The JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass keeps things simple. This is a single soundbar and wireless subwoofer combination with Bluetooth streaming. No flashy video like the Roku smart soundbar or his flawed JBL Link bar, no multi-room audio like the Sonos Beam, no built-in Alexa or Google like almost every speaker these days. I don’t even have an assistant. In fact, it just sounds good. As you can imagine, it’s all thanks to the deep bass.
JBL makes TV viewing feel more bombastic than his sub-$300 competitors that I recently reviewed, namely the Polk Signa S3 and Vizio V21. The large subwoofer gives his JBL an impressive dynamic range, most useful for blockbuster movies. What this soundbar lacks in sophistication and atmosphere, it makes up for in sheer oomph.
The JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass may not be as good a bargain as the Vizio V21, but it definitely delivers better results. If you don’t go to the movies anymore, have money in your pocket, and are craving the thrill of the theater, this soundbar is the next best thing.
