Yes, it’s smart, but the Google Home Mini or Nest Mini can also act as a basic Bluetooth speaker.
One of Google Nest’s most used features is also one of its simplest. Yes, smart devices with Google Assistant are great for many things, like doing math problems, reporting the weather, and making fun games. But you can also use your Google Nest as a bona fide Bluetooth speaker to stream music, a podcast or an audiobook from your phone or tablet.
Why is this important? Well, you might be listening to a streaming service that Google Home doesn’t support, like Apple Music or Audible. (Full disclosure: I have both.) Or when friends come over and someone wants to DJ the party. Sometimes I prefer to control what plays through my speakers with my phone rather than my voice.
Whatever your reason, here’s how to connect your phone, tablet, or even laptop or desktop to your Nest smart speaker using Bluetooth.

If you’ve never connected your phone, tablet or computer to a Nest speaker using Bluetooth before, the first time is a bit more complicated. Once paired, they will remember each other and checking in and out will be much easier. Here’s how to pair with Bluetooth for the first time:
2. Google Assistant will respond: “To connect, open Bluetooth settings and find a device named [the name you gave the device].”
3. Open the Settings app on your mobile device or computer, go to Bluetooth settings, find the Nest device name, and click or tap the device name or the word or button to “Connect”.
4. The Nest speaker will play a sound to indicate that the devices are now connected. Now any sound you play on your phone, tablet or computer will play through the smart speaker.

Once you’ve paired your device with Google Home, connecting and disconnecting can only be done with voice commands. Josh Miller/
From there, it’s pretty easy. When you want to sign in, start with “Ok, Google” or “Hey, Google,” then say one of the following:
Google Assistant will reply, “Looking for paired devices,” then play a sound when you’re connected. When you’re done, say, “Ok Google, turn off Bluetooth.”
Be careful – if the Google Assistant asks if you want to “clean” your Bluetooth devices, say “no” and try the command again, otherwise it will unbind everything. Chris Monroe/
Google Nest Audio Review
When I tested this process on several different Google Nest devices, both speakers and displays, I sometimes tried to turn off the phone and Google asked: “You want to clear the list of paired Bluetooth devices, right?”
When you “clear” the list of paired devices, Google Assistant will forget the device you just paired (and any other devices you’ve ever paired). Not only will you need to go back and repeat the initial pairing steps as described above, but you’ll likely need to go into the Bluetooth settings on your mobile device or computer and “forget” the Nest device from there. Otherwise, you might get the same error message I did, that your device suddenly can’t connect to the Nest speaker.
