not expecting an audiophile experience from speakers of this size; Just as the Pulse 3’s lights aren’t as bright as a high-definition display, its smaller drivers won’t replace a custom audio setup. Pulse 3’s lights and sounds are the best for creating atmosphere, which is what you want when you’re hosting a party, hanging out in the park, or casually listening to background music.

The Pulse 3 has some impressive features that we didn’t get to try. Users can wirelessly sync the 100 Pulse 3 speakers or any speaker in the JBL collection, and even assign the speakers as left and right channels for a better stereo image. It’s hard for us to imagine anyone spending enough money to test the limits of these headphones for entertainment, but we’d love to try out the stereo feature, which could improve the sound of the Pulse 3. While no one’s inviting us to the pool this month, we can confirm that the Pulse 3 can survive and swim underwater, according to the IPX7 rating. We were surprised that the Pulse 3 didn’t have a simple ‘light mode’; we think many users want to have fun with only one color and brightness level
