For $100, you’d be hard-pressed to find another portable Bluetooth speaker that delivers as much bass as the G-Boom — and has a built-in handle.

G-Project’s G-Boom is pretty easy to sum up: While it might not be the most attractive portable Bluetooth wireless speaker on the market, it’s one of the best values out there, with big sound and big bang for $99.99. Boss is born.

The G-Project G-Boom is a solidly built wireless Bluetooth speaker with a built-in rechargeable battery (and handle) that delivers decent sound with powerful bass at an affordable price. It has an integrated USB port on the back for charging smartphones.

For $100 you’d be hard-pressed to find another portable Bluetooth speaker that delivers as much bass as the G-Boom.

At first glance, the speaker reminded me of an IED (Improvised Explosive Device), with three LED lights on the front when triggered. However, thanks to the integrated carrying handle, most people will probably think it’s some sort of modern riff on a lunch box. Either way, the G-Boom, which has four rear drivers (two tweeters, two woofers) and dual bass ports, has some weight, weighing in at 5.7 pounds, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. .

Battery Mod A Portable Bluetooth Speaker

It seems to be very well built, with a rubber bottom — G-Project calls it a “protective elastomer base” — that helps keep the speaker from rolling around on slippery surfaces. On the top of the unit, there’s a full set of playback buttons, including a button that lets you toggle through a series of equalization presets. (Although you tend to control playback from your smartphone or tablet, many people prefer to keep control on the unit while keeping their devices separate, so that’s a plus).

You can stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled device up to 30 feet away. On the back you’ll find a line input for connecting non-Bluetooth audio devices (a 3.5mm cable is included for this purpose). Battery life is rated at 6 hours, which is fine but not great, and you charge the unit with an AC adapter rather than a USB cable (the speaker doesn’t charge via micro USB like some smaller speakers).

There’s no built-in speakerphone (no integrated microphone), but a nice extra is a USB port on the back that you can use to charge your smartphone.

The big story here is how much sound you get for the money. Typically, $100 Bluetooth speakers are small (for example, the JBL Flip and UE Mini Boom) and thin on the bass. For $100, you’d be hard-pressed to find another Bluetooth speaker that delivers as much bass as the G-Boom, goes deeper and plays louder than the Ontz XL.

One area where the speaker falls short is clarity. You won’t get much crisper, more dynamic sound from high-end speakers of this size (I’m thinking something like the Sony SRS-BTX500). Also, you may experience some distortion at higher volumes with some tracks. But for $100, it should exceed most people’s expectations.

Conclusion The G-Boom is geared towards a younger audience or those who want a decent wireless speaker at an affordable price. From a design standpoint, it has its pros and cons — some people will dig it and some will think it’s downright ugly.

I’m torn between these two ideas, but the more you plan on moving this speaker around a lot rather than keeping it stationary, the more attractive the design will be, especially if you plan to bring it outside often.

I can’t tell you how well it will hold up to baking in the sun all summer, but it seems to be very well made and plays loud with good bass support. Is. I don’t often make that statement about portable Bluetooth speakers, especially ones that cost $100.

As a die-hard Flight of the Concords fan (saw them in concert last week — woohoo!) I can’t hear the word “boom” without thinking. If you’re an HBO subscriber and you’ve never seen the show, do it yourself.

Well, where was I? As I mentioned earlier, Bluetooth speakers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are designed to sit on a shelf, while others can clip onto your bag or even suck in your shower. However, what you rarely see is a speaker built for bass – especially a portable speaker.

If you’re all about that boss (sorry, had to), look no further than today’s deal: For a limited time and while supplies last, Citizen Goods, a division of StackSocial, has G-Project G -Boom is a portable Bluetooth speaker. $71.99 shipped. This is after applying coupon code CHEAPBOOM at checkout. Updated:

This code isn’t working, but it will: SUMMER10. In fact, this will bring your price down to $69.99!

As you can see, this is not your typical portable. It’s a big lunchbox-looking thing with a heavy-duty carrying handle, the kind that makes me think of job sites and, um, lunches. The design certainly won’t appeal to everyone, but I like it.

I also like the large, clearly marked control buttons on top of the unit. It’s a minor thing, but many speakers either split with the controls or are small, making it hard to see. Here, it’s easy to find and access volumes, games, pairings and more.

Not planning to connect a Bluetooth source? No problem: there’s a line-in jack to connect other devices. You’ll also find a USB port on the back and you can use it to charge your phone from the G-Boom’s battery.

Speaking of which, battery life isn’t great, especially for such a large speaker. It’s rated for 6 hours of playback (less if you’re actually charging an external device).

Listening: The Summer Podcast Edit

I haven’t had any time with the G-Boom, so allow me to refer you back to David Carnoy’s review. Conclusion: He liked the bass-packed sound and easy portability, but not the battery life. I agree: I think it should be at least 8 hours, if not 10.

I can also refer you to this iLounge review, which leans positively on the bang-for-the-buck proposition — and that was based on the original $100 price tag. Finally, nearly 500 Amazon users collectively rated it 4.4 out of 5 stars.

Needless to say, people love these speakers. I think for $72 out the door, it’s definitely worth it.

Bonus Deal: Game Time! As some readers pointed out yesterday, Steam has just started its annual summer sale. There are plenty of new, high-profile titles on sale, but I’d encourage you to take a look at some of the big names. For example, you can snag Cap Talking and No Explode for $9.89. It’s fun and funny and one of those rare games that actually requires a group. It’s available for Windows, Mac and even Oculus and Vive!

The battery was placed in the lower right part of the speaker. I deleted it because it was bloated.

You will see that it is 7.4 V 1800 mAh.
