The JBL Flip 5 was released on August 1, 2019 as an update to the JBL Flip 4 – already one of the most affordable portable Bluetooth speakers on the market.

While the Flip 4 isn’t our top pick for a small Bluetooth speaker when traveling, it’s at the top of the list and its low price might make it a great choice.

We’ve compiled what critics and consumer groups have to say about it and its predecessor, the JBL Flip 4, into one big comprehensive review, comparing the two to help you decide.

First up is the comparison chart, then we’ll analyze whether it’s worth buying the new model, or opting for the older (cheaper!) Flip 4.

The first edition was published on 11 January 2019. Fully updated on 11th July 2019, all information is now available. Update again on July 19. Updated 29 October 2019 to include more meta-comments. Updated June 26, 2020 with upgrade option. Updated August 21, 2020 with links to new JBL information around the site.

Up to 12 hours; Bigger capacity, but bigger drives, so overall battery life. The Flip 5 runs for 10 hours at high volume; Fully charged in 2.5 hours.

It is never guaranteed that an upgrade will be better than the previous model. Of course, so are JBL speakers. The JBL Flip 4 is widely seen as an improvement over the Flip 3, but the JBL Charge 3 is often criticized by critics for sounding inferior to its predecessor, the JBL Charge 2+.

Various audio and tech geeks who have listened to the Flip 4 have generally praised it for its performance and robust volume.

The Flip 5 sounds better. In particular, it is louder and the bass is more powerful, sharp and convincing. Voice is crisp and clear, and even at high volumes, the high frequencies aren’t distorted (and it’s incredibly loud for its small size). The new track audio player has been improved to provide clearer definition.

So far, others have mixed opinions about the Flip 5. Some argue that the Flip 5 has great, engaging bass, but lacks the clarity of the Bose Revolve or Revolve+ — but they’re more expensive. However, one audiophile YouTuber felt that the JBL Flip 4 was louder and that the 4 had a better soundstage than the 5. So far, the Flip 5 is considered the best option for its size and price, but we’ll continue to add an overview of what reviewers are saying about the space over the coming weeks.

Some extra speaker power means more battery drain, but the JBL Flip 5 has a larger 4800 mAh battery (compared to the Flip 4’s 3000 mAh). That’s why the overall advertised battery life of both speakers ends up the same: 12 hours. The Flip 5 can play for 10 hours at high volume.

Another notable difference is the Flip 5’s USB-C port instead of the old, reliable mini-USB-B jack we’re used to on the Flip 4. So it’s more future-proof, and the new ports are waterproof and don’t require a cover like the JBL Flip 4’s mini-USB. No flip means fewer things to break, and USB-C means you can use the same charging cable you’ve used for other phones and computers of this type that you’ve bought in the last year or two.

As for water resistance, both the Flip 4 and Flip 5 are IPX7 waterproof, which means they can withstand a 30-minute dunk. You shouldn’t

Being underwater is fine for them, but they don’t mind falling into the pool or showering with you.

Note that the JBL Flip 4 and Flip 5 float; For a similar floating speaker in the same price range, go for the excellent Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2.

The JBL Flip 5 does not have speakers. (It was originally announced to include one, but JBL ended up not including the feature.) So if you prefer to take calls through the speaker, you’ll have to use the Flip 4, which has a speaker instead. However, we think most people generally find it more convenient to use the speaker function directly on their phone than to route calls through a separate speaker.

If you would like to pair new speakers with older JBL speakers, please note that the technology for doing so has changed. JBL Flip 4 is compatible with Connect+ speakers, while JBL Flip 5 is only compatible with the latest JBL standard PartyBoost, which provides a way to create true stereo sound on the go. JBL is not expected to release a firmware update to convert older Connect+ Speakers to the PartyBoost system.

The JBL Flip 4 and 5 are great speakers, but our favorite is the tall soda can-sized Ultimate Ears Boom 3. Simply put, it provides more clarity, the bass is deeper, heavier and more convincing, and it delivers a 360-degree sound (meaning it’s the same no matter which side you’re on). I have listened to many speakers for this site over the years and the Boom 3 is the one I take with me when I travel. In this mid-size case, we generally prefer the Ultimate Ears speaker sound a little above JBL’s similarly sized offerings, but JBL speakers are generally less expensive and nearly as good.

Just like Flip Speaker, Boom 3 is completely waterproof. In addition, it is dust-resistant, very sturdy and easily survives a drop. If you want to shell out the extra dough, you can check out the differences between the Flip 5 and the Boom 3.

Jbl Flip 4 Wireless & Bluetooth Speaker Review

There is always something new and great to come. Bluetooth speakers contain batteries, and since all batteries have a limited number of charges over their lifetime, you may need to replace your speaker after five years or so. So it is not a lifelong decision.

Thanks to improved drivers, the Flip 5’s sound is stronger, crisper and louder, and USB-C charging is a plus if you’re using it with other devices. If it’s worth the extra money, go for it, but the Flip 4 isn’t a bad choice.

The cylindrical solid speaker has a decorative plastic mesh on both sides. It can easily be overlooked. A durable grill allows sound to travel freely, but does not protect the device from dust and debris. The buttons are responsive enough, large and easy to push. It has play/pause and volume buttons.

The connect button can be used to connect multiple (up to 100!!) flip 4 speakers. That’s fine, but remember
