The wireless speakers market is vibrant right now with new models coming out all the time. Definitive Technology, the US audio brand, has thrown its hat into the wireless-speaker ring by adopting DTS Play-Fi technology to power a range of wireless speakers.

Definite Technology’s wireless speaker range includes the W7, a tiny cube that’s even smaller than the excellent Naim Muso Qb I reviewed recently. It’s about the same size as Mass Fidelity’s core system, which I also reviewed a while back.
Inside this small cube, which resembles two McDonald’s Big Mac cans stacked on top of each other, is a collection of speaker units that can produce large volumes of sound. The W7 uses what it calls a tri-polar speaker configuration. The W7 has four separate one-inch aluminum dome tweeters. The two units move forward creating a wider soundstage on each side. There’s a four-inch front-firing mid-bass woofer to add some volume to the sound, while two side-mounted, four-inch, passive bass radiators provide low end for a sound that’s bigger than you’d imagine. . The audio unit is so small. If you don’t want to use your phone or tablet to control things there’s a small strip of control buttons on a mini shelf on the front of the unit.
Specified technology The W7 uses DTS Play-Fi technology to receive its signals. This open architecture streaming technology can support up to 16 mono speakers or 8 stereo pairs. Well, at least that’s the theory. How well DTS Play-Fi works in practice depends somewhat on the quality and condition of your wireless router. Since all music streaming has to go through your router instead of a mesh network, you may experience data bottlenecks. I haven’t been able to try streaming eight stereo speaker pairs, but I think there might be practical issues with multiple routers dealing with a lot of data. Also, the usual caveats regarding distance of the W7 from thick walls and wireless routers apply.
W7 is really easy to get up and running. You simply turn on the unit and use your iOS or Android device to log into the W7’s WiFi signal. Then, using the free DTS Play-Fi app, you can select your router’s WiFi signal and once you’ve entered the router’s password you can stream everything the DTS Play-Fi app has to offer. can do This includes music stored on your device, any NAS servers on your network,

If you want to stream music from another source on an iOS device, you’re out of luck because, unlike AirPlay, you can’t choose DTS Play-Fi to stream from any old app. be It can achieve a certain technology round by adding a Bluetooth receiver to the device. Personally, I’d like them to add BBC Radio iPlayer to their roster of supported streaming platforms to make access to catch-up radio easier.
As far as the W7’s sound is concerned, it’s rich in the volume department and crystal clear in the upper register. I think it lacks a bit of bass and a bit of boxiness, but that’s just a limitation of the W7’s physical size. It seems a bit bright but this can be an advantage if you are playing music in a room full of people with soft furniture. The W7 always has tight control over the rhythm of the music and I loved the way it handled tracks from Sade’s classic Diamond Life album. It was very controlled.

In addition to being able to stream music from your Android or iOS device, the W7 has inputs for 3.5mm analog so you can feed from almost any source. There’s also an optical TOSLink that you can use to connect to a CD player. A USB port is also available and you can use it to charge or power your phone/tablet while it’s playing music. Alas, the USB port can’t be used to connect a hard drive or memory stick, which seems like a missed opportunity. An Ethernet port is another useful addition if you’re at home, and can help overcome potential wireless data blocking issues or long distances from your router’s signal.

A big advantage of using DTS Play-Fi is that you can stream different audio streams to different rooms around your home or play the same music on all speakers. Providing different music in different rooms works well and managing all your home entertainment from your phone or tablet can be a lot of fun.
There are many great wireless speakers on the market and DTS Play-Fi is making a big push to establish itself as the de facto multi-room streaming standard. The quality of the Defined Technology W7 is very good, although the claim of being able to stream to eight stereo speakers may be more difficult to achieve if you’re using the kind of router that many cable and broadband providers have for their internet. as part of The Offering W7 does a great job of playing music with great detail and attack.
