One of the most overlooked features on any laptop, iPad, smartphone or iPod Touch is Bluetooth music streaming. Sure, everyone likes the idea of wireless music, but in reality, stereo headphones are bulky or messy, and Bluetooth speakers are often ugly and ugly.

-a rechargeable speaker that shatters our assumptions about what Bluetooth can do (and how good it can sound). Priced at $199, this tiny speaker bar uses two 1.25-inch drivers on the front and a passive radiator woofer on the back to deliver surprisingly balanced sound for its size.

There’s also a built-in microphone for speakerphone operation (not to mention Jawbone’s voice dialing and speech-to-text capabilities) and a multi-purpose button that can be programmed for speed. Expect about 8 hours of autonomy from the internal battery.

The attractive design of the Jambox doesn’t hurt either. The speaker is available in four colors, each with a slightly different embossed geometric design on the speaker grill. The thing is extremely modern. Make a speaker like it

Jawbone Jambox Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

The Big Jambox from Jawbone (yes, people with hands-free headsets) builds on the success of the company’s original Jambox portable speaker, keeping the attractive, no-frills design but wrapping it in a bigger box that’s louder and has longer battery life.

Review: Jawbone Big Jambox

The new model will be available this week for $300. That’s pretty high for a portable speaker and $100 more than its smaller sibling. But the sound it makes is much more satisfying, so it’s worth the extra Benjamin.

Jawbone Jambox Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

Like the original Jambox, the Big Jambox is a simple brick with small speakers inside. It pairs wirelessly with any Bluetooth device to play any audio source you want, runs on a rechargeable battery, and has a built-in microphone so it can be used as a speakerphone. Unlike the original Jambox, which measures 6 inches wide, 2.2 inches high, and 1.6 inches deep and weighs 12 ounces, the Big Jambox is a beast. It is 10 inches in diameter, 3.5 inches high, and 3 inches deep and weighs 2.7 pounds.

Probably the greatest joy of the original Jambox is its go-anywhere portability: it’s small enough to slip into a jacket pocket, purse, or fanny pack. With the Big Jambox you lose that. It’s fine in a backpack or purse, but a three-pound brick of plastic, rubber, and perforated steel isn’t so travel-friendly.

Jambox Review: Loud, Portable Bluetooth Speaker

You can turn it down when it’s time to play well, but turn it up and you get an impressively loud and clear speaker system with some serious muscle. In exchange for portability, you get much improved sound. Jawbone lent me a Big Jambox to try out for a week, and I used it in a variety of settings, indoors and outdoors. While the original Jambox is fine for adding a little background noise to a dinner party or providing background music in an office, the Big Jambox commands attention. Sure, you can turn it down when it’s time to play well, but crank it up and you’ll get an impressively loud and clear speaker system with some serious muscle. Highs are crisp and mids are accurate. Although the depths could be flatter, the bass response was still better than I expected, given the size of the speakers: it has a stereo pair of 2.2-inch neodymium drivers.

And a pair of rectangular passive radiators (one in the front, one in the back) to cover the bottom end, all housed in an enclosed cabinet.

It’s even more impressive when you do it outside. I left it on the back deck, and it had enough power to fill the entire back yard with great sound. Even when I cranked it up as high as possible, the distortion was barely noticeable—things around it started rattling from the vibrations before the speakers even started to distort. It employs some compression where necessary to keep distortion at bay, but the audio processing left no noticeable sonic footprints.

Bluetooth pairing is easy. Just press the “Pair” button on the page and select the Big Jambox from the list of devices on your screen. I’ve tested it with three iPhones, an Android tablet, a laptop, and an iMac, and it’s obvious that Jawbone has Bluetooth Pat connectivity. The Big Jambox remembers 8 paired devices at any given time, and its claimed 33-foot range worked as advertised, but it does require line-of-sight if you’re more than 20 feet away.

The lithium-ion battery lasted more than 12 hours in our tests. This is mostly listening at full volume and making phone calls for several hours. You could probably get another hour or two out if you use it at lower volume levels, but either way, it lasts easily enough for a day at the beach or a party that stretches into the wee hours. A small icon in your phone’s status bar shows the speaker’s remaining battery life on iOS devices (native) and on Android (via the Jawbone companion app). It takes about 2.5 hours to fully charge using the included AC adapter. You can also download it with a USB cable, but you’ll need to leave it plugged in overnight to fully power it up.

The Big Jambox comes with Jawbone’s LiveAudio feature installed, basically a software trick that gives the stereo image a big “3-D” feel through artificial spatial extension. It sounds great when you’re sitting, centered, and standing perfectly still about 3-4 feet from the speakers. Put it anywhere else (like across the room) and it sounds like crap. LiveAudio also dramatically changes the dynamics of recorded music. I only turned the feature on while watching movies because it generally made the music worse.

The lithium-ion battery lasted more than 12 hours in our tests. Overall though, Jawbone’s new speaker sounds great and I’m a big fan of the design. But its ability to fill a larger space, rather than simply add ambience, is what makes Big Jambox such a success. I would recommend it, even at the relatively high price of $300. There are similar speakers at $200 or less (Altec Lansing’s $200 inMotion Air IMW725 or Soundfreaq’s $100 Sound Kick) but they lack the power, speaker features, and battery life of the Big Jambox. If you don’t want to compromise in those areas, you have to spend money.

If you think the original Jambox is awesome, but (like me) wish it was louder and offered more clarity, put the Big Jambox on your short list. But be careful: it’s more difficult to sneak it on a picnic, so I’d only recommend it to people who always carry a backpack or who mainly use their Bluetooth speakers at home. If you split your time between a traditional home office and a sunny spot like your back deck or roof deck, this thing is your new best friend.

Jawbone Jambox Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

I’m cool and clear. Tight package. Controls for skipping tracks, changing the volume and answering calls are just above. Over 12 hours of playback time with a rechargeable battery. Solid Bluetooth performance. Less than three kilos. Eight rubber feet keep it from moving.

The 10 Best Bluetooth Speakers Under $100

The TIRED price makes you think too much. Size Matters: It requires an external method of transportation and does not fit into travel transportation. The bass is clear and not flabby, but could use more punch. You need the wall warts to load quickly. The spatial enhancement feature is meh.
