Bluetooth Gear For Rocking Out Outdoors
Grace Digital must have taken the phrase “Go big or go home” because the EcoBoulder Waterproof Bluetooth speaker from ECOXGEAR is their speaker line, well—B.I.G. This is a great and serious matter. The EcoBoulder comes with a retractable handle and wheels. From a distance it could easily be mistaken for a small travel suitcase. It also doubles as an AM/FM radio, P.A. reason and most importantly, affordability. In fact, the EcoBoulder is one of the most wallet-friendly Bluetooth speakers available. With everything going for it, how does it sound on a large portable Bluetooth speaker?
Let’s get this out of the way first — I’ve reviewed two older (but not this great) bluetooth speakers, and they both sound nicer and sharper than the EcoBoulder. But both the Monster Blaster and the Braven BRV-XXL cost a lot more than this monster (pun intended). And what you get for your money at EcoBolder is very impressive.
The black EcoBoulder shell is hard plastic all around. I expected the metal grills to provide better protection, but those are also plastic. The two carrying handles are easier to handle, but the less the EcoBoulder has to carry, the better. It’s easier to get around. The top of the speaker is a non-slip rubber mat for holding the system’s smartphone and the back hole to the tablet, however, less than for the larger iPad Pro. Even with all that plastic, the EcoBulder looks and feels just right for outdoor use and dirt.
Let’s move on to some features: EcoBoulder is 100% waterproof and dust proof. It’s IP67 rated—so you can drop it into a pool or lake without worry. And although it weighs 27 pounds, it floats. It sports a 100-watt amplifier driving a 3″ tweeter, 8″ full and 8″ passive array of speakers. 10 hours of built-in rechargeable battery life and you can charge your smartphone and/or tablet via two USB ports (charging devices with shorter battery life). time is about 7-8 hours.
Ecoxgear Ecoboulder Bluetooth Speaker Review
The EcoBoulder 4.1 Bluetooth maximum distance is rated at 100 ft. This is much more reliable than I got with the more expensive Forte XXL. Here’s one thing to note: I’ve noticed that if I run Bluetooth from my iMac, it seems very weak if it’s sent directly to the headphone port. However, the Bluetooth from my iPhone 7 Plus is much stronger and clearer than using the power port with the Apple headphone adapter. I can only guess that the new iPhone is more Bluetooth compatible with the EcoBoulder than my older iMac is. If you plan to use the EcoBoulder for outdoor parties, Bluetooth should work great. Note that the built-in waterproof camera is complete with an additional AUX input and USB output that can hold and keep any smartphone connected. Not only is the speaker waterproof, but now it can also be a phone.
The other side of the EcoBoulder has two separate underwater areas for the main power port and the AUX / USB / Mic port. Note that all sealed doors must be closed to keep the seal separate.
AM/FM radio is optional. Although the sound quality isn’t anywhere near wired or Bluetooth radios, it’s readily available for any entertainment, talk radio or other programming without a battery drainer. There are also six digital buttons for easy station changes.
Those radio presets — along with the rest of the EcoBoulder’s top buttons — are back up. It is good that it is a hand in the dark, with many buttons on it
