As smart speakers grow in popularity, we’re starting to see hybrid options that work over Wi-Fi when you’re connected at home, and standard Bluetooth speakers when you’re out and about. At $179.95, the JBL Link Portable isn’t more expensive than some of the company’s similarly-sized Bluetooth models, and offers Wi-Fi connectivity with Google Assistant compatibility, waterproof charging and solid bass. Considering the Sonos Move is another powerful hybrid speaker at $400, the Link Portable seems like a bargain. There are more powerful and better sounding speakers out there, but few can match the performance of the Link for the price.
Available in black, blue, or gray, the 6.7-by-3.5-inch (HW) 1.6-pound portable looks like a cylinder, but actually has four wide rounded corners, making it a nearly flat panel. Comes with a charging base that connects to power via a removable USB-C cable. The speaker itself has a fabric grill, but the Link Portable isn’t waterproof – it’s IPX7 rated so it can be submerged in up to one meter for 30 minutes, so it can withstand splashes, rain and even a splash (though it’s a speaker on its own) as well as a charging dock. is incorrect).

The Link Portable uses Bluetooth 4.2 and can also stream over Wi-Fi. Once set up with Wi-Fi, you can control the speaker by saying “Hey Google.” If you don’t have a microphone, it can be turned off. Add in AirPlay 2 and Google Cast, and there are several ways to get audio to the Link Portable, but there’s no way to use a cable.
In the test, the Wi-Fi setup process went smoothly. We also found the mics to be very responsive to our requests – playing music, getting weather updates or getting game scores was quick and easy.
JBL rates the Link Portable’s battery life at up to 8 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels.
Inside, the mono speaker uses a 49mm, 20-watt driver that delivers a frequency range of 65Hz to 20kHz. On tracks with deep sub-bass content, like The Blade’s “Quiet Sound,” it delivers clear bass depth, but no one looks in the room for a hidden subwoofer. At maximum volume, the speaker’s output isn’t too loud, but it does get loud enough and doesn’t distort. DSP (digital signal processing) is included to prevent distortion, but it reduces the bass depth in these tracks. At more modest levels, the bass sounds fuller.
Jbl Link Music Smart Speaker Review: Pretty Good Things In A Pretty Small Package
Bill Callahan’s “Driver,” a slightly deeper bass track in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Link Portable’s overall sound signature. The drums on this track have a full, natural sound – they don’t thunder like they can on a bass speaker. Instead, the standout hit here is Callahan’s baritone vocals, which get plenty of extra midrange richness and, thankfully, enough high-mids to keep the sound balanced. There’s clarity and balance across the frequency range, but if you’re looking for big bass, the speaker is too small to deliver at the front end, although it’s never thin or fragile.
On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Wild Church,” the drum loop gets an ideal amount of high pitch, allowing the beat to hold its own while the vinyl crackles and clangs are amplified and pushed forward. mixed, so high frequencies have a lot of sculpting. Sub-bass synth hits are featured more than they punctuate the page – we hear rough notes, but less sub-bass thrusts that a more powerful system could deliver.
