When it comes to Bluetooth speakers, there seems to be one company that stays in the conversation. JBL has speakers at almost every price point, from the small and portable JBL Clip 3 to the large Xtreme 2, but if you’re looking for something in between, the Charge 4 is probably the speaker for you. As with the fourth iteration of the product, JBL had plenty of time to refine it. So how is this? Is the JBL Charge 4 worth the money?

Jbl Charge 4 Review: Jbl Charge 4 Bluetooth Speaker Gets Some Key Upgrades

This JBL Charge 4 review comes from the audio experts at our website SoundGuys. Check out their detailed description of the JBL Charge 4.

At either end of the speaker, the Charge 4 continues to rock the idle radiators. The JBL Charge 4 is very similar to the previous model, but there are significant differences that you should be aware of: On the other hand, the Charge 4 is a little bigger, both in size and weight. It’s not a huge difference, but if you’re planning to throw this speaker in your backpack when you go camping, every ounce counts. The internal battery has also been upgraded to a larger 7,500mAh battery, which may explain the slightly heavier weight.

In addition, the overall design of the Charge 4 has not changed much. You still get IPX7 waterproof fabric, which makes the speaker waterproof in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, and a 30W USB output under the waterproof cover, which allows you to charge devices. There are dual radiators at the end of the speaker. Not only do these come in at a very low price, but they look just as good. Then there are the control and playback buttons on top, slightly raised to help you know where they are in low light. There is a small built-in stand at the bottom so you can place the speaker without fear of it tipping over. In addition, five small LED lights indicate the approximate battery life.

On the top of the Charge 4 are the playback buttons, and the power button and Bluetooth pairing button light up.

Jbl Charge 3 Vs Charge 4: Pros & Cons And Verdict

Like most Bluetooth speakers, the Charge 4 has a range of 10 meters, and I didn’t experience any skipping or stuttering during testing unless I was deliberately testing the range. The gaming controls are nice and clicky, although the buttons are a little hard to see in the dark, as only the middle two (the power button and the Bluetooth pairing button) are illuminated.

So far, everything about the Charge 4 is very similar to the previous JBL Charge 3, but that’s where the differences start to show. Not only does the Charge 4 have the new version of Bluetooth 4.2, but it also has JBL Connect+, which allows you to connect up to 100 JBL speakers at onceā€”not possible with the Charge 3. I don’t know how much this feature is needed, but at least you know you have the chance to have a giant JBL rave with you and 100 other friends.

Under the waterproof cover on the back, we find the previously mentioned USB output, as well as a headphone jack if you want to connect a device, and a USB-C port for charging. You can charge your phone and Bluetooth speaker with the same cable, which is great considering the old JBL Charge 3 only had microUSB.

There isn’t much difference in battery life between the JBL Charge 3 and Charge 4. Both speakers are rated for 20 hours of continuous playback. In our test, the Charge 4 got less than that: 13 hours and 46 minutes of continuous play, which is still pretty solid. One thing to note, the USB-C port on the back is only for charging the speaker, so if you were planning to use it as a charging port for your devices, you’re out of luck.

Review: Jbl Charge 4

In terms of sound quality, the Charge 4 doesn’t seem like a big improvement over the previous version. That’s not a bad thing, considering the Charge 3 was one of the best-sounding Bluetooth speakers we’ve tested.

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats are well separated and easy to follow, but the speaker suffers from the same lack of midrange clarity as the previous model. The vocals were still audible, but it felt like the other instrumentals of the song took a back seat.

From the LP where the vocals sounded like they were competing with the strings and backing vocals of the chorus. If you’re a loud fan, you don’t have to worry, because nothing sounds harsh, and I didn’t hear any distortion even at high volume. All in all, it seems like JBL just focused on tweaking the speaker to sound as close to the Charge 3 as possible, and it’s surprising how close they came to moving it to just one driver. But if you liked the sound of the last Charge 3, you’ll love this one too.

The Charge 4 has an IPX7 waterproof coating, so you don’t have to worry about water damage.

You should definitely get the Charge 4. Well, kind of: When the JBL Charge 4 first came out, it seemed pretty expensive. After all, you can find many of the same features on the older and cheaper Charge 3. The only real difference that matters to most people is the JBL Connect+ feature and USB-C charging. If these features are worth the ~$25 difference, more power to you.

Don’t expect much improvement with the Charge 3, as you get the same sound quality, the same IPX7 rating, and the same battery life. But given that the Charge 3 is already a great speaker, naturally the Charge 4 is too. If you already own a Charge 3, there’s no reason to rush this model, but if this is going to be your first Bluetooth speaker, you won’t be disappointed, as the Charge 4 is still one of the best.

The JBL Flip 4 is one of JBL’s most successful portable speakers. Thanks to its slim, cylindrical design, it can easily slip into a bag, and has the same IPX7 rating as its big brother, the Charge 4. Thanks to its microphones, the speakers can also be used as hands-free speakers. At under $100, it’s a great little travel companion. If you want the latest technology, get the Flip 5, but if you want the best value for money on your trip, go for the fourth generation model. In order to pair the Charge 4 JBL BT speaker with a Bluetooth source device or download the speaker’s connection information from that device, you need to know how to enter pairing mode on the speaker.
