A micro-USB charging cable and waterproof speaker are included with the Jam Hang Up. Users can use a 3.5mm cable for wired listening, but Hang Up doesn’t offer one.
Its plastic body is durable: the Hang Up is shock-resistant and has received IP67 dust and water resistance certification, which means it is waterproof and dustproof. The front speaker grill is covered in fabric, while the sides of the speaker are rubberized hard plastic. One side contains three buttons for playback and volume. The center button, a vertical line, appears to be a separator for the “X” and “O” volume controls, but serves as a multi-function button.
If you get a call while you’re in the shower, don’t hesitate to take it because Hang Up comes with a built-in microphone. That said, don’t expect anything out of the ordinary or even great from the microphone quality, especially if you’re making calls while in the shower. Its seemingly omnidirectional design can’t dampen background noise while isolating the human voice, so any running water can diminish voice clarity.

Listeners can receive calls from the shower, but that doesn’t mean voices will be transmitted clearly with water running in the background.
One side of the speaker features a neat entry design that houses the included microUSB cable, eliminating the frustrating times of searching for a microUSB cable in an increasingly USB-C world. A removable piece of rubber covers the micro-USB and auxiliary inputs, which you’ll want to keep covered when you’re near water.
On the back of the speaker is a flexible silicone flap that can be pulled back to reveal an adhesive pad, which sticks to almost any flat surface without issue. The instructions show that the silicone flap can be used to remove dirt or crumbs that collect on the sticky pad, but I’ve never had that problem.
Battery life is solid: The speaker has eight hours of playtime and needs about two hours to complete a full charge cycle. Note that after two minutes of inactivity, the speaker automatically turns off to save battery, which can be frustrating when repeated.

The volume up and down buttons are flanked by a raised vertical button, which does not feature a speaker accent color. This makes it difficult to see the relative of the other two.
The Jam Hang Up maintains a strong connection within a radius of ~80 feet; it has a Bluetooth range of 100 feet. More than that, though, it starts with the fight; in all fairness, that has two walls separating the speaker from my phone.
Unlike many cheap Bluetooth speakers, this one includes a built-in auxiliary input for wired listening if Bluetooth connectivity is too complicated. Admittedly, for listeners who will be using it as a shower speaker, an auxiliary cable may not be a good connection option when it comes to durability.
The Bose SoundLink Micro is a great companion for small outdoor gatherings, from the grill to the table; it’s also ~$80 more than the Hang Up.

Although it looks similar to the Bose SoundLink Micro, the Hang Up’s sound quality doesn’t compare. That said, it’s 80 percent cheaper, so it’s forgivable. Plus, we’re talking about a dedicated shower speaker, which means it’s there to facilitate your solo shower singing sessions. In general, the frequency response leans towards a mid-centered sound. As soon as the water flows from the shower, every detail is sealed and clarity falls by the wayside.
The bass lacks clarity, which can easily be picked out from the song Smoke Signals by Phoebe Bridgers. At 3:40, the bass picking emphasizes Bridgers’ vocals and doesn’t resonate well. The detail is completely lost, almost impossible to separate from Bridgers’ violin and voice. The Mids prove to further emphasize Bridgers’ lower register, which remains prominent throughout the patient ballad. His voice is always masked as the lead bass pick coincides with the beginning of each chorus as he sings the word “you”.
Jam Hang Up doesn’t have the best audio quality, and running water from your shower might even hinder it.
In Regina Spektor’s song, The Calculation, the beat relies on a repeating cymbal beat that remains constant until the chorus, which begins at 1:07. Here, Spektor loudly breaks into singing the line “Hey this fire it’s burnin’ burnin’ us up,” and the cymbal hits are harder to register above his vocals. As things calm down in the next verse, the cymbal-drum beat pattern is easier to hear. However, the following chorus at 2:06 experiences the same problem of masked treble frequencies and a general lack of clarity.

If you’re going to invest in this shower speaker, keep your expectations realistic because it looks like a $20 speaker. However, when you’re in the shower, the sound of water splashing through your shower will likely mask the frequencies anyway, making audio quality one of the least important aspects of a shower speaker. All in all, this is a great option for listeners looking to save a buck on something that works.
