JBL has options at every price point, but for the price, the best speakers are always the charging series. JBL Charge 4 is a few years old now but you can still find it in various stores. At first glance, the Charge 4 doesn’t look any different from the previous Charge 3. But if you look a little closer, you’ll start to notice some slight differences in build and size. The Charge 4 is slightly larger by about a centimeter in each direction, but it’s also heavier at 165 grams (7.05 ounces). While this isn’t a big deal, it’s not good news if you rely on carrying speakers. If you are traveling, an ounce in the morning is a pound in the evening. That said, there shouldn’t be any significant difference to daily activities. You should be able to throw this in a bag with no problem.
JBL has also upgraded the battery from 6000mAh in the Charge 3 to 7500mAh in the Charge 4. Apart from this, the Charge 4 still retains most of the features that made the Charge 3 great.

On paper, you will notice that the JBL Charge 4 has Bluetooth 4.2 instead of the old 4.1, but the real difference is related to JBL Connect. If you’ve never owned a JBL speaker, JBL Connect is a feature that allows you to connect multiple speakers together to play music together. It’s not really the same as the Sonos system, but if you’re throwing a party it’ll definitely get the job done. JBL Connect+ is the most advanced version of JBL Connect, and it allows you to connect up to 100 JBL speakers instead of just one or two. If you have an apartment, this will be a cool party trick.
Unfortunately, if you buy a speaker that is more compatible with the standard JBL Connect (like the Charge 3), it will not be compatible with the new connected version. So if you and some friends are going to throw 100 of them at the “Project X” event, this might be the video that might interest you. For the average person, I doubt it.

Although the JBL Charge 4 has a larger battery capacity than the Charge 3, both are rated to get the same 20 hours of continuous playback. During our testing, we were able to get the Charge 4 to play music for 13 hours and 46 minutes straight. Not the 20 hours they promised, but still not bad. This will work though if you decide to charge your device via USB-A before. You’ll also find a 3.5mm input and a USB Type-C input on the back, but only Type-C can be used for charging. So if you have a Type-C to Type-C cable and you’re hoping to charge your new Android phone or iPad Pro with this port, you’re in luck. You should use the USB-A port for everything related to charging.
This is the part that surprised me the most because I expected the sound quality to be better than the Charge 3, but it seems to be similar to my ears. JBL went with two drivers this time, but aside from a few minor complaints, I don’t think most buyers of these speakers will notice. Just like the previous model, the new JBL Charge 4 has a lower end of its size which undoubtedly helps the radio pass through.
