The bottom base of the speaker has also been cleaned. Gone is the rubber plate, and on the JBL Charge 5 we see molded rubber pieces along with a woven wire cover. So when you put it down, it looks like a rugby ball on a table. When used to stand, rubber feet do not stick out like the big toe. On the back of the JBL Charge 5, you will find a flap that hides the waterproof USB-C port and the USB-A port used to charge the phone.

The JBL Charge 5 removes the 3.5mm AUX input found on the Charge 4. This is a problem, as the Charge 5 becomes a Bluetooth-only device.

Controls are located above the speaker, allowing you to quickly access commonly used controls such as volume, play/pause and power on/off. You can skip tracks by double-clicking the play button, but there’s no way to go back. There’s also a PartyBoost button for when you want to connect to other PartyBoost-compatible speakers, such as the Flip 5. The JBL Charge 5 is rated for 20 hours of playtime on a full charge, which is the same as its predecessor. It charges via USB-C, and takes about 4 hours to fully charge. JBL didn’t add a microphone to the Charge 5, so it will serve mostly as an audio output.

Pairing with JBL Charge 5 is easy. The JBL Charge 5 now has Bluetooth 5.1, and during my testing the connection stability was great and I encountered zero issues. JBL Charge 5 also supports multi-point connection, so two devices can be connected to the speaker at the same time. Audio will automatically play from any device that plays media.

Whether you like to party or blast your music, you’ll be glad that the JBL Charge 5 can turn up the volume. Note that at higher volumes, some distortion can be heard when the treble starts to hit hard.

The new Charge 5 adds a separate tweeter along with its two bass radiators, which is expected to deliver higher levels than the Charge 4. The JBL Charge 5 is also louder (40W) than the Charge 4 (30W). The overall sound signature of the JBL Charge 5 is quite balanced. The bass is underpowered and has good presence to deliver a fuller low-end sound without sounding too flat. Sub-bass presence is average – it doesn’t go deep enough to produce sound and reverb, but still occasionally hits heavy bass.

The midrange is given more clarity and importance in the overall mix, with voices and instruments moving forward in the spectrum. The highs sound bright and are best enjoyed at 30-70% volume. When the volume is raised, the treble produces a greater sibilance. Compared to the older version of the JBL Charge 5 Charge 4, the new Charge 5 sounds better and wider in the high end with better separation of instruments at every frequency.

With the fifth generation, JBL presents its successful premium model with a worthy successor. Although it has all the features of its predecessor, the Charge 5 also comes with a face lift with improved sound performance, but it sounds more boring due to the more prominent treble.

In the range that JBL has with its Bluetooth speakers, one of the most popular examples is getting a successor. The best-selling JBL Charge 4 has been on the market since 2018. After two and a half years, the JBL Charge 5 has a facelift and technical innovations.

Jbl Flip 5 Vs Jbl Charge 4 Review

In our review, we take a closer look and show you if the new generation is worth buying and what it does better than its predecessor. Does the new Charge 5 make sense for Charge 4 owners? Is the JBL Charge 5 the right entry-level device for the world of Bluetooth speakers?

When you first take the new JBL Charge 5 out of the box, the first big thing that catches your eye is the new facelift. The new generation has a big belly, the logo written on the front has become bigger and it is directly eye-catching. We also liked some of the new design elements on test, like the slightly different quieter bass drivers and the rubber lip that surrounds the speaker tips.

JBL is not starting a design revolution with the JBL Charge 5 compared to its predecessor. However, they were able to give the new arrival a new and interesting touch and significantly differentiate it from the design of its predecessor. For example, there is also a new battery display. The battery indicator is now more accurate and more attractive on the front, in the form of a bar. The controls, like the buttons, continue in the same style as before. They keep their usual position on top of the box.

Unsurprisingly, the design and craftsmanship still retain the same quality and durability that JBL is known for, which is also reflected in the technical specifications. While the JBL Charge 4 had to settle for a water resistance level of IPX7, the new JBL Charge 5 has a protection level of IP67. While the original design was “only” waterproof, the new Charge 5 is therefore dustproof
