At $119.95, the Link Music is JBL’s smallest, most affordable speaker. With support for AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, Chromecast and Google Assistant voice commands, it offers no shortage of features. Sonically, you can expect surprisingly high volume levels for the size, with rich bass and a decent balance between low and high. That said, this is a mono speaker finish with a single driver, so if you’re looking for booming bass, you’ll need to spend more.

The Link Track measures 5.3 x 4.4 inches (HW), weighs 1.6 pounds, and is available in light or dark gray models. The outer panel of the speaker is covered in fabric, and the upper panels have pinhole microphones for Google Assistant control, as well as the plus/minus buttons for volume control and the central Google Assistant button for playing playback and alarms/clocks. Holding down the button for two seconds activates Google Assistant if you don’t want to use voice commands.

The speaker’s rear unit contains a Bluetooth pairing button, a microphone button (when the microphone is muted, yellow LEDs appear behind the fabric grill on the front panel), and a connection for the included power cord. The underside of the speaker has a rubber coating to stabilize it on a flat surface.
Setting up Link Music to use the Google Assistant requires the Google Home app. Aside from entering your Wi-Fi password, the app handles just about everything else for you, after which you’re ready to play audio or control Google Assistant with hands-free voice commands. If Link Music needs a software update, the Google Home app will install it automatically.

We found the voice control features to work quite well. The microphones carry our voice commands even when the music is played at high volume, and there is no command at all.

Behind the grill, Link Music gets a single 20-watt driver that delivers a frequency range of 60Hz to 20kHz. It is compatible with Bluetooth 4.2, and works on wireless networks 802.11a/b/g/n/ac.
On songs with intense low-bass content, such as the Knife’s “Shout of Silence”, the speaker delivers an impressive low-frequency response for its size and price. The thumps are strong and there’s no distortion at high levels – although DSP (digital signal processing) at maximum volume thins the bass considerably.
Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a song with very little deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of Link’s musical signature sound. The drums on this track can sound unusually thunderous on bass-forward speakers, but through Link’s lightning driver, the drums sound more balanced. Instead, it’s Callahan’s baritone vocals that take up most of the bass presence – they sound even richer than usual, and if there’s not proper high-mid presence here too, the mix will compromise the sound. Acoustic strums and higher register attacks allow for a higher midrange and higher frequency presence to keep the harmony balanced, but surprisingly, even in a speaker of this size, this is a muted sound signature. Link Music cannot reproduce very deep fades, so the focus is on the low and low and mid frequencies, and they are pushed forward more than the highs.
On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop gets enough high-mid presence in the attack to retain its power, but what seems to get more of a boost is the vinyl. crackling and smiling which usually returns after the position. Here it is pushed forward, showing some vibrations in the height. The drum loop pressure is also slightly increased with low boost and low mids, but the sub-bass synth attacks that indicate the beat are more indicative than delivered – we easily hear their top notes and not much of The ominous deep bass can often overpower the mix. The vocals on this track are delivered with solid clarity, and perhaps a touch of extra sibilance.

. Brass, strings and higher register vocals sound a little less bright and sharp than usual – the sound signature feels altered in the low notes, with some detail in the highs. It’s not loud, but it’s less than the light we’re used to hearing.
For its size and price, the JBL Music Link delivers some palpable bass thump along with enough balance in the highs to keep things sounding rich and full without drifting into flimsiness or lack of detail. For a kitchen or office speaker, it probably has more power than you’d expect from the standard frame. At $120, it’s a solid value, although you can get an Amazon Echo (3rd generation) for less. And if you’re looking for a little more power and bass depth in a smart speaker, the $130 Sonos One (Gen 2) and $200 Amazon Echo Studio are solid options.
