This month I thought I’d take a look at a product category that is currently unknown because many people use laptops or handheld devices. I’m talking about 2.1 computer speakers. There is no doubt that the market for computer speaker setups with subwoofers has shrunk significantly with the proliferation of laptops, tablets and smartphones. However, gamers still love to use desktops and we in the Apple camp still love iMacs and Mac Minis.

In fact, there is something about desktop computers that imposes the necessary discipline that makes you sit at your desk and focus more on a piece of work. However, that doesn’t mean using a desktop can’t be fun. Sometimes it’s better to sit in front of the desktop and watch a movie, play a game or two, or even enjoy listening to your favorite album through a good speaker while writing, especially if you’re working alone.
The first computer speakers I ever bought myself were a pair of Harman Kardon Soundsticks, back in 2001, a year after they were launched at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in July 2000. Harman Kardon worked closely with Apple when they launched the Soundsticks. , and the first edition of Soundsticks connected to a Mac via USB. The design was amazing at the time. The dome-shaped transparent subwoofer, with its light pulsating blue LED, attracts the attention of Apple fans, while the translucent speakers with four silver drivers and a donut-shaped stand look futuristic. And it’s safe to say that Soundsticks still looks like a great piece of industrial design, almost two decades later.
Today’s Soundsticks don’t look very different from the early Soundsticks. The blue LED has been replaced by white light, while the speaker looks very similar except that the donut-shaped speaker stands in black instead of silver, and the new version now has the much-needed volume control incorporated on the right side. sound stick, with capacity touch control. Another change from those early Soundsticks is that there is no longer a USB connection to take sound from the computer to the speakers. The third version of the Harman Kardon Soundsticks now uses a plain old analog connection that ends in a 3.5mm stereo jack that plugs directly into your computer’s sound card. Setting up the Soundsticks is as simple as that. Plug the two audio sticks into the beautiful transparent subwoofer and connect the power adapter. Then it’s just a matter of plugging the 3.5mm jack into the computer and power up. My first attempt ended with no sound coming out of the speakers. It took me a while to understand that the touch volume control on the Soundstick on the right side can be separated from the computer volume control and the sound can be jacked up on the iMac or PC, yet nothing comes out of the speaker. I soon found that I had to set the volume up on the Soundsticks and then I was in business.

The subwoofer in the Soundsticks is a meaty affair with a rotary knob to adjust how much bass you want to produce. The ideal place for a subwoofer is probably under the table, but this makes it very difficult if you want to adjust the bass settings. I recommend doing it before the last place under the table that you can forget about. Of course, there is always the option of placing the subwoofer on the table because it is always enough to get a piece of table real estate and make a really good talking point… you need a big table.
One thing I like about the Harman Kardon Soundsticks is how they can amplify sounds and warning signs that your computer might make that you’d normally miss if they were playing through the tiny speakers built into most desktops. The way the Soundsticks play music is also pretty cool. They may not be as good as expensive hi-fi sets, but for the money, it’s hard to beat these speakers for listening to music in front of the computer. Interestingly, Harman Kardon Soundsticks are now cheaper than when they were launched almost 20 years ago. They are now priced where they are an absolute steal and a no-brainer for anyone with an iMac, Mac Mini, or desktop PC setup that needs some amplification.

Verdict: Harman Kardon’s excellent Soundsticks have hardly aged. They don’t look dated and are as stylish today as they were the day they launched. Get a pair.
