Harman Kardon’s Onyx Studio 6 is a portable, waterproof Bluetooth speaker that looks more like a design than something that can get wet in the rain and still work. Pricing for the Onyx Studio 6 is unclear—the list price of $479.95 is offset by a $200-$300 regular retail price, including from Harman Kardon itself. In this affordable price range, the speaker is a solid value. Anyone looking for a precise mix should be clearly oriented, but mega-bass enthusiasts looking for rumble from a portable, outdoor-friendly design will be pleased.
The Onyx Studio 6 is an upright, circular speaker with a cut-out, rubberized handle that looks like a designer handbag from certain angles. Available in black, blue, or gray, the 11.2 x 11.5 x 5.0-inch (HWD), 6.5-pound speaker weighs quite a bit, so a handle is a must.

Behind the fabric background are almost rubberized black buttons, including Bluetooth, power, volume plus/minus, and a play control that skips a song when pressed twice (but doesn’t return either way when pressed three times). ).

Below these controls is a small status LED that shines through the grille, and a set of powerful drivers, including one 4.7-inch woofer and one 1-inch tweeter combined with 50 watts and a frequency response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz. The speaker is compatible with Bluetooth 4.2 and only supports SBC codecs. Two Onyx Studio 6 speakers can be connected wirelessly to create a stereo pair

The closed port on the back protects the connected power supply connections and the additional 3.5 mm input (there is no cable for this input). There is also a micro USB service port.
The IPX7 rating means that the speaker can technically be immersed in up to a meter of water, but the Bluetooth signal does not work well underwater. The point is, it has to be comfortable by the pool or in the rain. Just make sure the connection port cover is closed.
Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 Review: Beautiful Reversal
Harman/Kardon claims the battery lasts up to eight hours, but results vary depending on volume.
What’s missing? The speaker has such deep bass that an app with EQ would be really useful. Some users may appreciate the speaker function – the Onyx Studio 6 does not have a microphone.
On tracks with strong sub-bass content, such as the Knife’s “Silent Shout”, the Onyx Studio 6 delivers a clear, deep bass that vibrates most surfaces it’s placed on. At higher volumes, the bass is undistorted, although it thins out, but DSP (digital signal processing) is activated to prevent distortion.

For songs like this that don’t have great sub-bass but still have some serious low-end punch, like almost every song on Fiona Apple’s new record,
— Onyx Studio 6 continues to produce thunder and then some. Fortunately, it doesn’t overwhelm the mix, but playing this record at high volume creates an almost live PA feel with the kick drum’s intense bass.
Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with much deeper bass in the mix, gives a better idea of the Onyx Studio 6’s overall sound. Here the drums sound like salamanders or Godzilla-sized timpani. Low-frequency jitter has been fixed, but anyone looking for a precise mix will be disappointed as there’s no way to call back from the app. Fortunately, the highs are still represented, so we have a somewhat balanced, groovy mix with strong bass and sculpted highs.
Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 5 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Deals,
On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the drum loop gets enough high-mid presence to pack a punch, but it also packs some serious extra low-end punch. Beat-carrying sub-bass synth hits are delivered with slightly less intensity, so we know the limits of this speaker’s low end. It can reproduce The Knife’s sub-bass to some extent, but it thins out at high volumes, and it’s hard to reach all the way for deep bass synth hits. But don’t worry, bass lovers: the rest of the lows are so strong you won’t notice what’s missing. Here, the kick drum loop collects low-level hits at wide intervals, rather than accurately repeating this mix. The vocals on this track somehow don’t get any extra thunder – they sound crisp and clear, and there’s not a lot of extra twang.
, there may be issues with this speaker, but the bass doesn’t sound that crazy in classical and jazz mixes. High-register brass, strings and vocals still stand out, but while things are relatively balanced, it’s far from an accurate signature.
From a pure sound perspective, the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 delivers the punch that bass lovers are looking for. But in the portable, outdoor category, it has some decent competition. The $400 JBL Boombox 2 has power and stereo drivers, and we’re also fans of the $250 Sony SRS-XB43 and $150 Sony SRS-XB33 . All of these speakers are waterproof, and some even have LED lights. But the Onyx Studio 6’s main selling point: gonzo bass response is hard to match. If you pursue it, you will be happy.
