We’ve noticed there’s already an empty section in your cart We need to remove your current cart to add a new item If you want to prove yourself and get the new JBL Connect+, this is definitely the way to go. Otherwise, there isn’t much difference between this and the Charge 3 before it (although USB-C charging is certainly nice).

If you’re in the market for Bluetooth speakers, one brand tends to stand out more than others. JBL has options in every price segment, but for the price, its best speakers are always the Charge series. The JBL Charge 4 speaker is a few years old now but you can find it at various retailers. How has it held up since its initial release?

At first glance, the Charge 4 doesn’t look that different from the previous Charge 3 but when you get closer you start to notice slight differences in design and size. The Charge 4 is slightly larger by about a centimeter on each side, but it also weighs 165 grams (7.05 ounces). While that’s not a big deal, it’s not good news if you’re relying on the speaker’s capabilities. If you’re hiking, an ounce in the morning is a pound in the evening That said, it shouldn’t make a practical difference in daily activities You should be able to throw it in a backpack without any problems

JBL has also upgraded the battery from 6000mAh on the Charge 3 to around 7500mAh. Additionally, the Charge 4 still retains many of the features that made the Charge 3 so great.

Yes, the tough waterproof fabric returns with an IPX7 certification that allows you to submerge it in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. It floats slightly if you drop it in the water so you don’t have to worry about losing it if it falls off the boat or deck. Like many new JBL speakers over the past few years, these feature exposed dual-pack radiators on each side.

Editor’s Note: Sarah tested the JBL Flip 4’s IPX7 rating by submerging it in a pool for about 10 seconds, and it broke. The speaker still produced sound, but the volume was very loud. JBL customer support has stated that the one-year warranty has expired, and defective products outside of warranty cannot be replaced free of charge. JBL is a company whose biggest selling point is waterproofing, this was disappointing

Up top, you’ll find a Play button that rises above the fabric along with an on/off button and Bluetooth. At the bottom is a small built-in stand with five small LED lights that let you know how much battery life is left when you touch the on/off button, and the back has a rubber seal that protects all ports from water. If you’re going to take it to the beach or rock the pool you’ll definitely want to make sure it’s locked.

The Charge 4 has a dynamic Play button and Bluetooth pairing button lights.

Connecting to the speaker may not be as easy as your AirPods, but it’s still very easy. Once you turn it on, you just need to press the Bluetooth button that’s next to the power button to enter pairing mode. From there, simply search for the device in your Bluetooth settings to pair it

If you can’t tell already, the JBL Charge 4 isn’t all that different from the previous model. It’s repetitive, but the connection is where things start to fall apart. The Charge 4 has all your bases covered with a solid connection of up to 30 feet as a Bluetooth speaker. The game controls work well and the buttons are nice and clicky, although I wish the buttons were white plastic or all illuminated like the on/off button, as it’s hard to see which is which in the dark. The Charge 4 doesn’t have a built-in microphone so you might be upset if you prefer to use your speakerphone for calls. Personally, I never want a microphone on my speaker and I always fumble to hang up my phone every time I get a call, so this is a positive for me but I can see it as a deal breaker for others. .

Jbl Charge 4 Vs Xtreme 2: Comparing These Mid Sized Road Party Speakers

On paper, you’ll notice that the JBL Charge 4 has Bluetooth 4.2 instead of the old 4.1 which is great, but the real difference has to do with JBL Connect. If you’ve never owned a JBL speaker, JBL Connect is a feature that allows you to sync multiple speakers together to play a single song. It’s not quite the same as a Sonos system, but it can definitely get the job done if you’re having a party. JBL Connect+ is an improved version of the old JBL Connect, and lets you connect up to 100 JBL speakers together instead of just one or two. If you have a fancy house, this would be a great party trick

Unfortunately, if you bought an older speaker with standard JBL Connect (like the Charge 3), it’s not compatible with this new Plus version. So if you and some friends throw together 100 of these and have a “Project X” style party, this might be a feature you’ll be interested in. For the average person, I doubt it

If you’re having trouble connecting to your Charge 4, it might be best to reset it and start from scratch. To do that just follow these steps:

Although the JBL Charge 4 has a larger battery capacity than the Charge 3, both boast 20 hours of continuous playback. During our tests, we managed to get the Charge 4 to push 13 hours and 46 minutes of live music. Not the 20 hours they promised, but still not bad. It will be nice if you decide to charge your device through the USB-A output on the back. You will also find a 3.5mm input and a USB Type C input on the back, but Type-C can only be used for charging. So if you have a Type-C to Type-C cable and were hoping to charge your new Android phone or iPad Pro through that port, you’re out of luck. You must use the USB-A port for everything related to charging

This is the part where I was really surprised because I was expecting an improvement over the Charge 3 in sound quality, but it sounds the same to my ears. JBL went with a single driver over dual drivers this time, but aside from minor complaints, I don’t think most people buying these speakers will notice. Like the previous model, the new JBL Charge 4 has a low end of power for its size which is certainly helped by that passive radiator.

Like the old Charge 3, this design will sound great in large rooms and open spaces—mainly because the bass tends to lose power faster than the highs. If you use the Charge 4 in a barn, yard, or garage: the sound will be a little less bass-heavy and more pleasant.
