The $50 Jam Plus version improves on the original Jam and adds ‘Stereo Parties’ if you buy two.

Low-priced ($39.99) and set apart from the rest of the pack are mini Bluetooth speakers with some creative packaging: the speaker is housed in a “jam” jar made of hard clear plastic with a curved top.

The affordable HMDX Jam Plus sounds better than the original Jam, has an attractive, funky design, and if you buy a second speaker you can create a complete wireless pair of true stereo speakers.

No audio capabilities; Bass has improved a bit, vocals still sound thinner and louder.

With an attractive design, affordable price, and the ability to combine a second Jam Plus to create a left/right stereo pair, the Jam Plus is an excellent Bluetooth speaker.

Now the company is back with a new, improved version, the Jam Plus, which retails for around $50 and comes in multiple colors. The speaker is a little bigger than the original and looks a little better, but another selling point is that if you buy two of them, you can combine the two speakers to create a left/right wireless stereo speaker pair. The Jam Plus is one of the first Bluetooth speakers to feature such a stereo option, and it certainly creates a great listening experience, though it doesn’t overshadow the speakers’ shortcomings in the bass department.

Design and Features The original or “classic” jam is sold in six “flavors” — strawberry, grape, blueberry, blackberry, apricot and apple — referring to its various color options. This model avoids the fruit reference, but it comes in five different colors. Interestingly, the Plus is slightly larger than the original but weighs slightly less (8 ounces vs. 9.6 ounces).

The speaker is well-designed in an attractive style and seems to be aimed at blondes and younger tech users with an iPod touch (yes, the iPod touch is aimed at a younger audience). It is easy to take and carry from room to room, and although there is no carrying case for transport, you can use a plastic bottle as a case.

Like all Bluetooth speakers, the HMDX Jam connects wirelessly up to 30 feet away and works with all Bluetooth-enabled smartphones, tablets and laptops/desktops. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated to provide up to 4 hours of wireless play, which is good, but not great (your battery life will vary based on volume level, so you can use it at lower voltages). It charges via USB and has an audio input for playing audio from non-Bluetooth devices.

There are no speaker capabilities, but as mentioned, you can link two speakers together to create a stereo pair. If you take a quick look at the instructions, it’s easy enough to put the two speakers together (you just set the bottom switch to left for one speaker and right for the other).

HMDX sells the Jam Extreme Surface ($59.99), which is “drop-proof, spill-proof and dirt-proof.” However, that model does not offer a stereo pairing feature.

Performance The Jam Plus sounds better than the original with a bit more bass. Although users appreciated the original jam, I thought it looked too thin. Conversely, this model just looks thinner, which is an improvement.

With all these mini bluetooth speakers, I try to review them in their larger context. If listening to the speaker, it won’t be too impressed (perhaps a more accurate description would be disorientation), but mainstream users should be completely satisfied with the sound.

The Jam Plus plays bigger than its size, and its sound can be improved slightly by placing it near a wall to get some reflection. It can interfere with bass-heavy material, especially at high volumes, so it’s best not to turn up the volume and listen at a soft volume level.

As I’ve noted in many of my reviews of small wireless speakers (and some larger units), they don’t provide stereo separation. The good news here is that pairing these two speakers solves that problem. And by creating a wider soundstage, your music will sound fuller. The only problem is that the speakers don’t deliver a ton of bass, so the sound is a bit thin. To be clear, while the Jawbone Jambox and JBL Flip (and JBL Charge) offer significantly more bass, all of these small speakers sound thin. The Philips SoundShooter is a smaller speaker that sells for the same price (around $50). It offers twice the battery life, more bass, and phone capabilities. But the Jam Plus looks like a solid speaker.

Conclusion Jam Plus has some great pluses working in its favor. I like its design, the speakers sound better than the original and you have the option to buy a second speaker and create a stereo pair. Oh, and at around $50, it’s pretty cheap.

There are many options to choose from, including the more expensive Philips SoundShooter and the JBL Flip.

, which gives better performance. However, the HMDX Jam Plus is one of those products that has some flaws (so battery life, lack of bass, no speaker function), but the sum of its parts makes it recommendable, especially for kids and teenagers.

So what makes JAM Plus different? In addition to their more vibrant color options, the Plus versions are .5-inches tall and 3-inches wide. They can also be combined in a stereo pair. Other than that, they are effectively identical speakers that share a similar design and Bluetooth connectivity. It’s great that the Grace Digital Mini Bullets II speaker system only uses a wireless connection. Bummer.

Each speaker is packaged in a plastic container that probably looks more like candy than a piece of consumer electronics. It’s fun and represents the product and its $60 cost. You might want to read our HMDX Jam review for a $10 cheap speaker.

Each of the above Bluetooth speakers have buttons on the bottom to pause/play and increase the speaker’s volume. Below is a rubberized button to turn it on and a switch to select mono, left or right channel. To create a stereo pair you need to hold down the power button on each speaker – make sure one is set to L and the other to R – for 5 seconds. If the stereo pairing is complete, you will hear a steel drum sound. In my testing, pairing took about 20-30 seconds — you’ll hear a quick series of tones between each speaker indicating the HMDX Pluses are talking to each other.

Pairing a phone or tablet with the HMDX Plus is as easy as turning on the speaker or speakers and selecting a profile from your device’s Bluetooth menu. If you plan to use only one speaker, make sure the HMDX Plus is set to mono, otherwise, the Bluetooth pairing process will not work. That said, the HMDX Plus speaker pairs very quickly, and surprisingly one of the fastest and easiest I’ve tried. Not to say that pairing a Bluetooth speaker is difficult, but even techies were able to pair their phone with this speaker in seconds; There is no Bluetooth button to hold a button or combination of buttons.

Hmdx Jam Plus Bluetooth Wireless Speaker

From a build standpoint, I’d say the HMDX Plus is nothing short of rugged. Keep in mind that they’re only $60, so the almost-plastic finish is fitting if not overpriced. With that in mind, I’d choose two of these over the UE Mobile Boombox, as the stereo pair easily surpasses that speaker’s sonic capabilities and still costs $20 more (note: you can get the HMDX Plus for $50 on Amazon , meaning the pair is about the same price
